Before Hurricane Sandy blasted the Northeast, I had long believed that America was "veddy, veddy good" to us. Even though our area was one of the hardest hit, my belief never changed but many here in Staten Island who´d lost everything would not share that viewpoint. America has enjoyed one of the highest standards of living and most have avoided serious deprivation nevertheless our government lists more and more as living below the poverty level. But the only Americans who have really suffered true physical hardship and deprivation as bad as those suffered in the Great Depression are our military.
FTA: "The youth of the Western World has no concept of history or what their grandparents lived through. The greatest generation that overcame so much in the Great Depression yet succeeded in life gave birth to the worst one - mine. The worst of us then went on and spawned an even more spoiled and ignorant group that showed up on Wall Street full of contempt, whining about everything from racism to student loans they have no intention of paying back."
This is just one of the many truths contained in this wonderful article. It really is a must read.
An aside on this day of thanksgiving. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to Ms. Lucianne and her wonderful staff for creating an oasis of education, warmth, humor, and an occasional rant or two in the dry desert that is the main stream media. Blessings to you all.
´´Republicans still have control of the House and in this case, gridlock is a good thing.´´ Absolutely, spot on Alicia. Too bad so many Americans don´t realize government is the problem. Not the solution. ´´Thirty-three states now have Republican governors who can wield the power of states´ rights to nullify bad laws.´´ (are you counting Khris Kringle Christie in the 33?) and my Gov. Corbett along with the RINOs who are implinenting Obamacare´s insurance ´´pools´´?

I have often thought the same thing and wondered how such an amazing group of people could raise children who rejected all of their values. The reality is that it was not the parents but the media that began to influence and corrupt the youth of America, generation after generation.
We went from watching Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver, to RugRats and Nickelodeon where no show has any responsible adults. The media imparts its corrupted values onto our children.
Add in the disruption of the family influence because of the necessity of having 2 working parents, and all the values taught at home by stay at home moms when the greatest generation was raising kids became much more limited due to time constraints.
Our schools became bastions of the liberal/progressive ideology, teaching children America is bad and evil. Many minorities teach their children to hate those with success.
I count my blessings every day, but after counting my blessings, I pray for our country that we can somehow turn things around. After this election, I am truly concerned.
Of all the things I have read from the NE about Sandy, Ms. Colon´s testimony is the most damning.
Is Alicia Colon the ONLY decent adult on Staten Island? Maybe so.
After every hurricane on the gulf coast, but especially after Katrina, I see what is greatest about America and what to be thankful for:
People who reach out and help. People who strive with me.
Compare them to the Muslims ( who are citizens of a different nation where ever they are ) and you´ll see Iraq, Gaza and the stingy Tsunami aid. Compare them to Africans and see the starvation in Zimbabwe ( which used to export food )and the genocide in Rwanda. Hell, Compare them to France that had 15,000 ( that´s fifteen THOUSAND ) elderly die in a heat wave?
Now, Ms Colon informs me that Staten Island is a foreign country.
Whoa. Did not write this to disparage Staten Islanders, many of who are going through very rough times and are grateful for the thousands of volunteers who have rushed to their aid. This Island bears little resemblance to a foreign country because it is predominantly conservative and ignored by the mayor and state.
Her site was hacked and she was given a death threat. she is asking for help. (Via facebook) If anyone can help or point her in that direction, please go to FB & send her a message. You can do that without being her FB friend.
whats up with her site?? hacked...and now i read she received death threats?? alicia,i see you read our site as well..(how cool is that?)..if there is anything we can do to help, let us know...P.S...thanks for responding to my email...it was a small gesture but speaks volumes of your manners and etiquette..God bless..
As we count our blessings here at LDot this morning, gratitude to our Lucianne Team for posting beautifully thoughtful and truthful messages like this from Alicia Colon ... And continued prayers of for her and Staten Island residents, fellow LDotters, and America...
Oftentimes, the greatest blessings we have are memories of Thanksgivings past. However, today we live in a dangerous time and a Constitutionally damaged country. God is singularly testing the citizenry of this nation to determine which it holds more dear, the strength of men and human solutions, or the power of God and His grace blessings. The sacrifice of our Founding Fathers in establishing this nation was great, but even they recognized the greatest sacrifice of all was the saving work of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Do you know Him? He was nailed to a despicable instrument of Roman execution on the hill of Golgotha, a punishment reserved for the most vile of criminals, a wooden cross. The perfect, sinless, God-Man, the Lamb of God, willingly went to the cross, despising the shame, rejected by His own people, and given a common criminal´s death accomplished His Father´s Plan to become the perfect and absolute sin sacrifice for us all. (end pt 1)
As we enjoy this Thanksgiving, more than any other, turn your face to God and give Him thanks for our redeemer from the slave market of sin and physical death, His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. We can only know our Savior, Jesus Christ, and accept His saving work on our behalf by believing in Him. He already bore your sins, past, present, and future. He already knows every sin you have ever committed, or will commit. He knows you better than you know yourself. Not only that, but he has already forgiven you for everything that´s incompatible with His perfect essence, and yet He still wants an eternal relationship with you. The proof of that desire was His bearing your sins in His body on the cross. This will be the greatest of all Thanksgivings, if you make the decision to believe in Him.
