| Politics: The U.S., once king of corn exports, is more like a corn peasant these days, given its precipitous loss of market share to other countries´ growers. Look no further than Congress´ ethanol mandate for the reason why. In another sign of U.S. decline in the Obama era, the U.S.´ share of corn exports has shriveled in the global marketplace. Our biggest buyer, Japan, has cut its imports of U.S. corn from 2.702 million metric tons last year to 1.968 million metric tons this year. Similar figures are seen with our other top customers in Taiwan and China.

FTA: "Fact is, corn is being redirected to the manufacture of ethanol rather than being sold for food, based on Congress´ 2007 Renewable Fuel Standard law, which requires ever-increasing amounts of the nation´s corn crop to go to manufacture the supposedly eco-friendly automotive fuel."
Why blame Obama? The ethanol mandate is courtesy of GWB, signed the law in 2007. The 2007 Renewable Fuel Standard came about in response to his State of the Union address goal of reducing our gasoline consumption by 20% from 2007 to 2017.
I know I´m driving less in this wonderful economy, good patriot that I am. Have to save to pay for food, skyrocketing utilities, health insurance, etc.

We can buy ethanol cheaper from Brazil if we eliminate the tariff. Ethanol can also be produced less expensively from sugar which also would be cheaper from Brazil if the tariffs were removed. Producing a gallon of ethanol requires 10 gallons of water. Our country wouldn´t be going broke if we could stop doing such stupid things.

Whereas I might feel some empathy for Japan and other countries that need our corn, what difference does it make to the farmer to whom he sells his corn? The price is the same for the farmer. And ADM shouldn´t care either. They will sell to the ethanol plants. Either way, I do not see the danger here.
Would someone kindly enlighten me?

The problems are many, besides destroying a food source.
• It takes between 1.1 to 1.3 BTU inputs to get 1.0 BTU outputs of ethanol. That is ethanol is a net loss when it comes to energy conservation.
• Besides not being good for vehicles other than flex-fuel models, fuel economy is reduced 10-20% versus straight gasoline in most any kind of vehicle.
• The ethanol mandate just feeds into the frauds of global warming and the purported "evil" of natural gas and oil---to say nothing of the war on coal.
• Money and effort wasted on ethanol keep us from developing our own ABUNDANT gas and petroleum reserves.

This corn to ethanol mandate is another TECHNICAL decision made by a bunch of LAWYERS who have no technical expertise. That is a recipe for disaster every time.

Commerce: Big Labor worked hard to halt the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement, claiming it threatened our economy and our workers. CARACAS, Venezuela Venezuela´s biggest food company on Monday hit back at President Nicolas Maduro´s claims that it´s to blame for the country´s persistent food shortages. The chief executive of Empresas Polar, Lorenzo Mendoza, rejected accusations by the president that the company has reduced production and is hoarding products to create scarcity. "The accusations that we are producing less than last year are false," Mendoza told reporters. "I presume that President Nicolas Maduro is not well informed about the situation and about what´s happening."

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.
