| If word that President Obama would ask Congress for $50 billion in Sandy recovery funding was a trial balloon, the White House should take note of how quickly it crashed and burned. Almost as soon as the large-sounding figure floated into view, the administration said officials were still doing calculations, Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand said they knew nothing about it and Gov. Cuomo added that he had gotten no official word. Well, it came from somewhere. While Schumer and Cuomo deferentially shrank from knocking it as premature, Gillibrand said an appropriation at that level would be “inadequate.” Right she was.

This "rebuilding" is crazy. If you live by the ocean, sometimes it´s gonna come up and visit.
Not enough money on the planet to pay for poor planning.

I live in 102 year old house in an area that is occasionally visited by tornadoes. I figure either we´re due, or it was built in the exact right spot. Either way, I have insurance. Am I doing it right?

Southern and midwestern areas who get smacked with disasters have to pull themselves up by the bootstraps. No such lick for NY and NJ who have to sit on their asses endlessly waiting on an Uncle Sam check.
If i remember correctly,the Nashville flooded area got a whopping $14 million from fema.

Living in a flood plain or next to a sometimes angry ocean suggests that a homeowner assume the risk for damage or purchase insurance to share the risk.
Should those who elect to live elsewhere be taxed to pay for the loss of those who built/purchased homes in areas that are at higher risk for damage from natural disasters?
Is it the government´s role to protect us from all risk or is it the duty of the individual to manage the risk of daily living?

We live in Nashville and had a devastating flood a few years back. Not one mention of a government bailout was broached. We all pitched in and took care of it locally. Why do these "victims of Sandy" expect everybody else to bail them out of a natural disaster? Is this truly what our country is coming to?

Amid catcalls from a Leftist heckler too blitheringly stupid to understand her dream was coming true, President Obama yesterday declared his intention to end the War on Terror — not quite 12 years since the 9/11 attacks. In what may have been the most important speech of his presidency, Obama said he would ask Congress to join him in efforts to “refine, and ultimately repeal,” the Authorization to Use Military Force passed three days after 9/11. Longoria, 38, took home a real degree (not an honorary one) in Chicano studies from Cal State Northridge, where she physically attended classes for three years, according to TMZ. "Big day today!!! The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
