| President Obama’s proposal to Republicans to avoid going over the so-called fiscal cliff — huge tax increases, huge spending increases, and no serious entitlement reform — is risible. What the president is offering up is essentially his last budget, which didn’t win a single vote of support from any member of Congress. It may be that this proposal was simply an extreme negotiating position that will be dramatically reshaped over the next 27 days. Or it may be that the president is, for political reasons, happy to have us go over the cliff.

There are several reasons that Obummer would like to go over the cliff: raising taxes is the biggest. Why in the world wouldn´t he want to just let the Bush cuts expire? He would be adding millions back to the tax rolls despite his coverup speeches about wanting to preserve the cuts for the middle class. He gets more money and the dopey voters in this country will blame the Repubs - win/win. Main goal at this point is to destroy the Repub party so everything he does is focused to that end.

If we go off the cliff, 95 billion will again be collected as payroll tax in 2013. 179 billion more will come from the middle tax as income tax. 84 billion will come from the lower class filers. 27 billion will come from remnants of Stimulus. Only 42 billion from the Rich. He will happily defer for a year some of these taxes if he can get the GOP to create new taxes that will never end. He also wants the GOP to be willing to throw groups of voters to the wolves. If we go off the cliff and Dems propose reverting to Bush rates for all but the rich, the Dems will be the ones sacrificing rich. But they can´t get support for only a one year extension. Plus the GOP can suggest, take the money, find matching cuts in spending, and pay down the debt.

I´d say it is more like Misery. Anyone heard an updated Misery Index lately? If a different man sat in Our House, I´m sure it would be published every hour of the day from here until another Demonrat sat in the Oval Office.

A few weeks ago, President Obama advised graduates at Ohio State University that they need not listen to voices warning about tyranny around the corner, because we have self-government in America. He argued that self-government is in and of itself an adequate safeguard against tyranny, because voters can be counted upon to elect democrats (lowercase “d”) not tyrants. His argument defies logic and 20th-century history. It reveals an ignorance of the tyranny of the majority, which believes it can write any law, regulate any behavior, alter any procedure and tax any event so long as it can get away with it.

In a recent column, Michael Gerson wrote about modern conservatism’s “two distinct architectural styles.” One approach within conservatism, he said, celebrates those who seek to apply abstract principles in their purest form. The alternative approach is more disposed toward compromise, incremental progress and taking into account shifting circumstances. What’s worth noting, I think, is that many of those in the first camp consider themselves to be more principled and authentically conservative than those in the second, who are often derided as RINOs and “squishes,” as part of the much-derided “establishment” and who go along to get along.

If there were an organized opposition to comprehensive immigration reform -- and there really isn´t, compared to the political/business/activist/lobbying complex in favor of it -- the opposition would pound daily on the key weakness at the heart of the Senate Gang of Eight bill. That weakness is simple. The bill proposes to legalize 11 million currently illegal immigrants before imposing greater border security and workplace enforcement. In that, the gang´s priorities are different from the American people´s. An opposition would remind the public of that, often. Many polls have shown that voters favor eventual legalization and a pathway to citizenship

American tourists dining on a glacier in eastern Iceland found themselves floating away from shore on an iceberg earlier this week, an Icelandic newspaper reported. Four people were rescued from Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon. They had set up a table and chairs with plans for dinner when a gust of wind pushed the ice from the land. They were stranded about 30 feet from shore. One of the diners managed to jump to shore before the ice drifted too far and call for help. Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election.
