Brain-Lock inside the Beltway

It’s at times like this I’m ashamed to admit I live inside the Beltway. Well, that’s probably not specific enough, since I’m usually ashamed to admit I live inside the Beltway. Still, the second you try to explain the stupidity of this “fiscal cliff” fiasco to a normal person, it makes William F. Buckley’s famous declaration that he’d rather be governed by the first few hundred people listed in the Boston phone book than by the faculty of Harvard seem all the more reasonable. While there are some responsible politicians and policymakers in Washington,

Short term plan - the few tea party republicans who are in - fight tooth and nail.

Long term - new party. Gotta do it. This is ridiculous.

The short term high is revenge against the GOP and getting elected again. The pain down the road will be felt by other people, some still in kindergarten, so they do not care.

This hasn´t been about what´s good for the country for a very long time.

Third party talk is unserious. There are already alternate parties all over the place. Those who yearn for something other than Dem or Repub surely can match up with one of those. For the rest of us, we will need to work from within and, no, there is no magical fairy dust that will instantly transform us.

When you are forced to live by the policies that are enacted by corrupt politicians in DC, this is what you get. The realization has set in that neither party wants to fix what they have destroyed.

The progs will fight tooth and nail by any means necessary to achieve their goals while the Republicans stand by and wring their hands. Here´s a novel idea, how about putting your political careers on the line for once in your miserable lives, grow a spine and do what is right for this country.

No, the party is over!!!

THERE IS NO SOLUTION TO A PONZI SScheme, other than to have it collapse sooner rather than later.

The country is bankrupt, with no possibility of ever paying its debt!

Hopefully, the bankruptcy will force the liquidation of government assets, and we will be on the road to prosperity with all of those national forests, and oil and coal reserves, back in the hands of the people.

The third leg of this argument is that the rich didn´t get rich being stupid. If the Feds raise the rates, the wealth will flee the country and the good old middle class will be left footing the bill - just like we always have. And Obama does have a plan. Raise taxes and redistribute the money. That has been the plan from day one.

Could it be that it has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt to the republicans that the democrats are hell bent on destroying America?

If that has happened, Obama is going to see "trouble" on a scale that he never anticipated. Pass the popcorn.

For now -- I -- work locally and give no allegiance to obama and his thugs.

I´m moving from Illinois as fast as I can. The governor just gave driving priviledges to illegals. OMG -- my poor city.....he´s working on 2014´s voting demographics already. Never let a crisis go to waste -- our mayor says....

#4, it´s quite clear the Republican Party is going to continue to accept both debt limit increases, spending increases, and tax increases. So anyone who wants something different is " unserious"? Get serious.

Whatever it is that infects the Republican Party does not seem to be curable. It´s in a death spiral and those of us who are indeed serious want a real party with a real commitment to solve the mess that´s been forced upon us.

I am waiting for someone perhaps a fellow L-dotter who possesses a legal mindset to draft a simple Constitutional Amendment. Keypoints are as follows:

1) As it was not the intentions of the founders that Congress should become a career, all congressional defined benefit pension plans are hereby revoked.

2) As it was not the intention that Members of Congress should be exempt from the laws that they enact, any act of congress will be enforcible on all citizens including Members of Congress and all Federal
Employees. (If it is a crime to lie to a Federal Agent, it should also be illegal for a Federal Agent to lie to you)

3) Any law previously passed wherein Congress exempted themselves from enforcement or obligations is hereby declared Null and Void. All such laws shall be expunged fro the United States Code.

#12, no one is stopping you from starting yet another party. I think #4´s point was that there are already many to choose from. None of them are a perfect fit? Then, you have a lot of work ahead of you. Remember Ross Perot? With all that money and all those fans, he still couldn´t get on all 50 ballots as an Independent Party candidate.

Quicker and easier to work from inside your party of choice. Begin at your local level and work toward the top. It can be done. It must be done.

During the GOP primary, I was asked to point out a instance when Mitt Romney lied. I quoted a Romney campaign ad In which Mitt said that he balanced the Massachusetts budget "without raising taxes" and that later on he "cut taxes." As a factual matter, only one of these could be true. Governor Romney did not raise tax rates, but he did increase taxes by eliminating "loopholes" (i.e. making someone pay more taxes). Later, Mitt did not lower tax rates, but he did offer offer more exemptions (i.e. opening more loopholes). So one of Mitt´s statements had to be false. Jonah agrees: "If I make the same amount of money as I did last year but pay more in taxes, then my taxes have gone up. If I pay less, my taxes have gone down. Whether the numbers moved this way or that because of closed loopholes or rejiggered tax rates, the result for me is the same."

I point all this out because, on a thread yesterday, the OP requested an example of Mitt Romney lying during the primary. QED.

