| Paterson — A man was critically wounded after being shot while trying to rob a bodega in an unexpected encounter for the man and his partner in the midst of a string of 11 similar robberies during the past week, police said. An employee of the store confronted two men wearing black clothing and masks and shot one of them during the holdup at El Jaya Deli Grocery at 8th Avenue and 22nd Street, police said. Police later pulled over a vehicle and arrested Jermaine Eason, 23; Rayvon Wilson, 23, and the car’s driver, Clara Amala, 22,

Comments: Article goes on to note that the hero´s gun might not be "registered," and that he might not have a carry permit (a near certainly in NJ; many states do not require carry permit at place of business). Being gun-free NJ, the hero probably faces more prison time than the robbers.

Five bucks says the deli owner gets more time in jail if the gun´s unregistered than Jermaine gets for the serial robberies. Jermaine had a difficult childhood

FTA: "Lt. Richard Reyes said the bodega employee was “feeling extremely stressed” afterward and was taken to the hospital. He declined to release the employee’s name. Police have temporarily confiscated his gun while investigating the shooting.
Reyes would not say whether the weapon was properly registered or whether the employee had a permit to carry it, both required under New Jersey law. No charges have been filed against him."
Watch for charges to be filed. No good deed goes unpunished.

Trenton — As Congress debates an overhaul to the federal immigration system, New Jersey lawmakers again took up controversial legislation today that would allow students living in the country illegally to pay in-state tuition at the state’s public colleges. The bill, dubbed the “Tuition Equality Act,” was approved by the state Assembly Budget Committee after a lengthy hearing in Trenton. The crowd in the chamber, which included immigrant students who have been pushing for the change for years, cheered as the committee moved the bill. The legislation will now go to the full Assembly for a vote.

Passengers on NJ Transit’s No. 113 Express bus were taken on a ride from hell during Thursday’s morning rush when a lost driver took a really scenic route to New York, leaving commuters nearly two hours late for work. The express from Dunellen to the Port Authority Bus Terminal became a local—and then some. Passenger Aileen Iosso sent this text to her boss: "I don’t know where I am and I don’t know when I’ll be in." She said she boarded her usual express bus in Cranford around 7 a.m., expecting to arrive at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan

Chicago — Former President Bill Clinton sat down with Gov. Chris Christie today to talk about New Jersey´s recovery from Hurricane Sandy—touching on the state´s emotional connection to the Shore, the need for another source of flood insurance, and the governor´s famous "get the hell off the beach" comment. The interview closed out a three-day conference in Chicago held by the Clinton Global Initiative, the organization Clinton founded. Sandy devastated New Jersey—especially its shoreline—last fall, leaving million without power and seriously damaging hundreds of thousands of homes. In all, New Jersey suffered $39 billion in property damage.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush (R) argued Wednesday that the United States should pass immigration reform because the U.S. economy needs the labor of young immigrants, and immigrants are “more fertile.” “Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans,” Bush said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to the Majority conference. “Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.” Bush said immigrants are an advantage that the United States has over China, Europe and Japan, which don’t have the same

Vienna - Wanted: A jester. Wallflowers need not apply. It´s no joke. An Austrian hotel is advertising for a modern-day court fool, who is communicative, extroverted, musical, creative and imaginative. Applicants are asked to bring—and play—their musical instrument during the job interview. Also welcome: creative costumes. The successful candidate will earn 1,400 euros—around $1,900—a month. Hotel director Melanie Franke says those interested should not think they´re on a fool´s errand in applying. She says the idea is to treat guests like royalty, noting that "jesters were a luxury that royal families indulged themselves in."

For the first time, America´s racial and ethnic minorities now make up about half of the under-5 age group and will be a majority by this year or next. That´s according to new census numbers that show a faster shift than expected toward a minority-majority, one where whites will be in the minority by 2043. The new estimates also show that, for the fist time in more than a century, the death rate for white Americans outnumbers the birth rate. Just a year ago, numbers showed that whites had fallen to a minority among babies. Fueled by immigration

It´s brought to you by the letter P — for prison. PBS’s "Sesame Street" is moving from ABCs and counting numbers to offering its young viewers a bigger lesson in life: how to cope when Mommy or Daddy lands behind bars. Called "Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration," the program is distributing "tool kits" to schools, community centers and even jails in 10 states — including New York — starting today to help kids ages 3 to 8, organizers said. According to one "tip" for caregivers, "Before you visit your incarcerated loved one, let your child know some of the things she can expect

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. And Sarah blasted him on Twitter as a bully. Is that, is it, is he a bully? Is he a bad, what is he?

Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
