The word “foreign” in the name French Foreign Legion does not refer to faraway battlegrounds. It refers to the Legion itself, which is a branch of the French Army commanded by French officers but built of volunteers from around the world. Last summer I came upon 20 of them on a grassy knoll on a farm in France near the Pyrenees. They were new recruits sitting back-to-back on two rows of steel chairs. They wore camouflage fatigues and face paint, and held French assault rifles. The chairs were meant to represent the benches in a helicopter flying into action—

Better pack the SPF90. After decades in the high altitudes, Mojave Desert and tropical locations I developed a nasty case of near fatal skin cancer. My best to the troops, but watch out!

This is the only military force from France deserving any respect. Of course they´re not French.

The sister of a high-ranking Chinese diplomat was busted for alleged shoplifting from the Herald Square Macy’s — and her well-connected family caused a huge scene trying to get her out of police custody, The Post has learned. Guo Wang, 37 — whose brother Bangfu Wang is a section chief in the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs — walked into the Macy’s flagship store Thursday before noon, picked up several shirts and two dresses and took them to the fitting room, sources said. After a few minutes of fidgeting inside, she walked out

In Far Rockaway, Queens, the beloved Rockaway Taco is open again, peddling $3 fish tacos and fresh watermelon juice. Some 75 miles south, in Belmar, New Jersey, a new 1.3 mile boardwalk sports a fresh coat of “spiced rum” colored paint, courtesy of Captain Morgan. And in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, the rickety Jet Star rollercoaster, dramatically submerged in the ocean after Superstorm Sandy, has been demolished to make room for swimming and surfing. It’s the official kickoff of summer, and up and down the East Coast, tourism-dependent towns devastated by Sandy are declaring themselves back in business.

As in “makes another mistake.” Why, what did you think I meant? Get your mind out of the gutter. Sheesh. Yet another embarrassing Weiner picture, courtesy of PoliticsPA: Oops. City in Weiner for NYC Mayor Logo is Pittsburgh Former Congressman Anthony Weiner is running for Mayor of New York City, but his website prominently features the Steel City… The bridge is pretty distinctive, and the building about 40% of the way from the left side is the BNY Mellon Center. The comparisons were inevitable: two guys who became a national punchline after being caught in sex scandals make a bid for a political comeback from disgrace. But once you get past the astonishment and the snickers, the differences are more significant than the similarities between Mark Sanford, the Republican former South Carolina governor elected in a landslide to his old House seat earlier this month, and Anthony Weiner, the Democratic ex-congressman who formally launched his bid for mayor of New York on Wednesday. It is true that both pose tests of the electorate’s capacity for forgiveness. But Sanford

Oklahoma tornado damage

The deadly twister that raked through Oklahoma did an estimated $2 billion in damage, which puts it on track to be the most expensive tornado in U.S. history. That’s the preliminary damage estimate the Oklahoma Insurance Department released Wednesday, two days after a monster twister flattened the city of Moore and killed 24 people, including nine children. The figure was double an earlier estimate. Insurance Department spokeswoman Calley Herth said the monetary damage caused by Monday’s tornado could be greater than the $2 billion in damage from the 2011 tornado that struck Joplin, Mo.

The union representing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials will officially oppose the proposed Senate immigration reform legislation on Monday, according to an advance statement obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. The National Citizenship and Immigration Services Council (USCIS Council) says the legislation fails to address its top concerns about the current system, including the pressure on USCIS officers to approve visa applications without thorough review and the bureaucratic barricades that prevent them from coordinating with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials. Sources say it is highly unusual for the USCIS Council to weigh in publicly on legislation.

Taxing Times for Obama

WASHINGTON — I WENT to New York last week to cover the TV presentations for the new season, shows like “Scandal,” “Shark Tank” and a faltering “American Idol.” I may as well have stayed here. You know that the faltering American idol in the White House must be reeling in this scandalous spring. No Drama Obama is immersed in drama so over the top it could have been scripted by Shonda Rhimes and Karl Rove. Just four months after his second inauguration, the president is buffeted by gushing investigations, smug and deranged Republicans, and cat-who-ate-the-canary conspiracists.

Washington rumor has it that Obama wants to be U.N. Secretary General. There are several reasons that make that likely, and if it´s true, it throws new light on a lot of Obama´s oddities -- including his Royalty Bows, his Apology Tours, his Muslim Sellout, and the Benghazi Cover-Up. But first -- why would Obama be planning to become the chief of the U.N. before he has even finished his second term?

On Wednesday, Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a man who had served Queen and country honorably in the hell of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, emerged from his barracks on Wellington Street, named after the Duke thereof, in southeast London. Minutes later, he was hacked to death in broad daylight and in full view of onlookers by two men with machetes who crowed "Allahu Akbar!" as they dumped his carcass in the middle of the street like so much roadkill. As grotesque as this act of savagery was, the aftermath was even more unsettling

MARK LEVIN: So why didn´t Chairman Issa hold an investigative hearing a year ago? Why didn´t Chairman Camp, all Republicans, hold an investigative hearing a year ago, and all the other tripping over themselves right now? I´ll tell you why. Because the establishment Republicans, the RINO Republicans, despise the Tea Party. They despise the conservative movement. We exist to be managed, to be shuttled to the polling place, to vote for their candidates. The Karl Roves of the world, and all the rest of them. They fight us in the primaries, they fight us at the grassroots.

WASHINGTON —In a dramatic departure from existing White House procedures, President Obama requested today that his staff start cc’ing him on stuff. “Look, I know a lot of you think I’m really busy and you don’t want to bother me,” the President reportedly told his staff in an Oval Office meeting. “But cc me anyway. It’s good for me to keep up on what’s going on around here.” “It’s not good when I turn on the news and they’re talking about something at the White House and I’m like, whoa, when did that happen?”

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) have reversed their longstanding membership guidelines to allow homosexuals to join the organization. The Dots Already Lead To

Abuse Of Power: Any scandal investigation that expects a "Eureka!" moment, a White House e-mail, or Oval Office smoking gun will be misguided. In fact, the dots are already connected directly to the president. Barack Obama is not foolish enough to have a tape recording system hidden in his desk. And his administration staff are not careless enough to send one another incriminating e-mails. If the president was behind the IRS unlawfully harassing conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, we can be sure the communications were all sotto voce and in persona, like any good Chicago political operator.

A Washington state Democrat is accusing Republicans of “throwing American infrastructure … under the bus” after a bridge collapse there this week. The portion of Interstate 5 in Washington that runs over the Skagit River collapsed on Thursday after a truck hit an overhead support structure, but Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) cited the incident in an interview as proof Republicans were blocking infrastructure investment to hurt President Obama politically. “Well, they have clearly spent the whole last five years trying to tear the president down, but they have done it by throwing the American infrastructure and
