Geithner: End debt ceiling,
´sooner the better´

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Friday that Congress should stop placing legal limits on the amount of money the government can borrow and effectively lift the debt limit to infinity. On Bloomberg TV, “Political Capital” host Al Hunt asked Geithner if he believes “we ought to just eliminate the debt ceiling.” “Oh, absolutely,” Geithner said. ... “It would have been time a long time ago to eliminate it. The sooner the better."

Comments:
Interesting....never once heard him answer the debt crisis question this way before the election. Hey...I guess deception is the norm these days.

At some point, if such mind-numbing stupidity is not effectively made illegal among our officials, we are going to fall apart.

They do these things because they know there are no repercussions.

But..but...but...we MUST still have a lot of money...there´s LOTS of checks still left in the checkbook!!
Talk about a fiscal cliff!

I keep thinking that at some point, Harvard, Yale, et.al. will demand the return of the degrees held by their respective alumni who make such blatantly idiotic remarks. Surely somewhere there is a Board of Regents with a single honest member saying "He said what?"

End the Debt ceiling? End the Republic!
I have a better idea. raise the debt ceiling by 40billion every 60days. Just enough to put off default and keeping next years deficit at 240billion. That is a lot better than 1.2 Trillion. :-)

Geithner, despicable, wants a blank check on spending and money printing. That would leave Congress with no role in the nation´s affairs, but rubber stamping Obama follies.

House GOP has to attach a limit to what the Federal Reserve can purchase/hold in Treasury & Agency obligations. Fed is currently largest buyer of federal debt, giving Obama and Dems a credit card without borrowing limits. Don´t need the Chinese, just an accommodative Ben Bernake.

What??!!

A limit on spending??!! For Washington politicians who don´t have the common sense of a teenage alcoholic?

Don´t all parents give their kids the keys to the car, the liquor locker, and a limitless credit card without asking a single question?

That´s all that little Timmy wants.

Might as well end the debt ceiling since neither party observes it. Whenever spending approaches the ceiling, both parties play a little political ping pong with it and ultimately agree to raise it. Perhaps more basic financial management might be in order for government programs. But, as former congressman Simpson of the bi-partisan commission said, suggest a little shared responsibility and you get your shorts ripped off.

#4 my ex actually actually used that kind of reasoning.

On a serious note, I hold President George W. Bush in high regard, but he and the republicans didn´t seem to be bothered with spending limits. Both parties share the guilt.

The repubs need to simply shut down the government for 3 years.... A CR for military, and CR for SS/Medicare. No other budget allocated or approved.

Lay off their staff and still "work" to keep the EO train less on.

It´s the only way they are going to stop these idiots.

Of course, the pubbies will cave instead.

Geithner, the tax cheat, is a fool. Until this country goes back to fiscal responsibility, we will be going down the road to ruin. Can any smart person actually believe that we can keep spending at an astonishing rate, then print more dollars to cover the cost, and think it will not collapse the whole system? Geithner is both ignorant and arrogant. We have people living in houses right now for free; they were allowed to buy houses they could not afford. We have a student loan debt in this country bigger than the credit card debt. GM is selling cars to people with no money, no down payment, and since Ally, their financial company is owned 80% by the American taxpayer, we are again continuing the GM bailout. We are giving illegals welfare, food stamps, and government assistance; when is this going to stop?

Around the same time the nation was transfixed on the hunt for the Boston Marathon bombers last month, thieves on the other side of the country pulled off a little-noticed heist -- swiping 559 pounds of explosives from a federal storage facility in Montana. As of Friday, not one ounce of it has been found. The incident, federal officials believe, was not terrorism-related. But it´s the latest to raise security concerns in an age when authorities are warning about the desire of violence-bent terrorists to inflict mass casualties with bombs.

President Obama found himself weathering bipartisan broadsides Wednesday as he sent Congress his 2014 budget proposal, which in its effort to please both sides of the aisle has ended up angering both. The budget arrived on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning, delivered 65 days after the legal deadline. The $3.77 trillion spending plan, which is over 2,000 pages, tries to curb deficits by further raising taxes on top earners and reining in the growth of Social Security.

The Internal Revenue Service on Friday unveiled its proposal to raise tens of billions of dollars through annual fees on health insurers, prompting fierce criticism from industry groups who warn the costs will be passed along to consumers. The proposed rule from President Obama´s healthcare law will be published for public consideration in Monday’s Federal Register. The rule would assess annual fees on most insurers that would total $8 billion next year and rise thereafter, eclipsing $14 billion in 2018, according to the IRS.

The fiscal crisis plaguing Detroit is now in the hands of Michigan´s governor after a state-appointed review team determined the city was in a financial emergency with "no satisfactory plan" to resolve it. Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has 30 days to decide if Detroit needs an emergency manager to take charge of its finances and spending, and come up with a new plan to get the city out of its financial mess. (Snip)The report also said the city´s bureaucratic structure makes it difficult to solve the financial problems.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.
