Natural gas explosion rocks
downtown Springfield

A natural gas leak in Springfield tonight has left two-and-a-half blocks of houses and stores in shambles, authorities said. The “whole city block went up due to a gas explosion,” Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney said. Police and fire officials, as well as gas company workers and the Springfield mayor are on the scene, Delaney said. A witness in a nearby barber shop told WWLP-TV he heard a loud explosion that knocked him to the other side of the store. He said he looked up the street and saw one building severely damaged.

Comments:
This City was hit by a tornado last year.

Sometimes we get complacent because we don´t live in a hurricane, tornado, flood, earthquake, etc etc area and think "we are safe". This shows you never know when or where a disaster may occur. We should all be prepared for instantaneous survival, should we survive death then perhaps no home, water, electric, food and so on. Start stocking up. Three days is no longer the limit. It could last weeks and months (see Staten Island).

Yeah I know, we´ll do it "tomorrow". (smile)

Wasn´t this tactic on the list of things the islamo terrorists were trying to do right after 9/11. I remember at least one plot to blow up an apartment that was foiled. Maybe they are still mad about that video.

Seems like these massive explosions are happening awfully frequently. The one in Indianapolis a couple weeks ago leveled a whole neighborhood and killed 2.

Not to minimize this disaster for the victims, but given we have 2.3 million miles of underground pipelines in this country, it´s a wonder it doesn´t happen more often.

A person is in custody tonight after police report suspicious bags were found at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street. An eye-witness told the Herald tonight a man dressed all in black and wearing a black veil walked down the middle of Boylston Street, with a backpack on his back, chanting "Boston strong, Boston strong." "He was weird looking," said Matthew VanWinkle. "He was wearing a black veil, a black hat, and no shoes." The bomb squad is now on the scene and police have pushed everyone back. A bomb squad member yelled "fire in the hole" as they

Kyiv- A recording proving that Russia is backing separatists in eastern Ukraine has surfaced online. The SBU (Security Service of Ukraine) taped the operatives, whose code names are "Nose," "Adler," "Shooter" and "Agath," discussing strategy, weapon stockpiles, and requests for reinforcements. The SBU has identified the number calling the separatists in Ukraine as having a Russian +7 area code. The person with the Russian number asks Shooter to contact him. Later in the conversation, Shooter reports “fighting off the first (Ukrainian) attack” and shooting “some significant (highly-ranked Ukrainian) people."

Frank Armstrong never got the chance to know 8-year-old Martin Richard in this life. Nevertheless, the BPD captain in charge of Area E-18 in Hyde Park keeps a picture of the marathon bombings’ youngest casualty on the wall in his office. The Dorchester boy who loved the Bruins, and the 53-year-old cop, who grew up five houses away from where the Richard family lives, share a bond that is as heartbreaking as it is heartwarming. For nearly 12 hours on that fateful Patriots Day a year ago, Frank Armstrong led a squad of Boston police officers who stood watch over

BOSTON - After taking heat from some of its own over a decision to grant an honorary degree to an advocate for Muslim women who has made comments critical of Islam, Brandeis University withdrew the honor Tuesday night. The university said in a statement that Somali-born Ayaan Hirsi Ali would no longer receive the honorary degree, which it had planned to award her at the May 18 commencement. Ali, a member of the Dutch Parliament from 2003 to 2006, has been quoted as making comments critical of Islam. That includes a 2007 interview with Reason Magazine in which she

About 10 investigators with Boston Fire´s Arson unit this morning entered the four-story brownstone on Beacon Street where six days ago a roaring blaze claimed the lives of two firefighters. The arson investigators entered the building around 10 a.m. On Wednesday, Lt. Edward Walsh and Michael Kennedy died after being trapped in the basement of the 298 Beacon St. building during the roaring 9-alarm blaze. Deputy Chief Joseph Finn, who commanded the firefighters last week and made the decision to pull firefighters from the wind-driven fire, was also on scene. He had no comment when he exited the building shortly

A day after the flames thwarted his efforts to save Lt. Edward J. Walsh and firefighter Michael R. Kennedy in the basement of a blazing Beacon Street brownstone, Capt. Neal Mullane of Ladder 18 in South Boston, his own scalp gashed and burned, found himself drawn to the Back Bay firehouse that has become a kind of chapel for his grieving brethren. Mullane, 42, was one of the officers tapped at a moment’s notice to command as the Rapid Intervention Team at the nine-alarm fire. He described the desperate detail to the Herald’s Laurel J. Sweet.

BOSTON — A judge has placed a Connecticut girl in the permanent custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families in a legal dispute involving different medical diagnoses by two hospitals. Massachusetts Juvenile Court Judge Joseph Johnston in Boston issued the ruling Tuesday in the case of 15-year-old Justina Pelletier of West Hartford, Conn., whose parents sought custody. A Pelletier family friend says they´re devastated by the ruling. The Massachusetts DCF took emergency custody of Justina last year. Tufts Medical Center had treated Justina for mitochondrial disease, a disorder that affects cellular energy production. But Boston Children´s Hospital later

Neurosurgeon Ben Carson says the White House wanted him to apologize for “offending” President Obama after he famously delivered a conservative message at the National Prayer Breakfast last year. Carson, the former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, recalls the events surrounding his 2013 speech in his new book, One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future. The Daily Caller obtained an advance copy of the book, which is set for release May 20. “He did not appear to be hostile or angry,” Carson writes of Obama, “but within a matter of minutes after the conclusion of

President Obama inspired a generation of young people to support his historic election in 2008. And in 2012, despite the struggles of his first term, Mr. Obama still managed to win the support of a full 60% of voters age 18-29. But the man who once dreamed of being a transformative leader in the Reagan mold is inspiring few of those young people to follow his lead. "For all the talk about the movement that elected Mr. Obama, the more notable movement of Obama supporters has been away from politics. It appears that few of the young people who voted

On Saturday, I wrote about the standoff at Bundy Ranch. That post drew a remarkable amount of traffic, even though, as I wrote then, I had not quite decided what to make of the story. Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Chelsea Clinton says when people ask her these days whether she wants to go into politics, her answer isn’t an automatic “no.” The 34-year-old former first daughter told Fast Company in an interview published Monday, “for so long the answer was just a visceral no. Not because I had made any conscientious, deliberate decision, but since people had been asking for as long as literally I could remember, it was no." Now, the only child of former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton explains, "I live in a city and a state and a country where I

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

Megyn Kelly’s "Kelly File" is a great news show. She’s incisive, informed and customarily handles the toughest guest with aplomb. But her lengthy interview of Facebook C.O.O. Sheryl Sandberg about her second book in the Lean In series Lean In: For Graduates was a head shaker. Amazing that she of all people allowed Sandberg to restring the same old, same old, shamed, and shopworn feminist myths about women and girls and then jangle it in front of her viewing audience like something new out of the box. Indeed Kelly all but genuflected in front of this woman. Kept her on thru

Western Washington University sent a questionnaire to students asking them for advice on how the administration could succeed at making sure that in future years, “we are not as white as we are today.” The question notes that WWU’s racial make up does not perfectly reflect the nation at large, and asks students to consider strategies that other universities have used to focus on skin color as the paramount indicator of a student-applicant’s worth. The president of WWU has stated that his explicit goal is to reduce the white population on campus, according to Campus Reform. “I’ve said before and I’ll say it
