| It was her six-minute mile that did it. Or her youth. That´s the assumption about the choice by David Petraeus, America´s most-revered military statesman, to pursue an extramarital affair with Paula Broadwell, who co-wrote a biography of him. (Snip) Age or looks matter, yet only secondarily. The force driving all these gents is probably something stronger than sex. What drives them is narcissism. To label someone as noble as Petraeus with psycho-jargon would be tacky if this particular psycho-jargon didn´t capture so much.

It´s really amazing how, once you move a coat or two, all the skeletons you´ll find in closets of even the "squeaky clean" and "revered" military statesmen. Makes you wonder what the average Joe is hiding. The true number of cheaters in this country must be staggering.

Astounded at the number of stories being posted about this. Here in the Midwest, I can actually hear the the laughter and clinking of glasses at the White House.

She´s two decades younger and made a big play for him. Of course its about sex! But then again with men sex is intimately tied to our own egos and narcissism so the writer does have a bit of a point

My husband is a narcissist, but now I am aware of that totally. Don´t like him. But if Patraeus is anything like my husband, I wonder how kind he was to his wife.

This writer makes a rather complicated case for what in most instances is a remarkably simple matter. She has multiplied explanations beyond necessity and been unfaithful to the Principle of Parsimony aka Ockham´s Razor. Narcissism there may or may not have been, but the sine qua non was sex, simple, straightforward, old fashioned sex. I am not at all sure that draping this all too familiar phenomenon in the psychobabble du jour adds anything to our understanding of it. It is such a commonplace story as to be boring save for the players involved, their official and semi-official relations with others, and of course the role General Petraeus might or might not have played in the ongoing Benghazi coverup. We have by no means heard the last of this. It is time to shift our gaze from the rather ordinary sex and the psychobabble to the implications and connections to the national security and interests of the United States.

Gen. John Allen has been appointed special U.S. envoy on security issues in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. He will not mediate between the parties; his work will almost exclusively involve contacts with Israel. Allen will deal with the U.S. position on Israeli security needs and the security arrangements that would accompany the establishment of a future Palestinian state. Senior U.S. and Israeli officials note that while U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel made the appointment it was coordinated with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is leading the effort to restart Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
