Following the riotous town hall meeting in Staten Island the other night....FEMA presented some with a list of apartments that were for rent. That was the extent of the ´help´ from FEMA.

For those who think the victims of Sandy are exaggerating or whining, they are not. For those who live in Sandy hit areas, I wonder how many of them thought the people on the Gulf Coast exaggerated or whined about FEMA and red tape after Katrina, Ike, or any hurricane that has hit the people of the Gulf Coast in recent years. Guess what, they were telling the truth. "We´re from the government and we´re here to help". (And if you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I want to sell you. Oh, wait, did it suffer Sandy damage? First you have to call FEMA and several other government agencies to see if it can be fixed or elevated above the flood zone...and you´ll need permits.)

Allow me to explain things to you people.
FEMA is overwhelmed with fraudulent claims and slackards who love the good life.
One of my former graduate students works for FEMA, and the last time I talked with her, there were Katrina ´victims´ still living in hotels around the U.S., with maid service, cable tv, and three good meals a day. And we, the taxpayers, are covering that. Katrina happened 7 years ago, didn´t it?
In addition, FEMA gave out one thousand dollar visa gift cards to ´victims.´ And how did some of the victims spend the money?
First, some of them lived in New Orleans, and remained there after Katrina. But charges to those gift cards included casinos at various locations around the U.S., breast augmentation surgery, tattoos, and other such expenditures.
So FEMA has to put up with regulations that exist to stop some of the fraud, and that slows them down. That doesn´t mean that they are perfect - they make mistakes, and those who are actual victims of a natural disaster are really impatient.
But the fraudsters are still there, now in NY or NJ instead of New Orleans...
Finally, let´s focus on the little governor of NY, Andrew Cuomo, who has been totally ineffective, except for formulating bigger and bigger demands on the feds - now up to 34 bILLION dollars! And the homunculus mayor of NYC, Bloomberg, who may be as pathetic as mayor nagin of New orleans.

#4 is right. I think the real delays in reconstruction are going to be caused by local building and zoning authorities.

Why is it that all ALL!! the fallout from Katrina was blamed squarely on Bush, and not ONE thing he did to alleviate the damage was given him credit? Yet here is a carbon copy, and barely a paragraph is conneted back to Barack - and he is happily packing for a Fab vaca on the beach. How does media get away with such blatant double standards? Why do we let them?

I would bet a lot of the beach area homes will be razed for a green belt area. I don´t think gov wants anyone living in/on the beach. Everyone should be in multi-family housing along side fast/light rail.

FEMA has been ´transformed´ into a tax sucking useless organization, especially when it comes to the middle class that the president keeps lying about that he wants to help. Help, my arse. Also NY is a totally run demonrat state. All they care about is getting free US taxpayer money; the rest they´ll suck out of the rest of NY state taxpayers.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) appeared on CNN’s The Situation Room on Tuesday evening where he was asked to respond to former Vice President Dick Cheney who told Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace that the junior Kentucky senator was wrong when he criticized the NSA’s surveillance programs. Paul tore into the Bush administration’s role in the establishment of the post-9/11 security regime, noting that he thinks it is possible to catch terrorists using methods consistent with the Constitution. Cheney told the Fox News Sunday host that Paul was incorrect in his criticisms of the NSA’s communications monitoring programs.

Domestic spying capabilities used by the National Security Agency to collect massive amounts of data on American citizens could soon be available to the Department of Homeland Security — a bureaucracy with the power to arrest citizens that is not subject to limitations imposed on the NSA. Unlike the DHS, the NSA is an intelligence agency, not a domestic law enforcement agency. It cannot arrest those suspected of wrongdoing. That power of the federal government lies with agencies under the jurisdiction of the Justice Department, the Treasury, Homeland Security and other law enforcement agencies.

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
