| Tea and crumpets, it´s a time to celebrate! Your favorite English period drama, Downton Abbey, has been renewed for a fourth season by ITV, the British channel that produces it. You haven´t even seen the third season (or, "series" as they say in merry ol´ England) of the show yet because stodgy PBS refuses to air it in the U.S. until January. Unless you have already seen it because you couldn´t wait any longer and opted for a less than legal viewing experience. Or you happen to be the First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama,

I saw the handwriting on the wall as the "series" took a sharp left turn at the beginning of the 2nd season.
So it is not so curious that The Linebacker finds Downton Abbey of such great interest: it plays right into the Marxist party line as the Crawley family gets theirs.

I found it un-watchable. Total soapy trash. With elocution lessons. I heard that one of the daughters married the IRISH socialist chauffeur? LOL! These writers are in desperate need of a history lesson.

I am a huge fan of British tv. My local library has an extensive selection of great Brit shows. Their shows are certainly far and beyond better than what our networks have been putting out recently.
My only quibble is that sometimes the audio quality isn´t always the greatest, which makes a Brit accent hard to understand. So if there are no subtitles available, the volumn needs to be a bit louder than normal.

I loved every delicious morsel and nuggetnof this production and was begging for more which will come soon with another Christmas episode.
Yes, the series takes a definitive move to port (the left). Hey, it´s the 1920´s. Even with these nuances, which are to be expected with the main character being his eldest daughter, they flow nicely and don´t take anything away from the beautiful production. I look forward to season four.

"Downton Abbey" is written by Julian Fellowes who happens to be Conservative. If it seems to be taking a leftward turn--which I don´t see--it´s because he´s being as faithful to the times as he possibly can and we know--don´t we?--what was going on in England immediately after WWI.

There´s great banter between the dueling grandmothers, the conservative aristocrat Maggie Smith´s character and the eccentric American leftist played by Shirley MacLaine.

Having seen every episode, it definitely took a downhill turn in S2. S3 is actually worse in some ways, especially the entirely over-the-top PC Thomas storyline.

#8 Hat tip. I guess the Downton Abbey detractors prefer to watch Honey Boo Boo or DWTS? We thoroughly enjoy every episode. Julian Fellowes is a marvelous talent and the acting is top notch!

The union representing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials will officially oppose the proposed Senate immigration reform legislation on Monday, according to an advance statement obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. The National Citizenship and Immigration Services Council (USCIS Council) says the legislation fails to address its top concerns about the current system, including the pressure on USCIS officers to approve visa applications without thorough review and the bureaucratic barricades that prevent them from coordinating with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials. Sources say it is highly unusual for the USCIS Council to weigh in publicly on legislation.

WASHINGTON — I WENT to New York last week to cover the TV presentations for the new season, shows like “Scandal,” “Shark Tank” and a faltering “American Idol.” I may as well have stayed here. You know that the faltering American idol in the White House must be reeling in this scandalous spring. No Drama Obama is immersed in drama so over the top it could have been scripted by Shonda Rhimes and Karl Rove. Just four months after his second inauguration, the president is buffeted by gushing investigations, smug and deranged Republicans, and cat-who-ate-the-canary conspiracists.

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. In the wee hours of the morning of January 27, 2013, a Wikipedia editor named “Qworty” made a series of 14 separate edits to the Wikipedia page for the late writer Barry Hannah, a well-regarded Southern writer with a taste for the Gothic and absurd. Qworty cut paragraphs that included quotes from Hannah’s work. He removed 20 links to interviews, obituaries and reminiscences concerning Hannah. He cut out a list of literary prizes Hannah had won. Two edits stand out. Qworty excised the phrase “and was regarded as a good mentor” from a sentence that started:

"As Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth might have said, this was ´weekus horribilis´ for President Obama. Three fires in the form of three scandals to put out in one week. Are locusts next? The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
