| Janeane Garofalo could face a heavy tax bill after discovering that she has unknowingly been married for the past 20 years. The 48-year-old stand-up comedienne, actress, liberal political activist and writer told the New York Post that she and her then boyfriend of one year, Rob Cohen, had wed in Vegas ´as a joke´ in 1991 - but didn´t imagine it would be formally recognized. Now, however, legal experts warn there could be a serious financial fallout. Top divorce attorney Raoul Felder told Page Six today: ´It could be a train wreck and not so casual. The highest tax rate

Oh, don´t be too hard on yourself, #1. I´ll be disgusted at myself for you. Heck, my wife already is (at me, not you). But you have to agree, it couldn´t happen to a more deserving person. But whatcha bet Da One intervenes and the IRS never goes after her?

Besides, as an 0bama-loving, card-swearing liberal, she´ll jump at the chance to pay her fair share of all the back taxes.

Deliberately making "a joke" out of something as solemn as marriage sounds like "tempting fate" to me, Janeane. One might even say you had this coming.
Hearing that JG just discovered someone divorced her 20 years ago wouldn´t surprise me. I´d gnaw my own arm off to get away from her if I woke up and learned I was married to her.
But hearing someone married her to begin with is blowing my mind. Her aggressive habit of insulting everybody and everything decent makes her superlatively repulsive to me.

Conspicuous and hideous during the Bush years, this nasty piece of work seems to have crawled under a rock over the last four years. Sadly, today´s news should pull her out, making the rounds on tv, spouting bitter and ugly. The upside, she´s that much older, tailor made to repel.

Yeah, she should be proud to pay more taxes. It is not only patriotic but its the humanistic thing to do! Oh it should make you feel so good--in fact, the more you pay, the better!

As the article states, the tax rate for a married person filing single is the highest. (As opposed to married persons filing jointly, which most do.)
And she made a bundle of money during that period.
I´m not sure the statute of limitations works when you misstate your filing status. Those pesky little boxes at the top of the return. And then your rate is computed on the basis of that check mark. Not sure at all....

Not just a tax bill, but a divorce settlement in a community property state (Kalifornia). That guber she married has a claim on half the wealth she earned/accumulated in the last 19 years.

Some don´t seem to understand that filing as a Single person (which she apparently has been doing) is not the same as Married Filing Single. The tax rate for the latter is the highest. Higher than Single or Married Filing Jointly.

Trenton — As Congress debates an overhaul to the federal immigration system, New Jersey lawmakers again took up controversial legislation today that would allow students living in the country illegally to pay in-state tuition at the state’s public colleges. The bill, dubbed the “Tuition Equality Act,” was approved by the state Assembly Budget Committee after a lengthy hearing in Trenton. The crowd in the chamber, which included immigrant students who have been pushing for the change for years, cheered as the committee moved the bill. The legislation will now go to the full Assembly for a vote.

Passengers on NJ Transit’s No. 113 Express bus were taken on a ride from hell during Thursday’s morning rush when a lost driver took a really scenic route to New York, leaving commuters nearly two hours late for work. The express from Dunellen to the Port Authority Bus Terminal became a local—and then some. Passenger Aileen Iosso sent this text to her boss: "I don’t know where I am and I don’t know when I’ll be in." She said she boarded her usual express bus in Cranford around 7 a.m., expecting to arrive at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan

Chicago — Former President Bill Clinton sat down with Gov. Chris Christie today to talk about New Jersey´s recovery from Hurricane Sandy—touching on the state´s emotional connection to the Shore, the need for another source of flood insurance, and the governor´s famous "get the hell off the beach" comment. The interview closed out a three-day conference in Chicago held by the Clinton Global Initiative, the organization Clinton founded. Sandy devastated New Jersey—especially its shoreline—last fall, leaving million without power and seriously damaging hundreds of thousands of homes. In all, New Jersey suffered $39 billion in property damage.

Vienna - Wanted: A jester. Wallflowers need not apply. It´s no joke. An Austrian hotel is advertising for a modern-day court fool, who is communicative, extroverted, musical, creative and imaginative. Applicants are asked to bring—and play—their musical instrument during the job interview. Also welcome: creative costumes. The successful candidate will earn 1,400 euros—around $1,900—a month. Hotel director Melanie Franke says those interested should not think they´re on a fool´s errand in applying. She says the idea is to treat guests like royalty, noting that "jesters were a luxury that royal families indulged themselves in."

For the first time, America´s racial and ethnic minorities now make up about half of the under-5 age group and will be a majority by this year or next. That´s according to new census numbers that show a faster shift than expected toward a minority-majority, one where whites will be in the minority by 2043. The new estimates also show that, for the fist time in more than a century, the death rate for white Americans outnumbers the birth rate. Just a year ago, numbers showed that whites had fallen to a minority among babies. Fueled by immigration

PBS’s "Sesame Street" is moving from ABCs and counting numbers to offering its young viewers a bigger lesson in life: how to cope when Mommy or Daddy lands behind bars. Called "Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration," the program is distributing "tool kits" to schools, community centers and even jails in 10 states — including New York — starting today to help kids ages 3 to 8, organizers said. A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her. According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,”

This is the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of How Democracies Perish, an analysis of the spread of world communism by Jean-François Revel, one of freedom´s most serious French defenders since Tocqueville. At the heart of this work, Revel details "The Tools of Communist Expansion," among which the most relevant for understanding our current situation comes in Chapter 16, "Ideological Warfare and Disinformation." The profound simplicity of Revel´s nuts and bolts account of totalitarianism´s Cold War advance, far from being obsolete