I think the reference from a yesterday thread was to demonstrate an instance of Romney "lying and smearing" another candidate. There are attempts to tie Governor Romney to such stuff, but they mostly rely on assumption.

It seems like many people don´t think that anything wrong could happen to the country, it will always be anything you want it to be. They are sadly delusional, we will not always be a free people, we will not be fiscally sound and dreams will always be dreams because due to the state the country is in you cannot fulfill your dreams no matter how many flowery speeches are given by politicians. What is happening to the country is sad and not what the founding fathers envisioned.

Pat Buchanan´s observation that he would rather be governed by the first few hundred people in the Boston phone book than the Harvard faculty has to change as both groups are equally nuts. That´s how we got to this nightmare. What part of economic decline didn´t the American voters get and what part did they think would get better with ObamaII?

Best I can tell, not a single dim´o´rat is concerned about the debt or the deficit or the effect of high taxes.

Whe they speak of regulation and investment, they are never concerned that it be good regulation or good investment.

Did 911 result in an awakening of the dangers some groups present to us? Not for long. The dims viewed it as a political issue to demgog about. 911 is a distant memory, barely remembered by these people- assuming they do not think the US got what it deserved.

They don´t see a debt problem. They look around and everything is fine just like it was yesterday.

I don´t see how you run a complex organization along populist lines with this populace.

Third Party? No chance. As others say, they already exist yet make no progress. The reasons are understood but there seems to be no remedy.

All politicians lie. Or their opponents will be able to convince you of that regarding some matter or another. Often the allegation is less fact than interpretation.

I advise looking at the arc of a candidates life rather than a specific instance or allegation. (Of course sometimes a single instance will reveal so much that it must disqualify the candidate.)

Perspective. Realize that the last few years have been wonderful for Washington D.C. There is more spending, more power, more employees, and raises and benefits.

It is not an accident that the DC metropolitan area is the richest in America. And the gap continues to grow.

Realize. Washington is not helping you.It could care less about that. It is helping itself and sees no reason at all to change anything.

Obama stated " he is keeping a list " -
and remember- He wants REVENGE -
The Republicans would do well to present
a plan, and then - do NOTHING -
a Take it or Leave it plan to the President-
he will NEVER negotiate or compromise-
He wants it HIS WAY, or NO WAY
Let him be President over a bankrupt U>S>
Then maybe U>S> citizens will vote a
rational person into the office and the Country can try to heal its wounds- and
once again prosper

Watergate 2.0 -- why the

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

‘What would you be focusing on in the Benghazi investigation?” I spent many years in the investigation biz, so it’s only natural that I’ve been asked that question a lot lately. I had the good fortune to be trained in Rudy Giuliani’s U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan. Rudy famously made his mark by making law enforcement reflect what common sense knew: Enterprises take their cues from the top. Criminal enterprises are no different: The capos do not carry out the policy of the button-men — it’s the other way around. So if I were investigating Benghazi,

East Germany’s Ministry for State Security, also known as the Stasi, posed a major challenge during my three-year stint as an attache at the U.S. Embassy in Bonn during the 1960s. Detecting and preventing Stasi agents from penetrating the security of U.S. diplomatic facilities in West Germany was a 24-7 undertaking. The East German secret police were even more ruthless and relentless in operations against their own citizens. Political suppression in that communist state was total. There was no room for dissent. Thousands of East Germans were arbitrarily imprisoned for “internal security” reasons.

In eight months since an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi left four Americans dead, a Republican-led investigation has focused on potential missteps by the White House — and come away with nothing significant. There has been little attention given, however, to covert actions by the Central Intelligence Agency that were partially uncovered during the September 11, 2012 attack. That may be changing. CNN´s Jake Tapper argued this week that we should give more scrutiny to the CIA´s presence in the Libyan port city. Congressman Frank Wolf (R-Va.) said the same, according to CNN:

As Margalit Fox says at the outset of The Riddle of the Labyrinth, the story of Linear B is well known. This 3,000-year-old language was discovered on clay tablets excavated in 1900 on the island of Crete. It thereafter puzzled scholars for half a century before it was decoded by Michael Ventris, an English architect with no formal training in archeology or linguistics. Linear B’s history is an absorbing tale, full of mysteries both intellectual and historical, and it’s been told and retold since Ventris made his breakthrough. The problem, as Fox sees it,

So allow us to do the work for him: There is no comparison. Nixon, in a series of crimes that collectively came to be known as Watergate, directed from the White House and Justice Department a concerted campaign against those he perceived as political enemies, in the process subverting the FBI, the IRS, other government agencies and the electoral process to his nefarious purposes. Mr. Obama has done nothing of the kind.
