More than three-quarters of U.S. medical students continue to shun primary care for higher-paying specialties, setting the stage for a shortage of doctors as the population ages and health care expands, a study found. Among medical residents who aren’t planning a career in surgery or pediatrics, 22 percent said they expect to go into internal medicine or primary care with the rest planning on fields like cardiology or dermatology, a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association found. About 20 to 25 percent of students have chosen primary care

All the more reason to go to nurse practitioner school.

Not to worry. Under Obama´s new immigration policies, we´ll soon have plenty of doctors from Bangladesh, Malawi and Cuba

The Feds control exactly how many doctors go through required residency programs mainly via Medicare funding. They control the income of doctors via Medicaid reimbursement rates. The reason there are not enough primary care doctors is because of the Government - end of story.

Don´t worry - Obama with just nationalize doctors through a draft-like law,and the government will order them to be general practitioners. As long as we get free birth control - who cares.

In 10 years - your primary care physician will be made of silcon.

You will put a drop of blood, pee and spit onto a strip that will plug into your IPAD and it will run a full diagnostic panel - and tell you what the problem is.

The article spins a few facts into a diatribe against freedom of choice, as though physicians were public property that should be used wherever someone else decides they should be used. Meanwhile the not-just-useless-but-destructive big bankers loot millions in bonuses and billions/trillions in "government" transfer payments (from the rest of us) while contributing nothing to their fellow man except a ruined economy.

A new GP will be lucky to make $125k a year. Doesn´t begin to pay for $500k in tuition costs for college & medical school, let alone 4 extra years of your life spent in school.

4 years in medical school PLUS the years in residency. For Primary Care/Internal Medicine residency is 3 years minimum, so the very least after college is 7 years before making any money. To branch out from Internal Med to cardiology, endocronolgy, etc. is years more of residency. My son is an Internist and they are not making a fortune. You have to really want to be a Primary Care physician and be dedicated to do it, believe me.

Has anyone reasoned why most of the government doctors in England are muslims?

Third world trained doctors for a third world electorate. Coming here soon.

Good times.

Maybe they figured out that they aren’t reimbursed for the fifteen minutes it takes to explain to patients that the “free physical” Obamacare promised isn’t really free, and isn’t really a physical.

I have asked several Liberals that if we add some 30 million new people to Obamacare and we don´t add any new doctors, who is going to take care of these people? None of them had an intelligent answer.

I then asked, since they will cut medicare payments to doctors and the doctors retire or go to another business what will you do then? The answer to that one is that Doctors can´t afford to waste all that training and won´t quit.

Now one sees why I laugh when they try to tell me Liberals are intelligent.

This will all get fixed when the govt starts setting salaries for medical personel to control costs. they will all make the same amount. If teh drs decided to works less, the govt will mandate that they work in free clinics in order to keep their license. Problem solved.

A gastro doctor told me last week, that his daughter decided that she didn´t want to come into his business, but rather became a vet. He also said that in the future it will be physician assistants that will be doing the primary care for most of us.

My local hospitals & specialists just dropped UHC.UHC is partnered w/ ObamaCare so you can see whats coming.... they´ve lowered reimbursements & require tremendous documentation.

I haven´t seen my doc for 18 months. You see nurse practitioners & the doc becomes a paper pusher.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Taliban gunmen launched a coordinated attack on an international aid group’s guesthouse in an upscale Kabul neighborhood Friday, setting off a furious firefight that lasted several hours and renewing fears of the insurgents’ ability to strike virtually at will in the heart of the capital. The late-afternoon attack took place in Kabul’s Shar-e-Naw district, home to numerous heavily fortified compounds housing international aid groups and Afghan governmental and security entities. The assault began with a powerful car bomb detonated at the gates of the guesthouse used by workers for the International Organization for Migration

A Bronx teacher fired after a student complained about her use of a racial slur says the whole thing is just a ridiculous case of meaning lost -- literally -- in translation. Petrona Smith, 65, was a non-tenured teacher at the bilingual school PS 211 until March 2012, when she was fired after a student complained of being called "negro" and "a failure." But Smith, who is black and a native of the West Indies, said the student misunderstood her meaning: she was using the word "negro," the word for the color black in Spanish

The murder of a soldier in south London on Wednesday has prompted fears of a backlash against British Muslims after the English Defence League staged an impromptu rally in the capital and two mosques were attacked. The BNP leader, Nick Griffin, has also reacted to the killing with provocative tweets calling for a protest in Woolwich and claiming the crime is the result of "mass immigration". Farooq Murad of the Muslim Council of Britain said the EDL´s rally in London on Wednesday night was cause for concern. "When attacks like these happen there´s always the danger of far-right extremism

The truck made it off the bridge and the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Two other vehicles went into the water Thursday evening as the structure crumbled. WASHINGTON — When President Barack Obama pushed his health care overhaul plan through Congress, he counted labor unions among his strongest supporters. But some unions leaders have grown frustrated and angry about what they say are unexpected consequences of the new law — problems that they say could jeopardize the health benefits offered to millions of their members. The issue could create a political headache next year for Democrats facing re-election if disgruntled union members believe the Obama administration and Congress aren´t working to fix the problem.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

MARK LEVIN: So why didn´t Chairman Issa hold an investigative hearing a year ago? Why didn´t Chairman Camp, all Republicans, hold an investigative hearing a year ago, and all the other tripping over themselves right now? I´ll tell you why. Because the establishment Republicans, the RINO Republicans, despise the Tea Party. They despise the conservative movement. We exist to be managed, to be shuttled to the polling place, to vote for their candidates. The Karl Roves of the world, and all the rest of them. They fight us in the primaries, they fight us at the grassroots.

On Wednesday, Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a man who had served Queen and country honorably in the hell of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, emerged from his barracks on Wellington Street, named after the Duke thereof, in southeast London. Minutes later, he was hacked to death in broad daylight and in full view of onlookers by two men with machetes who crowed "Allahu Akbar!" as they dumped his carcass in the middle of the street like so much roadkill. As grotesque as this act of savagery was, the aftermath was even more unsettling

Fox News chief Roger Ailes has sent a memo to his subordinates at the leading cable news network. He sent this memo to his staff today in connection with the federal investigation into an alleged leak to Fox News reporter James Rosen, a story that the Washington Post’s Ann E. Marimow broke earlier this week. The memo’s a masterpiece, too. For all those who wonder what it is about Ailes that endears his people to him — and that makes him such a good interviewee for any media reporter lucky enough to get an audience
