| A report in the Chinese state-run Xinhua outlet claims that President Barack Obama congratulated Xi Jinping on his "election" to be the top Communist in China. Jinping will be the next president of China, and now controls the Chinese military. This kind of letter, which is based upon a false understanding of human nature and international relations, at the very least gives its recipient the wrong impression. At worst -which is what I really fear and believe- it reflects Obama´s actual view of the way the world works. Any self-respecting foreign autocrat will, and should, view it and its author with contempt, while making a note to themselves that in all probability they are dealing with a weakling and a fool. If Obama would transfer some of his diplomacy and kow-towing that he lavishes on foreign adversaries of America to the Republicans and other domestic political opponents, the much discussed, desired, and largely mythical bipartisanship might become at least a partial actuality. But he is a man who cannot even work honestly, trustingly and constructively with Republicans, yet who actually appears to believe he is going to engage productively with foreign nations and groups whose interests are contrary to those of America. This weird delusion is characteristic of Leftists in general. They regard their domestic political opponents as inveterate and unscrupulous enemies with whom it is impossible and even hazardous to negotiate, while bending over backwards to befriend and trust open, obvious, declared enemies of America.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says it wants as many as 20 percent of its workers to "telework," use an "alternative work schedule," or do both, in order to "reduce green house gas emissions," decrease "employee stress," and give these government workers more time for "planning and preparing healthy meals." So says one of the HHS "performance measures" detailed in an appendix to the department´s latest strategic plan. HHS´s performance measure "4.D.05" says: "Increase the percent employees on telework or on Alternative Work Schedule." Telework means working from home via phone and computer.

Bloodletting, in the form of firings, dismissals, resignation, and expulsions, is a tribal rite in political Washington. It is most often used by the powerful on anyone less powerful as a symbolic sacrifice. Steven Miller, the now former acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, is the latest victim of ritual sacrifice. This week the Obama White House demanded his resignation to demonstrate the president’s “anger” at news that the IRS targeted conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status for added review and slow approval. Next, we’ll watch as Congress takes up the bloodletting knife.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate."
