committee chiefs

The Hill [Washington DC], by Molly K. Hooper

House Republican leaders picked six new committee chairmen on Tuesday, solidifying the team that will carry them forward in the new Congress. Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) office released the slate of chosen chairmen for ratification by the entire House GOP conference, which is expected to happen on Wednesday. Three of the races were competitive, with Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) now set to become the new Homeland Security Committee chairman, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) the Science Committee chairman and Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.) the Foreign Affairs chairman.

I want people with fire in their eyes and bloody axes in their hands.

Every day of sending letters, "expressing concern," hearings -- it´s all wasted. Worse, it abets the Dems efforts at hurting the country.

With the exception of Lamar Smith, I´m not familiar with this newly-elected crew. I too want some fire, and please some new fresh messaging expertise from the leadership. This Speaker´s press opportunities are simply embarrassing. They each take a turn behind the mike reading boilerplate talking points we have all heard a hundred times before. I have seen better presentations in high school speech classes. Let´s go Boehner and company!

Looks to me like good ole boys, seniority based, deck chair shuffling by Boehner.I want to see people like Trey Gowdy getting chairs.

People´s brains haven´t caught up to the new reality on how our government works anymore. The House is becoming more irrelevant by the day except for being the whipping mule for the media.

Obamajust got relected ostensivly because he´s such a supreme leader but he´s put nothing on the fiscal cliff table. Instead the GOP is under pressure to stick their necks out wth a willing media rady to chop them off.

Dingy Harry has laid down the gauntlet on a number of things which go unchallenged. The left never gives an inch on anything while the republicans stand in line to cave on issue after issue.

It´s crazy for the GOP to stick their necks out on SS and Medicare because the left drools over demogouging it.There´s plenty of room in baseline budgeting to cut spending but you have to demonstrate the waste in each dept. to get public support for cuts.

The left has been using the same base tactic for decade after decade. They get elected, run up spending then come back a year later and say they need tax increases to cover the deficit. By then, people forget they´re the ones who created the demand for more taxes.

Well, the GOP House and PLO Senate had better come up with a solution to the final splat over the cliff or Obama will just have to do it through Executive Order. The American people just can´t wait, eeeyo.

Thursday morning on Chris Jansing´s MSNBC show, Politico Senior Reporter Lois Romano referred to Guantanamo Bay as a "really bad political tar baby" for President Obama: JANSING: Lois, let me start with Guantanamo Bay. Everybody knows [Obama] made this campaign pledge the first time he ran. Again to the question ´why now?´ -- was he pushed by the hundred prisoners who are on hunger strikes? ROMANO: I think it just came to another boiling point right now. [Obama] ran on this in 2008, and if you recall, when he came into office, there was a lot of turmoil

There have been a number of new revelations this week in the ever expanding scope of the IRS scandal. However, even with so many developments in the investigation of this egregious scandal, there was extremely limited coverage of the unfolding of this affair in the morning news of many more liberal stations like ABC, NBC, and CBS. In contrast, Fox News devoted almost 15 minutes in their programming on Thursday morning’s Fox & Friends show to enlighten the public of all of the new information in the scandal. The only other station to provide any coverage

In a long-awaited speech at the National Defense University, Barack Obama claimed that the nature of international terror attacks threatening the United States has changed since Sept. 11, 2001, with ´no large-scale attacks´ on America occurring since then. But his definition of ´large-scale attacks,´ his speech made clear, doesn´t include the 2013 Boston Marathon attack that wounded hundreds, the 2012 Benghazi terror attack that injured dozens and killed four, and the 2009 attack at Fort Hood that killed 13 and injured 30. All those attacks had the potential to leave far more American bodies in their wake than they actually did.

Another major political speech, another Code Pink heckling. During President Obama‘s counterterrorism policy speech at National Defense University on Thursday afternoon, Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin interrupted when the topic turned to the closing of the military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. “I’m about to address it, ma’am,” Obama said as Benjamin went off about the hunger strike currently taking hold amongst Gitmo detainees. “Why don’t you sit down? But you’ve got to let me speak.” “You are commander-in-chief! You can close Gitmo today!”

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Thursday announced new restraints on targeted killings and narrowed the scope of the long struggle with terrorists as part of a transition to a day he envisions when the nation will no longer be on the war footing it has been on since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. In a widely anticipated speech at the National Defense University, Mr. Obama offered his most expansive defense of the drone war he has waged since taking office, but he signaled that he planned to wind down the strikes, which have stirred controversy

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus grew a bit testy during his Morning Joe appearance on Thursday as the other guests — John Heilemann in particular — challenged his assertions regarding the IRS scandal. Right from the start, Heilemann objected to Priebus inferring guilt from IRS official Lois Lerner‘s using her Fifth Amendment right. Lerner didn’t do herself any favors by choosing not to answer any questions at yesterday’s congressional hearing, Priebus argued — “which, whether you agree with it as a basis of law or not, implies there are some criminal aspects of this investigation.”

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
