| Ingesting glass does not lower your cholesterol, but patients taking Ranbaxy’s generic version of Pfizer‘s blockbuster cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor might be doing just that. Ranbaxy announced today that it was recalling a large number of batches of its generic Lipitor as they might include very small glass particles – something that could be dangerous if ingested. Generics from other manufacturers have not been recalled. The recall is a small positive for Pfizer, which makes branded Lipitor. Pfizer has a generic drug division named Greenstone and some consumers might feel most comfortable asking for the Greenstone generic Lipitor.

Comments: One company - Ranbaxy, in India - whose problems began when Daiichi Sankyo bought a controlling interest.

The FDA needs to go away and a qualified body of private sector scientists should take their place. Judging by most federal agency performance, they would do a better job at roughly one fourth the cost.

The FDA has no jurisdiction over foreign made products, just like the FAA has none over foreign made parts for airplanes. The Federal government is very cozy with big pharma, and big everything else.

FDA exercises ridiculous clout over domestic drug manufacturers, doing costly investigations at its whim. (They do exercise "discretion" in allowing companies free rein, such as J&J as mentioned in the article.)
Capricious regulation domestically and only cursory inspections overseas naturally drives drug manufacturing out of the USA, to the detriment of consumers.

I find this hard to swallow (pun intended). One night at a restaurant, my husband was served his dinner with broken glass in it. Big pieces -- not finely ground glass. He went to the emergency room, and the doctor said to just wait and let it pass.
The doctor said, "You know those magicians that eat pick up trucks? They really do it. The alimentary canal has an amazing capacity to disipense of foreign materials. For me to try to remove the glass will cause you a lot more pain than the glass."
He waited. It passed. He was fine.

This is scary! I started this drug just before Labor Day Weekend and got so sick I stopped taking it within three days. I felt for a rare time in my life that I was gong to die. I think that stopping it when I did saved life.

You started Ranbaxy generic Lipitor, #11, or you started regular Pfizer Lipitor? My husband has taken 40 mg daily of real, not generic, Lipitor for many many years with no problem.

#7 - that´s called "the statin shuffle" and stopping when you did saved you a boatload of trouble.
DH took statin for cholesterol for about 14 months and the side effects turned him into an Alzheimer´s zombie. After almost two years off the drug he is still like a recovering amnesia patient with only ´a little´ permanent brain damage.

I have had a LOT of trouble with generic Synthroid and generic ZOCOR. It was so bad my Dr. went through hoops with my insurance to insist I get the brand. Generics are NOT identical. My moderately elevated (slightly above the new markers) cholesterol seems to be managed nicely now with red yeast rice, and only (1) 600 mg/day capsule rather than the recommended (2). Also (1) Omega 3 fish oil 1200IU caplet. Take both of these at night, as that is when statins are recommended to be taken.
DH is on simvastatin 40MG - Teva, which is made by an Israeli company. The generic made by Lupin, a Goa company, had side effects that were not optimal, so a restriction to Teva brand was set up with the pharmacy.

Re #21, the generic Lipitor is being made by more than one company.
The only company that had the problem is the one described in this article. Ranbaxy. The others are OK.
Check with your pharmacist. (Our generic meds have an abbreviation on the label that identifies the manufacturer.) You can request that you receive a certain manufacturer´s brand of the generic Lipitor.

Among the criteria by which the Internal Revenue Service selected groups in for its political targeting program in 2012 was "educating on the constitution and bill of rights" (lowercase in original), according to the Inspector General´s Report. Lois Lerner, who directs the office at the center of that effort, has received her own education in the Constitution.(Snip)Josh Marshall, proprietor of TalkingPointsMemo.com, concedes that Lerner "has every right" to invoke the Fifth Amendment "and may be wise to do so. But that´s a decision that simply is not consistent with her remaining in her job.

CINCINNATI, OH - The claim that the ongoing IRS scandal is limited to low level employees is falling apart. The six Cincinnati workers we have identified, who sent scrutinizing letters to conservative groups with words including "patriot, liberty, tea party or 9-12" in their names are Mitchel Steele, Carly Young, Joseph Herr, Stephen Seok, Liz Hofacre and a woman identified only as Ms. Richards. (Snip) Because all six of our IRS workers have different individual and territory managers, Cindy Thomas is one manager they all have common.

We can now officially call the Obama administration besieged. One of President Obama´s underlings is set to plead her Fifth Amendment Right against self-incrimination in the burgeoning IRS scandal. The Los Angeles Times broke the story: Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won´t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening - or why she didn´t disclose it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor III. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
