Fiscal Cliff Calamity
Weekly Standard, by Irwin M. Stelzer

Let’s be clear what the bargaining over the fiscal cliff is all about. It is not about a long-term solution to our run away deficits and the iceberg looming in the distance: entitlement spending that will sink our fiscal ship. It is not about extracting more revenues from “the rich,” however defined. (Snip)There is something gallant about Republicans who believe they really know the economic impact of a few percentage points increase in marginal rates, and are willing to go down fighting to prevent such an increase. But there is something reckless about becoming tax-fight kamikazes

So now,the republicans need to cave on being against higher taxes. The left is licking their lips at this prospect. It doesn´t matter that raising taxes on the rich will produce this or that amount of revenue. Rich people can easily devise ways to knock down their tax liability.

Tax rates are a distraction from the real problem of excess spending. Why are we spending 500-800 billion more a year than when Bush left office. Social programs only account for some of that. The rest is pure budget padding so government workers can get performance bonuses at the end of the budget year.
What´s it going to cost taxpayers to fly Hillary Clinton to a stupid wine testing event is Austria or wherever. How about the state dept spending millions on flying chefs around the world to improve diplomatic relations?
Tax increases on whomever aren´t an answer to stupid and reckless gov´t spending.

You could give Obama and the left $2 trillion more a year to spend and it wouldn´t improve the economy one bit.

If you don´t think leftism is pure insanity, listen to this. There was a woman on the radio the other day saying that since aging baby boomers aren´t driving as much it´s hurting gas tax revenue. Even if this is true why isn´t current gas tax collections doing anything for roads or bridges? States use transportation revenues to shore up underwater pension accounts.

Billions were sent to New Orleans over the years to shore up the levees and it was wasted by crooked NO bureaucrats on other things like bronze statues. Then when they broke during Katrina people said more money needs to be spent on them.

The Weekly Standard is losing it. It helps nothing to cave on taxing the rich. Everyone needs to pay more. The debt is that serious a threat to us. Let ALL the Bush tax cuts expire. Let them call it going over the cliff. Just let ALL the Bush tax cuts expire. Life will go on and the republicans will have done the right thing for the country.

If the U.S. was a socialist nation 230 years ago, we would be living in log cabins, riding horses, burning cow chips for heat.

Government is responsible for almost nothing productive, just a portfolio of social disasters. When is enough enough?

So, according to this article, if the Republican party is going to be ´relevant´, it has to become Democrat-lite. Forget that.

This fiscal cliff is YOUR party line, Donks. Remember the malaise (brief) that followed the ´93 tax increase? A repeat on steroids is avoidable, predictable and you can´t stop yourselves because it plays to your hatreds.

RE the drop in gas revenues: Spend a minute and look at this site:

http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=A103600001&f=M

Yup... gov numbers. Gas consumption is HALF of what it was in the Bush years. What is going on? Dunno... but I know it´s Obama.

BTW--lots of layoffs going on... anybody see press coverage?

I would let the tax cuts expire for everyone, but this government will just spend the extra revenue and the debt will continue to climb.

The ironic thing is that even if they do raise the tax rate on the wealthy, the wealthy will not pay any more in taxes. They will simply make adjustments that negate any impact to their income. Those adjustments will negatively impact the economy. I expect tax revenue to decrease rather than increase as a result.

Its been projected that the tax on the rich will cost the economy 750,000 jobs. It will impact(lower) the deficit about $800 billion. That means instead of owing 16 TRILLION...we owe 15.2 TRILLION. How does that solve the problem. It appears to make it worse, because now we have another 750,000 unemployed people who not only are not paying any taxes, but they are collecting government benefits.

Those who know economics know that the Clinton tax rates will produce more revenue, not from the top rates, but from the lower brackets. Many more people will have skin in the game. This is particularly true for the Payroll Tax Holiday which reduced the burden of that tax. The people that will see the largest increases in their tax rates are the poor and middle class. There may be some increased revenue from the rich, but they have been preparing their strategies for how to defer or shift income to tax free sources.

The famous Clinton White House document known as "the conspiracy commerce memo" has finally surfaced. The memo, which details how right-wing conspiracy theories made their way into the mainstream press, was written in 1995 and first acknowledged by the White House in 1997. The idea of a “conspiracy” was also famously referred to by Hillary Clinton in 1998, when she cited a “vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he ran for president.” The memo, part of the latest trove of documents released by the Clinton Presidential Library on Friday, outlines “the communication stream of conspiracy

President Obama signed an executive order today extending eligibility for the third-highest Defense Department recognition to foreign armies. “Executive Order 12019 of November 3, 1977 (Establishing the Defense Meritorious Service Medal), is amended by inserting, ‘or to any member of the armed forces of a friendly foreign nation,’ after ‘any member of the Armed Forces of the United States,’” said the short order. Poland and the United States will announce next week the deployment of U.S. ground forces to Poland as part of an expansion of NATO presence in Central and Eastern Europe in response to events in Ukraine. That was the word from Poland’s defense minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, who visited The Post Friday after meeting with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon on Thursday. Siemoniak said the decision has been made on a political level and that military planners are working out details. There will also be intensified cooperation in air defense, special forces, cyberdefense and other areas. Poland will play a

AMSTERDAM -- Charlotte van den Berg was a 20-year-old college student working part-time in Amsterdam´s city archives when she and other interns came across a shocking find: letters from Jewish Holocaust survivors complaining that the city was forcing them to pay back taxes and late payment fines on property seized after they were deported to Nazi death camps. How, the survivors asked, could they be on the hook for taxes due while Hitler´s regime was trying to exterminate them? A typical response was: "The base fees and the fines for late payment must be satisfied, regardless of whether a third party,

MOKPO, South Korea -- A prosecutor says that the third mate steering a South Korean ferry at the time of a major accident was navigating those waters for the first time. Senior prosecutor Yang Jung-jin told reporters that the 25-year-old mate was steering the ship as it passed through an area with lots of islands clustered close together and fast currents. The ferry sank Wednesday. More than 270 people are still missing. Yang says that another mate usually took controls through the area. But because heavy fog caused a departure delay, the third mate was steering the ship through the waters. Yang says

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. Shortly after the Supreme Court’s decision on Obamacare, the CBO projected that 9 million people would buy Obamacare-compliant insurance through newly established government-run exchanges. Now, after an enrollment period that his administration expanded by about two months—to more than half a year—President Obama says that 8 million people have “signed up” for (but in many cases haven’t actually bought) insurance through those exchanges. The Obama administration’s stated goal was to have 39 percent of those who bought such insurance be between the ages of 18 and 34. Now Obama says the actual percentage is 28 percent. Only in Washington, D.C. could someone

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

First, the good news: We are close enough to the end of the Obama presidency for his crowd to talk about a presidential library. Now, the bad news: Obama´s retirement is still 1,008 days distant. Plenty of time though to round up the dough to build it somewhere. Figure they need Solyndra-style money, at least $500 million. The last two presidents – Bill Clinton and George W. Bush -- built their legacy edifices totally with private money. [Snip] However, Obama supporters have a different take. They think taxpayers should put up $100 million in public money for Obama´s library.
