| Hostess Brands Inc., the maker of iconic treats such as Twinkies and traditional pantry staple Wonder Bread, is shuttering its plants and liquidating its 82-year-old business. A victim of changing consumer tastes, high commodity costs and, most importantly, strained labor relations, Hostess ultimately was brought to its knees by a national strike orchestrated by its second-largest union. The work stoppage, launched Nov. 9 by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union to protest a fresh labor contract, affected about two-thirds of Hostess´s 36 plants. The strike was making it impossible for the Irving, Tex., company to continue producing

Comments: Don´t you love it when the union leader shoot themselves in the foot? I feel sorry for the people who didn´t want to strike but got swept along in this mess.

One third of the workers were union. ONE. THIRD. And yet they brought everyone down. May the union card holders in this travesty NEVER find work again.

Oh, the union bosses accomplished exactly what they intended to. It was intended as a lesson to other companies: go along with us or we´ll make you shutter the plant, even if we don´t represent the majority of your workers. The union bosses don´t care about the workers, only their own power and money.

Unions just killed off another American company. Since SCOTUS has ruled corporations are people, too, I wonder if it´s possible to get the heads of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union charged with homicide? Worth a try.

The word "Maker" in the headline strikes me. It takes at least ten makers to pay the salaries alone of each gov´t worker making the same pay. Not counting all the other costs of running the gov´t and handouts, plus state and local. What is the ratio right now? I wonder.

Sorry for the non-union employees losing their jobs. I wish someone with the knowledge and experience would start a job force data base for conservatives searching for work; rather like an Angie´s List of motivated employees. Conservatives must help each other get through these hard times.
As to the impact of Hostess closing upon me personally, not to worry. I have a copycat Twinkie filling recipe that gets raves every time I serve it. Yum.

Enniskillen, Northern Ireland—President Barack Obama and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin clashed openly over Syria as world leaders began a summit here Monday, sharply underscoring deepening differences over the civil war. (Snip)But the two dug in over their differences, with Russia backing the regime of President Bashar al-Assad with heavy weaponry as the Obama administration has ordered the Central Intelligence Agency to begin arming Mr. Assad´s opponents. The central disagreement is over the fate of Mr. Assad, Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, told reporters Monday night.

I’ve been in this economics business for a while. In fact, I’ve been in it so long I still remember what people considered normal in those long-ago days before the financial crisis. Normal, back then, meant an economy adding a million or more jobs each year, enough to keep up with the growth in the working-age population. Normal meant an unemployment rate not much above 5 percent, except for brief recessions. And while there was always some unemployment, normal meant very few people out of work for extended periods.

Last month the Congressional Budget Office released its much-anticipated projections for debt and deficits, and there were cries of lamentation from the deficit scolds who have had so much influence on our policy discourse. (Snip)The answer is that the long-term upward trend in health care costs — a trend that has affected private insurance as well as Medicare — seems to have flattened out significantly over the past few years. Nobody is quite sure why, but there are indications that some of the cost-reducing measures contained in the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, are actually starting to “bend the

Houtson--As a partner and chief diversity officer at Thompson & Knight, Pauline Higgins was not afraid to press the issue of hiring minorities at the 126-year-old Texas law firm. But when she left in 2008, she was replaced by an associate with less influence. Now, current and former partners say, the diversity committee meets less often, and the firm has fewer black lawyers than before. It is a trajectory familiar in many elite realms of American professional life. Even as racial barriers continue to fall, progress for African-Americans over all has remained slow

Windsor NC--Loggers here are clear-cutting a wetland forest with decades-old trees. Behind the move: an environmental push. The push isn´t in North Carolina but in Europe, where governments are trying to reduce fossil-fuel use and carbon-dioxide emissions. Under pressure, some of the Continent´s coal-burning power plants are switching to wood. But Europe doesn´t have enough forests to chop for fuel, and in those it does have, many restrictions apply. So Europe´s power plants are devouring wood from the U.S., where forests are bigger and restrictions fewer.

Shanghai--The Chinese government is planning for private businesses and market forces to play a larger role in its economy, in a major policy shift intended to improve living conditions for the middle class and to make China an even stronger competitor on the global stage. (Snip)On Friday, the Chinese government issued a set of policy proposals that seemed to show that Mr. Li and other leaders were serious about reducing government intervention in the marketplace and giving competition among private businesses a bigger role in investment decisions and setting prices.

Some of the nation´s largest banks, including Wells Fargo [WFC +1.58%] & Co., suspended foreclosure sales in a number of states following guidance issued last month by federal banking regulators. While some foreclosures have since resumed, the halt marks the latest dustup over how foreclosures are handled. Banks said their actions were triggered by a four-page bulletin issued last month by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve. The bulletin outlined basic operating standards for foreclosure sales. Many of the nation´s largest banks were already operating under consent orders with the OCC or the Fed

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
