| Before Hurricane Sandy blasted the Northeast, I had long believed that America was "veddy, veddy good" to us. Even though our area was one of the hardest hit, my belief never changed but many here in Staten Island who´d lost everything would not share that viewpoint. America has enjoyed one of the highest standards of living and most have avoided serious deprivation nevertheless our government lists more and more as living below the poverty level. But the only Americans who have really suffered true physical hardship and deprivation as bad as those suffered in the Great Depression are our military.

FTA: "The youth of the Western World has no concept of history or what their grandparents lived through. The greatest generation that overcame so much in the Great Depression yet succeeded in life gave birth to the worst one - mine. The worst of us then went on and spawned an even more spoiled and ignorant group that showed up on Wall Street full of contempt, whining about everything from racism to student loans they have no intention of paying back."
This is just one of the many truths contained in this wonderful article. It really is a must read.
An aside on this day of thanksgiving. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to Ms. Lucianne and her wonderful staff for creating an oasis of education, warmth, humor, and an occasional rant or two in the dry desert that is the main stream media. Blessings to you all.

´´Republicans still have control of the House and in this case, gridlock is a good thing.´´ Absolutely, spot on Alicia. Too bad so many Americans don´t realize government is the problem. Not the solution. ´´Thirty-three states now have Republican governors who can wield the power of states´ rights to nullify bad laws.´´ (are you counting Khris Kringle Christie in the 33?) and my Gov. Corbett along with the RINOs who are implinenting Obamacare´s insurance ´´pools´´?

I have often thought the same thing and wondered how such an amazing group of people could raise children who rejected all of their values. The reality is that it was not the parents but the media that began to influence and corrupt the youth of America, generation after generation.
We went from watching Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver, to RugRats and Nickelodeon where no show has any responsible adults. The media imparts its corrupted values onto our children.
Add in the disruption of the family influence because of the necessity of having 2 working parents, and all the values taught at home by stay at home moms when the greatest generation was raising kids became much more limited due to time constraints.
Our schools became bastions of the liberal/progressive ideology, teaching children America is bad and evil. Many minorities teach their children to hate those with success.
I count my blessings every day, but after counting my blessings, I pray for our country that we can somehow turn things around. After this election, I am truly concerned.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

i am so stunned. really i am.
Of all the things I have read from the NE about Sandy, Ms. Colon´s testimony is the most damning.
Is Alicia Colon the ONLY decent adult on Staten Island? Maybe so.
After every hurricane on the gulf coast, but especially after Katrina, I see what is greatest about America and what to be thankful for:
Americans.
People who reach out and help. People who strive with me.
Compare them to the Muslims ( who are citizens of a different nation where ever they are ) and you´ll see Iraq, Gaza and the stingy Tsunami aid. Compare them to Africans and see the starvation in Zimbabwe ( which used to export food )and the genocide in Rwanda. Hell, Compare them to France that had 15,000 ( that´s fifteen THOUSAND ) elderly die in a heat wave?
Now, Ms Colon informs me that Staten Island is a foreign country.
Come home, Alica Colon.

Whoa. Did not write this to disparage Staten Islanders, many of who are going through very rough times and are grateful for the thousands of volunteers who have rushed to their aid. This Island bears little resemblance to a foreign country because it is predominantly conservative and ignored by the mayor and state.

Oftentimes, the greatest blessings we have are memories of Thanksgivings past. However, today we live in a dangerous time and a Constitutionally damaged country. God is singularly testing the citizenry of this nation to determine which it holds more dear, the strength of men and human solutions, or the power of God and His grace blessings. The sacrifice of our Founding Fathers in establishing this nation was great, but even they recognized the greatest sacrifice of all was the saving work of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Do you know Him? He was nailed to a despicable instrument of Roman execution on the hill of Golgotha, a punishment reserved for the most vile of criminals, a wooden cross. The perfect, sinless, God-Man, the Lamb of God, willingly went to the cross, despising the shame, rejected by His own people, and given a common criminal´s death accomplished His Father´s Plan to become the perfect and absolute sin sacrifice for us all. (end pt 1)

As we enjoy this Thanksgiving, more than any other, turn your face to God and give Him thanks for our redeemer from the slave market of sin and physical death, His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. We can only know our Savior, Jesus Christ, and accept His saving work on our behalf by believing in Him. He already bore your sins, past, present, and future. He already knows every sin you have ever committed, or will commit. He knows you better than you know yourself. Not only that, but he has already forgiven you for everything that´s incompatible with His perfect essence, and yet He still wants an eternal relationship with you. The proof of that desire was His bearing your sins in His body on the cross. This will be the greatest of all Thanksgivings, if you make the decision to believe in Him.
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." John 14:6
"Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." Acts 16:31
May God Bless America

Every now and then, amid the chaos and the engulfing darkness, a moment of clarity, of lifting light. Such moments are indeed blessings.
Let us not simply absorb them. Let us reflect and magnify them.

