| The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties. AAA, which issued its warning today, says just 12 million of more than 240 million cars, trucks and SUVs now in use have manufacturers´ approval for E15. Flex-fuel vehicles, 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles, 2013 Fords and 2001 and later model Porsches are the exceptions, according to AAA, the nation´s largest motorist group, with 53.5 million members. Comments:
It matters not whether ethanol destroys your engine, yields a net loss in energy, costs more, produces more smog, wastes food and water, creates unnecessary fertilizer runoff in our waterways.
What matters is that legislation (signed by GWB, no less) mandates increased ethanol consumption, and the EPA (which the GOP refuses to defund) insists we use it, no matter the cost.

Mathmatics not my strongest suit, I can still cipher with the best of the chalkboard folks.
It takes 11 units of energy to produce one unit of ethanol from corn, and that produces 10 units of energy.
Maybe we should grow more corn, but I don´t think that is the problem.
Why can´t Congress do the math?

#1 touches on a very important point. Lawyers--with no technical expertise at all--are making technical decisions, then walking away from adverse consequences. Government does not belong in these matters AT ALL!

I drive a prius. It computes and displays gas mileage every five minutes. It also displays the performance of every tankful of gas if you reset the display when you fill up. I average between 55 and 57 mpg driving on summer fuel. When the switch to winter furl is made the change is immediately noticeable. The average drops to 47-48 mpg. The cost to the public is billions of dollars.

I have a similar problem with my 2011 Ford Escape. Just shy of 30 mpg in the summer. With winter blends it drops to 26.

Since ethanol increases the octane, more timing is needed for the ethanol via the ECU, and there is no feasible way to do this for the masses. Only newer vehicles might be capable of tweaking parameters. I am able to take advantage of the ethanol via custom ECU tunes on my Mustang GT for performance purposes, but to the masses it just causes problems. Oddly enough the top e85 is more desirable than race fuel since it´s octane is basically through the roof (for cheaper) and nets some serious gains on a high compression engine.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?"
