New federal law may
make replacing your
furnace much costlier

Replacing an aging furnace could cost homeowners thousands of dollars more after May 1, when new federal energy efficiency standards take effect for northern states, including New Jersey. The new energy-efficient natural gas furnaces aren’t that much more expensive themselves, but they must be vented directly to an outside wall rather than through the chimney, which can increase installation costs dramatically, home heating contractors say. The new rules will not affect homeowners with gas-burning boilers that heat water for radiator systems. But the bulk of homeowners in North Jersey will be affected, since up to 80 percent of homes

Comments:
Article says these Department of Energy feelgood laws are thanks to the 2007 US Congress, which allowed formulation of regional efficiency guidelines. (No presidential "veto" pen in evidence.)

Similar "green" millstones are set to detonate in heat pump and AC systems in Southern states.

Polls consistently show that folks want the government to stay out of their lives and then they vote for Democrats. What goes through their heads?

Idiotic talk about conserving energy.

Meanwhile the entire Northeast U.S. (especially NJ) has so much firewood on the ground that nobody will even pick it up.

I suppose they´ll say that the interstate commerce clause allows the federal government to tell me what kind of a furnace I have to buy.

They´re just now requiring furnaces with 90% efficiency? I got a new furnace in 2004 and it was 92% efficient.

I guess dem voters will be in trouble when they have no job and have to replace a furnace. Perhaps they can get some money from Obama´s stash to add to their unemployment check and food stamps.

Not only are applicances more expensive, they don´t last as long. My family had a 1950´s refrigerator that is still out in garage. I am on my second refrigerator in 14 years. I have replaced the AC unit twice since living in this house and I do not buy bottom of the line or go with fly-by-night companies.

One reason fridges don´t last as long now is because they changed the metal they use in the coolant coils. Not as sturdy, and all it takes is a microscopic pinhole and the whole fridge is toast. This is what an appliance repairman told me.

The Federal government has no business in the "efficiency" business. Let the market decide.

Department for Education inspectors said that girls in a school at the centre of the so-called “Trojan Horse” plot were forced to sit at the back of the class, some Christian pupils were left to “teach themselves” and an extremist preacher was invited to speak to children. The report, into three schools in the city, follows weeks of controversy over the alleged plot to “Islamise” secular schools in Birmingham

Louisville, Ky. — Could climate change mean paying more for your morning cup of coffee? One climate panel says "yes." According to the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC), pests, rising heat and extreme temperatures resulting from climate change may actually impact the supply of coffee. The news has those in the coffee industry worried. "I am very concerned," said Mauricio Galindo, head of International Coffee Organization. "I would say climate change is the most serious threat to the sustainability of the coffee supply chain right now." The IPCC says that a temperature rise of just 2 to 2.5 centigrades

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.
