Senate votes to prohibit Guantanamo
detainee transfers to US

The Hill (DC), by Ramsey Cox

Original Article

The Senate late Thursday night approved a Republican amendment that would prohibit the transfer of terrorist detainees from Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo) to U.S. prisons. Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) introduced amendment 3245, which would prevent the Department of Defense from using funds to move suspected terrorists from Gitmo facilities to prisons within the United States. Ayotte said Thursday that she feared that those presumed terrorists would seek legal rights in U.S. courts. She added that the Gitmo facility is far more secure since it’s protected by the military.

Comments:
Sit down, Senator Feinstein.

Sen. McCain was on Greta´s show a couple of nights ago and he said a terrorist who had killed 5 Americans (in Afghanistan?) had been released within the last two weeks. Read all about it in your local news. Oh, wait ....

Yeah supposedly this would save taxpayers $110 million a year like the left has found religion on spending all of a sudden. It would cost many times that to retrofit prisons on the mainland to house these creeps.

Despite Obama obsessive outreach to muslims they are still held in low regard by m
ost people, especially ones who have attacked this or that.

If you´re going to close Gitmo to terrorists reopen it to house kinpin drug dealers. That is anyone who has sold more than an ounce of pot/s.
The left claims letting pot offenders loose out of fed prisons would save money but less than 2% of federal inmates are there for pot offenses.

I am shocked that something good happened in the Senate. Lets see if Obama follows through on his veto threat.

Reply 6 - Posted by: GreatGreyhounds, 11/30/2012 7:04:34 AM     (No. 9040714)

It only forbids the DoD from using funds for the transfer!

Doesn´t say anything about the DoD remanding custody to the DOJ, or Federal Marshals for transfer to the United States...

They should have sent these detainees to Feinstein´s neighborhood

Reply 9 - Posted by: Chuzzles, 11/30/2012 9:36:20 AM     (No. 9040982)

If I remember correctly, the DOJ has already purchased a prison in IL for these special inmates. Of course Obama will retire to Hawaii in 2016 so he won´t have to have these terrorists in his neighborhood. This is one time I feel sorry for the state of Lincoln.

Reply 10 - Posted by: nonsense, 11/30/2012 9:36:25 AM     (No. 9040983)

Isn´t that why the administration bought that prison in Ill.? Job security for his former home state.

If they are brought to U.S. soil there will never be a trial. They´ll just grow beards.

There is a big legal difference between the suspected terrorists being held at Guantanamo Bay and the convicted terrorists being incarcerated in a number of US Federal Prisons. The suspected terrorists at Guantanamo have not been convicted of crimes, where the terrorists in US Prisons have all been convicted of felony crimes.

That difference means a lot when one goes into a US courtroom and applies for political asylum in the USA claiming that one might be killed if returned to his or her home country. Where a convicted terrorist would probably have little chance of ever being granted political asylum, a foreigner simply suspected of being a terrorist could well end up being released into American society by a judge in accordance with provisions written into the really very liberal immigration laws relating to asylum and withholding of deportation.

In the long-run it would better if they stayed at Guantanamo Bay, with most of them eventually being returned to their home countries, or better yet being detained in a new facility built someplace in Antarctica.

Last Thursday, Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) started a Twitter prairie fire with his call for people to describe #ObamacareInThreeWords. (My contribution was “Sorry, Doctor retired.”) (Snip) The White House, never shy to jump into social media, responded with a flurry of tweets, including “It’s. The. Law.” which smacked, more than anything, of typical Obama chest-thumping. Is the administration sure they want to aggressively take credit for a law which, for almost the entire three years since its passage, has had more Americans supporting its repeal than supporting the law itself and which, according to Rasmussen Reports

Tooth and Nail: Fluoride
Fight Cracks Portland´s Left

PORTLAND, Ore.—In the 1950s, after health authorities began fluoridating U.S. water supplies, they faced opposition from groups like the John Birch Society, which called it "an unconstitutional mass medication of the public." Sixty years later, the fight over fluoridation has erupted in Portland, where the battle has drawn in the city´s craft-beer brewers, organic-food purveyors and environmentalists. Even some of the city´s famed indie-rock musicians are taking sides. The debate has prompted something of an existential crisis in this self-consciously liberal city, which votes Tuesday on whether to overturn the city council´s 2012 decision to fluoridate.

I first saw the headline early Tuesday on Real Clear Politics, a political news site where I generally start my morning. It´s not where I expect to see a story on breast cancer. Then I checked my e-mail messages -- they all seemed to be about Angelina Jolie´s op-ed. Students in my undergraduate class wanted to discuss it in our next session. Colleagues expressed concern and wondered what the right response was. People I don´t even know sent e-mails. One, from a research fellow at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, nicely summed up the general concern:

Three Signs There’s a Cover-Up

The late columnist William Safire once said that a good clue that someone in Washington was engaged in “an artful dodge,” i.e., a cover-up, was that they used the phrase “mistakes were made.” Safire defined it as a “passive-evasive way of acknowledging error while distancing the speaker from responsibility for it.” The phrase became infamous when both Richard Nixon and Ron Ziegler, his press secretary, deployed it to explain away Watergate without explaining who did what and when or whether any ill motive was involved. Astonishingly, the Internal Revenue Service resurrected the Nixonian expression within hours

Just when you think the news surrounding Obamagate cannot get any worse, it does. Some say U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s days on the job are numbered and that it’s just a matter of when he’ll be forced to resign. While I’ll not shed a tear over Holder’s departure, one of the replacement names being floated has me reaching for tissues: Gov. Deval Patrick. Patrick has denied he’s interested — but the job isn’t on offer yet. If it is, President Obama should not select him nor should he be confirmed by the Senate for a plethora of reasons.

Don’t let anyone fool you: Everyone in politics is tempted to believe that their noble ends could justify unethical and illegal means. Those who had hoped that President Obama would usher in a new era of higher standards in Washington must be shell-shocked by last week’s revelations: -The Internal Revenue Service admitted to delaying conservative organizations’ tax-exempt status while quickly approving groups that had liberal or progressive orientations. The IRS asked these groups all sorts of invasive questions, including what kind of books they read, and leaked some information to the media. -The Department of Justice secretly obtained

The Arab collapse

The Arab Spring has unleashed the Arab Collapse. Everybody still standing in the region is picking the flesh of the helpless. The Islamist cancer proved more virulent than Arabs themselves expected, while dying regimes behave with unrestrained ruthlessness. And our diplomats still think everyone can be cajoled into harmony. We’re witnessing a titanic event, the crack-up of a long-tottering civilization. Arab societies grew so corrupt and stagnant that violent upheaval became inevitable. That’s what we’re seeing in Syria and Iraq — two names, one struggle — and will find elsewhere tomorrow.

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. He said it isn´t difficult to figure out who´s doing what at the agency.

It began in earnest last Friday. A flash mob of latte drinking, tofu eating media that has done its best to quell, rather than fan the flames of truth, turned on one of their own. Jay Carney lay bludgeoned at the base of the podium, a victim of friendly fire. Ironically, the attack was reminiscent of the one in Benghazi he has repeatedly denied the Administration he represents bears any responsibility for. “Changed twelve times?!” came the cries. And with good reason. We were misled; no, lied to.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

Washington – Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-MO, issued a video statement Friday in response to reports that the Internal Revenue Service unfairly targeted conservative nonprofit groups. (Snip) “There’s a reason Lady Justice wears a blindfold in America. That is because in America, we don’t apply the law based on who you are, who you know, or what you believe.
