Bimbo bread in Mx is certainly a very close if not exact copy of wonderbread. We always suspected they were a licensee or something. I think this is a natural, as bimbo already sells a line of hostess look-alike snack food. If you´ve ever eaten local mexican pastries or donuts, you know why the bimbo stuff is popular.

Some of Bimbo´s stuff is pretty good, but it does have that Mexican flavor (not quite as sweet). If they buy the brands, I hope they buy the recipes and stick with them too. By the way, I´m not too sure about using the Bimbo name though...I don´t think anyone wants to buy "Bimbo Ho Ho´s"!!

21 have you been to a convenience store lately? A third or more of the snacks are already made by Mexican companies, including the one menitoned as the buyer for the Hostess brands. Frankly, it is the type thing we should outsource, since there´s really no way to produce this kind of stuff at a reasonable price and pay any decent wage. It´s low end confections. Upper end confections will remain a boutique business and provide decent opportunities.

Ha! I wondered if Grupo Bimbo (beembo - a madeup name that has nothing to do with our definition of bimbo) was going to be the one.

They are the #1 commercial baking company in the world. Their diverse products include Oroweat bread products, Nutella, Ball Park meat products, Boboli, and on and on and on.

Actually three companies are vying for the Hostess brands . Con-agra is one . Bimbo is mentioned here because their offer is about 4+ times the estimated worth of the Twinkie label. The others haven´t made their offers public yet.

Actually, there´s not a lot of distance between a hostess and a bimbo.

It´s an encouragement for Americans to consume higher quality food. Maybe stop at a real bakery, for baked goods.

I have not noticed a lot of US-branded food made in Mexico. Here in Los Angeles of course there are a lot of Hispanic-branded foods that are made there. There have been some cases of lead-tainted candy and such from Mexico - one of the few US (Kroger) labelled foods I *have* seen from Mexico.

OTOH I´m guessing a lot of fresh produce here is from Mexico, fwiw, and I ain´t dead yet.

Mexican bakers would be more likely to use sugar than US bakers - who often use HFCS. Big Corn ain´t gonna be happy.

They utilize plants in this country for their American product lines. One of their two headquarters is in Santa Fe, NM. They own plants all over the world.

The only American company I have seen labeling their product with "Made in Mexico" is good old Kelloggs. Their raisin bran cereal (and possibly others) is made there.

About a year ago, I was on a flight to Kansas City and struck up a conversation with the guy sitting next to me. He was an American manufacturing engineer for Grupo Bimbo. He was on his way to set up a new bakery in the Topeka area that will employ several hundred. He said he lived in San Diego. He said CA was a nice place to live but you don´t want to invest there -- too much red tape. He said Kansas was much more supportive of economic development and helping companies set up plants there.

I suspect if Bimbo SA buys Hostess, the products (Twinkies, etc.) will live, but most of the Hostess employees and distribution centers will be eliminated. bimbo has its own bakeries and distribution system, so they can just fit the Hostess products into their existing US capacity.

Well, if you want a Hostess who´s a Bimbo, Tampa can volunteer Jill Kelley.

Bimbo took over Mrs Baird´s in Texas some years ago. No failing in quality. Bimbo has had good quality and I think they will be very good for the Hostess brand.

Bimbo bought out Ft Worth based Mrs Bairds breads about 10 years ago. Family cashes out, have not noticed a difference in bread. Another reason for sale was they consolidated operations in Ft Worth - assume using American non-union bakers. The smaller ´legacy plants´ were not in compliance with EPA emission rules - they emitted too much VOC volatile organic compounds, and the Baird family didn´t want to throw away millions of $ to satisfy ever-tighter and expensive EPA rules.

This is excellent news. I truly hope every industry that has striking union employees, private or public...immediately goes bankrupt, dissolves, re-organize or is sold to foreign company.

Unions have destroyed the US economy and the quality of service and products.

Worse they exhibit no pride in their labor. Visit the DMV, post office, public school or county hopsital. Their appearance, their behavior and surroundings reflect zero personal pride. Visit a film set with various trade unions...they act like they are doing the director a favor by working their and will only do the work that is outlined in their union contract. So if the power goes out and the electricians union workers are not there yet. No one else can turn on the power. Wonder why film costs are constantly escalating...usually blamed on the actors´ salaries. Wrong. It is the cost over runs from all the demands made by the union contractors. That is why so many American film makers film in Canada and Europe. Duh...

In following the story on the Hostess debacle, and comparing that with my extensive knowledge of how unions and businesses work on the inside, I have to conclude, this was an exceptionally clever deal from the beginning and the unions stepped right into the trap, as the Hostess owners knew they would. This was not a sudden "Oh, No!" moment. The exhaustive and exorbitant union thug gains were just not sustainable and the US gvt was not going to be of any help with union loving Øbama in office. Hostess took a profitable way out, dumped the retirement fund in the lap of the tax payers, and cashed in their chips, very lucratively, I would easily bet. Another stripe on the back of employees from their own government whip! But, it will never be seen that way. I loved it when the union thugs begged Øbama to step in and the idiots had already tied his hands with his Wookie´s movement to make everyone hate snack foods! And the baker´s unions gave thousands to Øbama to get him re-elected!!! I just love things like that.