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." John 14:6
"Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." Acts 16:31
I understand what you´re saying. No, you didn´t write to disparage anyone. You wouldn´t do that. That´s why I invited you to come home.
Just to the south of me, my great grandfather´s house went down in Katrina. My parents, in their 70´s, left it as it was flooded and made their way to my house on higher ground. A million dollar home with irreplaceable antiques, under insured of course.
But I met a man who had returned from Houston for his family. He had spoken to his wife as the storm came ashore and she refused to leave the home without him there. She and 3 of his 5 children were lost.
My family hadn´t lost anything, and neither have most of the people on Staten Island.
I´m one of those "hayseed hicks from the South". I grew up hearing stories, from my grandparents and parents, of the hard times suffered and the blessings received during the Great Depression. Alicia is right, that history is an education sorely needed by today´s youth.
I can still see and hear, in my memories, my grandfather,"Papa", standing in front of our little country church congregation, and leading his favorite song:
Count Your Blessings.
When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one, Count your blessings, see what God hath done! Count your blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly, And you will keep singing as the days go by.
When you look at others with their lands and gold, Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold; Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
So, amid the conflict whether great or small, Do not be disheartened, God is over all; Count your many blessings, angels will attend, Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
I´m thankful for every blessing, especially for knowledge of the saving good news of Christ´s Gospel, and the family who lived it from the time of my great-grandfather. I´m thankful for being American, and having a knowledge of what that means. I´m thankful for fellow Americans who love our country, and have shown, and show it by word and deed. May God bless, guide, and strengthen us to be the people he wants for us to be.
Major U.S. cellphone providers received more than $20 million from law enforcement agencies in conjunction with more than 1.1. million user information requests in 2012, according to documents released Monday by Sen. AT&T said it received $10,298,000, T-Mobile USA said approximately $11 million, Verizon Wireless said less than $5 million, U.S. Cellular said $241,000 and C Spire said $55,000.
NEW DELHI— The Dalai Lama will not attend memorial services for fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela in South Africa, where the Buddhist spiritual leader has twice been unable to obtain a visa, a spokesman said Monday. Tenzin Takhla gave no specific reason for the Dalai Lama missing the memorial service in Johannesburg and funeral in Mandela´s hometown, saying only that "logistically it´s impossible at this time." The Dalai Lama — based in the Indian hill town of Dharamsala since he fled China in 1959 — was welcomed to South Africa in 1996 and met with Mandela when he was South
Newspaper editors typically operate behind the scenes, overseeing reporters inside the newsroom and outside the spotlight. But since Ricardo Baca was named the marijuana editor of The Denver Post last month, he has been celebrated across the globe. He has appeared on CNN and “The Colbert Report.” Long-lost high school acquaintances have surfaced, with one inviting him to his friend’s basement for a smoke. Emails have flooded in from freelancers and readers, offering up their expertise on the subject matter. “We’re taking an extremely credible, professional approach to this,” Mr. Baca said. “I was surprised that it was such an immediate punch
There has been much ado about MSNBC anchor Martin Bashir´s contemptible attack on Sarah Palin, which has now resulted in Bashir resigning from the left wing network. But to those of us who write from the right his remarks are anything but unique. Despicable remarks are hurled at us all the time and the only difference about the Bashir flap is that ours usually come anonymously via email or snail mail. In my experience, the most hateful responses I´ve ever received are for columns addressing either gay rights or radical Islam. In 2007, I wrote a column for the New York
4 Things the MSM Won’t Tell You About Obama’s Inequality Speech: Now that the excitement has died down You have to admire President Obama for choosing to give a speech declaring that the fight against “growing inequality”–specifically economic inequality–is “the defining challenge of our time” and the “focus” of “all our efforts”–given that: a. Five years into his presidency he so far hasn’t done anything to stop growing income inequality–the problem has gotten worse on his watch. b. He doesn’t have any proposals (“It’s time to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act”) that come close to solving the problem as he defines it.
I’ve never been flogged in the public square, but now I have a rough idea what it’s like. On Thursday, Harvey Weinstein, the US distributor of the Judi Dench-Steve Coogan film “Philomena,” placed a full-page, color attack ad in The New York Times that screamed my name in blood-red letters. “The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and USA Today ALL PRAISE ‘PHILOMENA’ WITH A 92 % CERTIFIED FRESH SCORE ON Rotten Tomatoes,” read the ad. “BUT THE NEW YORK POST’S KYLE SMITH HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION. ‘ANOTHER HATEFUL ATTACK ON CATHOLICS.’ ” The ad (now brightening the wall over
Dayna Morales, the server who claimed last month to have been left a note about her “lifestyle” instead of a tip, was fired from her restaurant Sunday, and is reportedly returning the donations she received in the outpouring of sympathy after her story went viral. Morales, an openly-gay server at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, NJ became a cause celebre after she posted a receipt informing her she had not been tipped because of her lifestyle. But her story began to unravel when the couple who left the receipt disputed Morales’ story, and provided bank statements showing they had in fact tipped
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
