| David Cameron last night faced mounting pressure to promise a referendum on the EU after Ukip’s best ever by-election result. Leader of Ukip Nigel Farage said his party was now the main challenger to Labour in the North of England after it surged to second place in two key votes. There has been a sixth night of rioting in Sweden´s capital, Stockholm, despite police reinforcements being deployed. Cars were set alight in poor suburbs inhabited largely by immigrants, although the unrest was reportedly not as serious as on previous nights. The rioting also spread outside the capital for the first time on Friday, with youths torching vehicles and buildings in two towns. [Snip] It is believed they were sparked by the death of an elderly man nearly a week before, who was shot by police after he allegedly threatened to kill them with a machete.

The leader of the Lebanese Shia militant Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah, has promised his supporters victory in Syria, where his fighters are backing President Bashar al-Assad. Mr Nasrallah said Hezbollah would stay in the conflict till the end. Syrian rebels in the besieged town of Qusair say they are under heavy bombardment from Hezbollah combatants. The town is close to the Lebanese border, a conduit for both the government and rebels to get weapons. [Snip] He said his movement could never be aligned with Syrian rebels who, in his view, were supported by the United States and Israel.

One of the men suspected of murdering a soldier in Woolwich, south-east London, was detained by police two months ago, Sky News has been told. The Metropolitan Police has defended the way it responded to reports of the killing in Woolwich, south London, after questions were raised about how long it took officers to reach the scene. The force said police were there within nine minutes of the first emergency call and firearms officers were at the scene five minutes after that. Mayor Boris Johnson was heckled when he visited the area. HANAHAN--The U.S. Naval Brig is once again being mentioned as a leading alternative to put terror detainees on trial after President Barack Obama this week rekindled his push to shut down the terror-suspect holding site at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. “I once again call on Congress to lift the restrictions on detainee transfers from Gitmo,” he said. “I have asked the Department of Defense to designate a site in the United States where we can hold military commissions.” Speculation immediately re-focused on the brig at Charleston as a leading choice where some of the 166 detainees could go on trial.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago.