I understand what you´re saying. No, you didn´t write to disparage anyone. You wouldn´t do that. That´s why I invited you to come home.
Just to the south of me, my great grandfather´s house went down in Katrina. My parents, in their 70´s, left it as it was flooded and made their way to my house on higher ground. A million dollar home with irreplaceable antiques, under insured of course.
But I met a man who had returned from Houston for his family. He had spoken to his wife as the storm came ashore and she refused to leave the home without him there. She and 3 of his 5 children were lost.
My family hadn´t lost anything, and neither have most of the people on Staten Island.

Excellent piece. Saving it to share.
I´m one of those "hayseed hicks from the South". I grew up hearing stories, from my grandparents and parents, of the hard times suffered and the blessings received during the Great Depression. Alicia is right, that history is an education sorely needed by today´s youth.
I can still see and hear, in my memories, my grandfather,"Papa", standing in front of our little country church congregation, and leading his favorite song:
Count Your Blessings.
When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one, Count your blessings, see what God hath done! Count your blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly, And you will keep singing as the days go by.
Refrain
When you look at others with their lands and gold, Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold; Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
Refrain
So, amid the conflict whether great or small, Do not be disheartened, God is over all; Count your many blessings, angels will attend, Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
I´m thankful for every blessing, especially for knowledge of the saving good news of Christ´s Gospel, and the family who lived it from the time of my great-grandfather. I´m thankful for being American, and having a knowledge of what that means. I´m thankful for fellow Americans who love our country, and have shown, and show it by word and deed. May God bless, guide, and strengthen us to be the people he wants for us to be.

With Anthony Weiner about to pop into the race for mayor, one of his Democratic rivals demanded yesterday that he pony up $350,000 for the cost of the election required to fill his hastily vacated congressional seat two years ago. Weiner resigned under pressure in June 2011 after it was disclosed he was tweeting lewd pictures of himself to women he’d met on the Internet. In the special election held that September to replace him, Republican Bob Turner pulled off a stunning upset victory over Democrat David Weprin. Taxpayers were stuck with the $350,000 election tab,

From the outset, Internal Revenue Service lawyers based in Washington, D.C., provided important guidance on the handling of tea-party groups’ applications for tax-exempt status, according to both IRS sources and the inspector general’s report released in mid May. Officials in the Technical Unit of the IRS’s Rulings and Agreements office played an integral role in determining how the targeted applications were treated, provided general guidelines to Cincinnati case workers, briefed other agency employees on the status of the special cases, and reviewed all those intrusive requests demanding “more information” from tea-party groups.

After almost nine months, during which we have seen a bogus State Department press release, Rose Garden denouncements, a Treaty Room statement, Andrews Air Force base condolences, 25,000 documents, an Accountability Review Board report, a Senate report, depositions, press briefings, Congressional hearings, and Obama administration officials trolling on Sunday talk shows, it’s time to play Benghazi CLUE! America needs to know if Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, or any of the other suspects used a dagger, a knife, a rope, or a candlestick in the library, the conservatory, or the billiard room.

The Washington Post reported today that, in the course of a leak investigation of a State Department employee who allegedly provided Fox News’s James Rosen with classified information, the Obama Justice Department not only subpoenaed Rosen’s private e-mails but also said that Rosen was “an aider and abettor and/or co-conspirator” in the alleged crime. Rosen was not charged with any crime, but it is unprecedented for the government, in an official court document, to accuse a reporter of breaking the law for conducting the routine business of reporting on government secrets.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

There’s really no reason for the press to suggest that the recent slew of scandals involving the Obama administration — Benghazi, the AP phone-record seizure, the snooping in James Rosen’s e-mail, the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups, and so on — are a confusing jumble. There is a very clear thread running through all of the administration’s actions: The U.S. deputy chief of mission in Libya, Gregory Hicks, says that he was told not to speak to a member of Congress about Benghazi without a State Department lawyer present, that he received a phone call from Hillary Clinton’s
