I wish I could believe "the full extent of the looming disaster is beginning to dawn on the American people" No, half of the American people, maybe, i.e. the thinking ones, the ones pulling the wagon, the ones with the most to lose, the ones who believe in the founding principles of our county, the ones who want to see America once again the leader of the free world. The rest of the electorate just doesn´t care, at least as long as the "free stuff" keeps showing up.

Among the criteria by which the Internal Revenue Service selected groups in for its political targeting program in 2012 was "educating on the constitution and bill of rights" (lowercase in original), according to the Inspector General´s Report. Lois Lerner, who directs the office at the center of that effort, has received her own education in the Constitution.(Snip)Josh Marshall, proprietor of TalkingPointsMemo.com, concedes that Lerner "has every right" to invoke the Fifth Amendment "and may be wise to do so. But that´s a decision that simply is not consistent with her remaining in her job.

CINCINNATI, OH - The claim that the ongoing IRS scandal is limited to low level employees is falling apart. The six Cincinnati workers we have identified, who sent scrutinizing letters to conservative groups with words including "patriot, liberty, tea party or 9-12" in their names are Mitchel Steele, Carly Young, Joseph Herr, Stephen Seok, Liz Hofacre and a woman identified only as Ms. Richards. (Snip) Because all six of our IRS workers have different individual and territory managers, Cindy Thomas is one manager they all have common.

We can now officially call the Obama administration besieged. One of President Obama´s underlings is set to plead her Fifth Amendment Right against self-incrimination in the burgeoning IRS scandal. The Los Angeles Times broke the story: Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won´t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening - or why she didn´t disclose it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor III. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.

One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.

Apple is one of America´s most profitable companies. And it pays a substantial income tax bill to the U.S. government -- by its own account, $6 billion in 2012 and an estimated $7 billion this year. But many tax experts and lawmakers say Apple´s tax bill should be bigger. A lot bigger. The concern is that Apple (Snip), while complying with U.S. laws, is nevertheless taking advantage of loopholes in the tax code to shift a substantial amount of income to offshore subsidiaries in low-tax countries. The result is billions of dollars in profits every year that go untaxed.

You almost have to admire Carl Levin´s timing. Amid a furor over politicized IRS tax enforcement, the Michigan Democrat on Tuesday tried to change the subject to a hardy Washington perennial—corporate tax loopholes. Too bad his designated business pinata, Apple, AAPL -0.74% demonstrates instead the insanity of the tax code that Mr. Levin has done so much to write. Mr. Levin unveiled the results of his months-long investigation into Apple´s corporate taxes (Snip)What Mr. Levin did not do was present any evidence of anything illegal or even inappropriate. He did prove that Apple has smart accountants and tax lawyers.

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
