In an apparent bid to outflank the left on the tax and deficit issue, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute has called for a tax increase on the middle class — yes, something not even the most liberal Democrats have called for. This is all the more startling since AEI is a conservative, free-market think tank. Its list of scholars is a who’s who of right-leaning policy intellectuals. That case for the tax hike is made by AEI resident scholar Sita Nataraj Slavov in the think tank’s online magazine, The American. Like Willie Sutton, Slavov’s thinking
Comments: What´s going on with these "conservatives??" The AEI also supported a carbon tax. This is really detrimental to all of us!
I understand where she is coming from. Millions upon millions of people are apathetic about the massive government overspending problem because they are not paying for it. At one time liberals happily jacked-up tax rates on everyone (remember bracket creep?). But that proved to be politically toxic. Now they are content to spend wildly and only borrow/print money to pay 40% of the bill. Eventually it will destroy us, but that is their goal anyways.
Truth is, many "middle class" people pay little or nothing in federal income tax because of their home mortgage deductions (and income level) so they are free to vote for huge government with impunity.
Maybe it IS time to raise taxes to fit the budgets of the politicians they elect.

Boner should hold for Clinton Era spending and roll back regulations to Clinton Era levels. Then give ground on big tax hikes that will punish those making more than $2M per year per couple or $1M single person ( like 75% flat and eliminate their deductions). This will hurt but it is what all my liberal friends who make this kind of money and voted for Obama and prop 30 in California, deserve.
This would hit the Big Media class which deserve much worst worse.
I have been doubtful of comments by AEI reps on c-span lately. This is more impressive to me in that I really do not watch c-span much since they used Politico (and the NYT) for sources during the campaign.
Look, I´m a conservative. I believe in small government and fiscal responsibility. Unfortunately, we lost the election and will not get a small government. But if we believe in fiscal responsibility, then people need to start paying for the government they want. I say hike taxes on EVERYONE - maybe then they will rethink the necessity of big government.
#8 is right! We either are going to have raise taxes on everyone so, to paraphrase Bill Clinton, we can share the pain OR, we can just let every entitlement go bankrupt and let people feel the pain that way.
Entitlement REFORM is the only real answer, but the Democrats are corrupt to the core and won´t let that happen.
George Bush gave Americans sizeable tax cuts. 40% of working Americans pay no income taxes. So what happened, the majority ended up hating the man. We need to go over the cliff so that the 51% bozos in this country realize that elections have consequences.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon in Johannesburg, South Africa, tens of thousands gathered at FNB Stadium to pay respects to departed civil rights icon and former South African President Nelson Mandela. (Snip) His remembrance of Mandela’s life was followed by a challenge for people to ask themselves “how well have I applied his lessons in my own life?” “It is a question I ask myself – as a man and as a President,” President Obama continued. “We know that like South Africa, the United States had to overcome centuries of racial subjugation. As was true here, it took the sacrifice
Former CBS newsman Dan Rather is in a unique position to tackle the issues surrounding 60 Minutes following its erroneous Benghazi report, and on Piers Morgan‘s show Monday night, Rather explained what he says is the key difference between his report and Lara Logan‘s: his story was true. Rather echoed points made in Mediaite’s defense of Logan: that it’s very easy to blame the correspondent (being the face of the reporter) and forget that there are people working on these reports behind the scenes who are deserving of similar scrutiny, and that any judgment of Logan’s journalistic bona fides should take
The President famously promised that you could keep your health plan and doctor. For many people, both of those pledges are turning out to be false. And now, you might not be able to keep your medicine, either. There are two reasons why. The first has to do with the higher out of pocket costs patients will face. The second issue may be even more significant. Simply put, many drugs may not be covered at all, and the costs patients incur by buying them with cash won’t count against out of pocket caps. This has repercussions for drug makers with big portfolios
he first two months of Obamacare created a rare convergence between supporters and opponents of the law: Everyone agreed that the rollout was a disaster. The consensus reached all the way up to President Obama himself, who went so far as to list the "poor execution on my administration’s part" alongside the GOP´s "reckless shutdown" as reasons that "frustrations with Washington are at an all-time high." It was like an Obamacare miracle. But with HealthCare.gov improving, the convergence is ending. For Obamacare´s supporters, the IT problems really were IT problems. Now that the Web site is working the law will
Kanye West speaking with SaturdayNightOnline.com host Garrett, West Saturday night “Like, I’m just giving of my body on the stage; I’m putting my life at risk, literally!” “When I think about when I’m on the ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing,’ and ‘Coldest Winter’ moment, like that mountain goes really, really high. And if I slipped… You never know. And I think about it. I think about my family and I’m like, wow, this is like being a police officer or something, in war or something.”
Kevin Kolbye, Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Dallas, served as the on-scene commander for the Benghazi investigation but has not yet testified before Congress about what he knows. Republican Congressman Frank Wolf wants to know why. Kolbye addressed the GovSec West Conference in Dallas in late November and discussed various aspects of the Benghazi investigation with attendees. During his presentation, Kolbye noted that, contrary to initial reports, FBI assets were on the scene in Benghazi within a few days after the attack. Breitbart News reported that story when it broke.
On Sunday, a media reporter for the Washington Post said he believed that MSNBC had fired host Martin Bashir because conservatives were relentless and did not quit in hammering Bashir and MSNBC for Bashir´s suggestion that someone should urinate and defecate in the mouth of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Bashir resigned from MSNBC last week, nearly a month after he made his scripted remarks on his MSNBC program. Appearing on CNN´s Reliable Sources with host Brian Stelter, the Post´s Paul Farhi said "the outrage was from the right, the idea that Sarah Palin and, by the way, a woman, obviously was
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
