The parents of a college freshman who was found dead on campus say they found out about her death on Facebook. Jasmine Benjamin, a 17-year-old nursing student at Valdosta State University from Lawrenceville, Ga., was found dead in a study area in her dorm on Nov. 18. According to CBS Atlanta, police are treating the death as a homicide, pending the results of an autopsy. Jasmine's parents say the school did not inform them of her death, learning about it instead through a friend's Facebook post. "For someone to be so insensitive not to reach out to the family,

Please, your check cleared. The Government school does not care about you or your daughter, only increasing the pay of the professors and teaching the destruction of America.

My condolences to the family.

12 hours on a studyroom couch? It appears the study room is not used that much.

Condolences to these poor parents. It´s the worst thing that can happen to a family.

I always had a bit of worry on my mind while the kids were in college. I trusted my kids to use their heads but there are so many other people around to intervene.

I learned my SIL was in the emergency room on Facebook when my daughter posted it.

Luckily he was okay, but I read her the riot act about using FB instead of a telephone. Do what you want to do AFTER the people who care about you are notified.

My heart really hurts for these parents, but they have apparently had no experience observing college kids. They sleep anywhere and everywhere, but for all anyone who saw her there may have thought, she could have gotten up at some point, then come and laid back down. The reality is that social media is instant communication, whereas the school and sheriff´s department had to take certain steps before notifying them. She was found at noon, and they were notified that afternoon. That is simply not unreasonable. Still, I am so sorry for them.

How awful for them. But, yes, I can´t blame the college for not being able to reach them as quickly as FB or Twitter.

Prayers for them and I hope they find the answers as to why/how their daughter died.

Re #3, two parts to that 12 hour information.

She was found on the study room couch where she appeared to be sleeping.

She was believed to have been dead for 12 hours.

But...her death is believed to be a homicide because it appeared that she had been moved to the couch from somewhere else at some time after her death.

So...

The notification is something else. But there is no support for her being on that couch for 12 hours.

The way this story is written, the family seems more concerned about how they found out than about the death itself.

New cable network Al Jazeera America introduced itself to viewers on Tuesday with reports on political strife in Egypt and the impact of climate change on U.S. cities, shortly after a major pay TV distributor declined to carry the channel. The decision by AT&T's U-verse pay-TV service stemmed from a contract dispute over terms to carry the new network, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said. Al Jazeera responded by suing AT&T for breach of contract in Delaware Chancery Court. Globally, Al Jazeera is seen in more than 260 million homes in 130 countries. But the new U.S. channel funded by the emir of

Johnny Manziel will return to a football field this evening when he and his Texas A&M teammates hold their first practice hours after an ESPN report that could threaten the Heisman Trophy winner’s eligibility. In the latest and by far most serious report concerning the off-the-field activities of Johnny Football, the NCAA is investigating whether Manziel received money for autographing hundreds of photos, footballs, helmets and other memorabilia in January. ESPN’s “Outside the Lines,” citing two sources, reports that Manziel received a “five-figure flat fee” from autograph broker

America’s Marxist-loving Democrats are on a roll. The Dem roll, which has effectively frightened almost the entire Republican Party into quivering RINO jello, is spreading its tentacles all the way across the pond to Britain. AP reports that Britain’s governing Conservatives have hired Jim Messina, President Barack Obama’s former campaign manager, to advise them ahead of the 2015 general election.

Rochester, N.Y. -- She says she had no warning that someone was going to search her car after she left to catch her flight. So the woman contacted News10NBC. We found out it happened to her because she valet parked her car. Those are the only cars that get inspected. So if security feels it is necessary to search some cars in the name of safety, why not search all of them? Laurie Iacuzza walked to her waiting car at the Greater Rochester International Airport after returning from a trip and that's when she found it -- a notice saying her car was inspected after she left for her flight. She said, “I was furious. They never mentioned it to me when I booked the valet or when I picked up the car or when I dropped it off.”

Like him or hate him, there is no disputing that Rush Limbaugh’s very special brand of mixing right-wing politics with his flare for entertainment has produced one of the most successful radio programs in the medium’s long history. Whatever the burning political question of the day, millions of Americans have relished the opportunity to tune into Rush’s program, knowing that he would quickly take that hot potato, throw a few gallons of verbal kerosene into the mix and elevate the matter into a five alarm fire with a just a few well-chosen words spoken in the style only Rush Limbaugh could

Less than a minute into his speech at the Boston marathon bombing memorial on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden went tragically off script and told the crowd of Boston bombing survivors that "it was worth it." After expressing how impressed he was with the tribute, he said somberly, "let me say to those ´quote survivors,´ my God, you have survived and you have soared. It was worth it. I mean this sincerely - just to hear each of you speak. You´re truly, truly inspiring." The audience sat in stunned silence until Biden declared, "I´ve never heard anything so beautiful than

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. And the babies are more likely to help those who share the same ethnicity, which is known as

Western Washington University sent a questionnaire to students asking them for advice on how the administration could succeed at making sure that in future years, “we are not as white as we are today.” The question notes that WWU’s racial make up does not perfectly reflect the nation at large, and asks students to consider strategies that other universities have used to focus on skin color as the paramount indicator of a student-applicant’s worth. The president of WWU has stated that his explicit goal is to reduce the white population on campus, according to Campus Reform. “I’ve said before and I’ll say it
