| Classical explanations of conventional wars run something like this: An aggressor state seeks political advantage through military force. It has a hunch that the threatened target will likely either make concessions to avoid losing a war, or, if war breaks out, the resulting political gains will be worth the military costs to achieve victory. Wars then are prevented only by a balance of power and military deterrence: aggressors have to be warned that it would be stupid to start a war they will likely lose. Uh, no. Proportional means equal in effect. This doesn´t work, as the more patient, less worried about losses, faction merely ups the ante next time, knowing that it will only get back the same in kind.
What nonsense. The response has to be swift, immediate and overwhelming. If not, the ratcheting up will never end. War by attrition is neither humane nor right.

For every rocket fired into Israel, fire a smart bomb back. The Israelis probably are entitled to another 200 smart bombs. After the first 100, the people will stop allowing the few militants left from firing from schools and hospitals.

Hm, proportional response, eh? I like the sound of that. Israel responds in kind to each attack, launching, as their opponents do, their best munitions at random civilian population centers with no warning.
What do you mean "That´s not the ´proportional´ they want"?

Actually Gaza has one of the most densely populated areas of the world. If Israel got 60,000 Gaza style rockets and fired them back they would be pretty effectual.

Yesterday I was talking with some friends, and said, "There should be no reduced sentencing or probation for the first offense, come down hard and harsh to get their attention. The first and only time my then young teenage son broke curfew, he was five minutes late. I grounded him for five weeks...one a minute. After that, even if he thought he might not make it home on time he called ahead with a begging/excuse so he wouldn´t be punished again."
And yes, I was one of those mothers who drug the five year old back to the store to apologize to the clerk for taking a piece of candy without paying.

A faulty steering apparatus may bring an early end to NASA’s Kepler space telescope, a $600 million tool in the space agency’s quest for life elsewhere in the universe. Kepler is the first NASA mission capable of finding Earth-size planets in or near the habitable zone, the range of distance from a star where the surface temperature of an orbiting planet might be suitable for liquid water. The Internal Revenue Service last year supplied a left-leaning nonprofit charity with confidential information about conservative organizations, which the charity disseminated to the public, ProPublica reported yesterday. The charity in question was ProPublica itself. We should acknowledge that "left-leaning" is our characterization; ProPublica describes itself in its own tax filings as "entirely non-partisan and non-ideological." ProPublica is legally obliged to be nonpartisan, for it enjoys tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, which means that contributions to it are tax-deductible.

If it is proven that the IRS thwarted some groups from obtaining tax-exempt status in fear that their traditional or conservative messages might hurt the 2012 Obama campaign (especially if it did so under pressure from White House-affiliated operatives), and if it is proven that the Obama administration deliberately ignored warnings about lax security at the Benghazi consulate, missed real opportunities to send help, or deliberately massaged intelligence reports in order to mislead the pre-election public about the true nature of Benghazi in order to further a false campaign narrative of a near dormant al-Qaeda

The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men. Issa didn´t issue a subpoena to former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who co-authored the Benghazi report with Pickering.
