I knew Rotherham and its people well, several of them my uncles and aunts and my maternal grandparents too. This is truly a major breakthrough from a city population that still remembers miners v Thatcher in the not too distant past.

Dare we hope this is a harbinger? I am not up on UK politics but admire Farage. Is Ukip analogous to the Tea Party in many ways?

There are libertarian elements of Ukip (see other article posted) but their biggest concern is Europe, specifically the EU vis-a-vis the UK´s national sovereignty.
Idiotic rules flowing from Brussels make great fodder for outraged editorials but the reality remains: governments attempting to implement socialism without having the courage to admit same have outsourced the implementation to faceless bureaucrats on the continent. And, of course, all the bureaucrats are Marxist to the core.
It is grimly ironic that a group/party dedicated to national identity and sovereignty are a) a curiosity and b) a small minority.

A photograph posted to the Shanghai-based website ChinaSMACK shows a model from the waist down wearing the on-trend stockings. A caption below touts them as the perfect ´summertime anti-pervert´ device and ´essential for young girls going out’. It does not state where shoppers can find the garment and internet searches prove fruitless. The image of the tights has triggered hundreds of responses from amused and horrified viewers. ‘Damn, so disgusting!’ commented one.

Nato has handed over security for the whole of Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban were ousted in 2001. At a ceremony in Kabul, President Hamid Karzai said that from Wednesday "our own security and military forces will lead all the security activities". Observers say the best soldiers in the Afghan army are up to the task but there are lingering doubts about some. Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
