| The van of bodies was ready to be driven from Berlin to a cut-rate crematorium in Saxony last month when it was stolen. Families waited for weeks to reclaim the bodies of their loved ones, which were eventually found in Poland. Their distress was a result of what macabre critics are starting to call ´corpse tourism´ - increasing numbers of bodies are being driven hundreds of miles to discount crematoria in distant parts of the country. A fascinating thing of German culture has been the practice of "grave stacking." The way I understand it, graves are rented out for a certain number of years. Then up come the bones (if anything is left), and the tombstone is offered to the family. With an 80 y.o. German woman, I once visited an elaborately decorated cemetery. Disgusted at the competition, she said, "Das ist kein Friedhof; das ist ein Garten!" ("This is no cemetery; this is a garden!”) Yet, the idea of cremation and Germany has some horrible Nazi-era connotations.

An option is to donate one´s body to science. A friend´s father wanted this, and this donation was carried out by the family. The body was transported from the place of death--in this case the home of the deceased---and handled with the utmost care and respect, said my friend.
I plan this for myself, and I have expressed this wish to my family. My husband is considering this also.
As we already have a family plot, my mother is rather aghast at this.

#2, do what you wish, but do not be so starry eyed. Grieving relatives of course are not going to see what goes on behind closed doors.
Stories abound of disrespectful treatment of donated bodies (as well as body parts retained by pathologists).
Occasionally a defense is put forth --e.g. the need for a sort of gallows humor on the part of medical students who are faced with a ghoulish task. One might decide to accept this as part of a "higher good."
On the other hand, one might not.

My attitude toward my own burial is that of St. Monica: "Bury my body wherever you will; let not care of it cause you any concern. One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may be."

There was something rather important missing from this article - religion. Could it be that attitudes towards burial have changed in Germany because Germans have lost their faith and funerals are no longer part of a church ceremony?

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the Obama administration’s denial of asylum granted to the Romeike family, who fled Germany over its strict anti-homeschooling laws. In a press release Tuesday, Michael Farris, founder and chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), said, “We believe the Sixth Circuit is wrong and we will appeal their decision. America has room for this family and we will do everything we can to help them.” The Romeikes fled Germany in 2008 when they were subjected to criminal prosecution for homeschooling, which is largely illegal in their country.

The debate is raging over whether the latest immigration bill is an amnesty for illegal immigrants, but one part is clear: The legislation would forgive businesses that have employed those immigrants illegally. Employers who have allowed illegal immigrants to work off the books can come forward safely and provide their work history without fear of prosecution, and businesses that knowingly employed someone using a bogus or stolen Social Security number likewise would get a pass, according to an analysis of the bill by the Center for Immigration Studies, a think tank that wants a crackdown on immigration.

The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men. Issa didn´t issue a subpoena to former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who co-authored the Benghazi report with Pickering.
