| Breast cancer clusters in California may not be limited to Marin County. New research released Tuesday identified four areas of the state that have rates of the disease 10 to 20 percent higher than the state average. (Snip) Marin County has long been studied for its high rates of breast cancer, but many questions remain unanswered. Risk factors for the disease include having a family history of breast cancer, being white, hormone use after menopause, being an older mother or never having children, alcohol consumption, and having higher socioeconomic status. Not one word mentioned about mammograms, which last week were said to be useless [new 0bamacare Age group-think]. I can probably guess easily why there is a high incidence seeing the map. Awhile back, I was watching some series on PBS about the history of the Bay Area and how it was built up, literally. It doesn´t take a medical degree to figure out that the waters around are toxic. I worked in Silicon Valley where you could smell the large pools. This is a future nightmare for the homeowners.

The Pill is the guilty party in nearly every instance of increased breast cancer- but that does not fit into Feminist Theory.
It is prescribed for menopause, and to regulate menstrual cycles in addition to its original purpose.
Breast cancer has risen how many percent ? since The Pill was invented?
And no correlation?

What I don´t understand is where does the money collected all across this country every week for cancer research go ? We should have been able to find a cause and cure by now.

This is so freaky! I had just finished reading an email from a good friend who just had breast cancer surgery. And she had lived in Marin County until recently when she moved to Santa Barbara!

#7, it goes to paying salaries, benefits, lab space, and other things so they can keep researching.
It´s too big of a business to ever cure cancer. Been hearing this since the mid-70´s.
They will just keep making small gains in treatment and quality-of-life measures.

All those people drawing salaries and doing research to be doing research have developed information and treatment that has minimized the effect on women with breast cancer compared to what was standard not too many years ago.
This is one discussion that no man without appropriate education should get into. No place for driveby opinions. Too many women have died too young, their bodies riddled with metastasized breast cancer, or had to undergo devastating radical mastectomies. Read up on that one, boys.
Now they are trying to figure out how to prevent it. That involves the accumulation of data such as this. The data begins to emerge. The scientists follow the data. I do not begrudge this money. It is not wasted.

Re OP comment, this article is not about that kind of prevention. They are trying to figure out these clusters. Even 10% to 20% higher rates in these areas have stood out and caught their attention.
Mammograms are still the best primary diagnostic tool, and no, they don´t send women into a ton of unnecessary treatment. That is the rubbish the Obama machine wants us to believe. We must not buy into it. A mammogram is used to find tumors when they are small and can easily be treated. Again, this is not men´s territory unless they are well-educated or have had personal experience with breast cancer in a friend or loved one.
But this article is not about diagnosis and mammograms.

OP, the smell you mention is the dump in Alviso and the stagnant water at the end of the bay.
#6 is definitely onto something. Remember, Marin is one of the most leftist areas in the Bay Area. All those free-wheeling progressive women and all. I wonder why they think not having children could make one more susceptable?? I would think that having lots of children would be more of a reason.

Women who never bear children have a higher breast cancer rate.
The concentration of lesbians in the Bay Area would explain the cancer clusters, at least partially.

I agree with #13 and #14. Also, a link between breast cancer and abortion was discovered some time ago in Great Britain, where abortion´s not as politicized and both its pros and cons can be discussed rationally. I would think the abortion rate would be higher in Marin and other parts of the Bay Area, because more women there decide on abortion so child rearing won´t interfere with their careers.

I´m a breast cancer survivor, and I´ve never had an abortion. Never used hormonal b/c. Breastfed three kids. Did everything "right." Sometimes it just happens.
