Folks, docs encourging their kids to head for Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner careers. Family docs retire, quit, threaten - the system´s response = So What? They are already being replaced with NP or PA. They are doing it now.

Perhaps the doctor gap can be filled by a slew of Ferdinand Waldo Demaras. That would be funny since our president is a modern day Demara already.

Add to the foregoing that doctors are not taking new Medicaid patients. They are keeping the ones they have but not adding any. This because Medicaid payments are not forthcoming from the state/fed. So, with shrinking numbers of doctors and increasing number of Medicaid patients......ooops.

We will start importing them like England but there still won´t be enough. Rationed healthcare, lower quality, long waits, more cost, fewer doctors and nurses with less training and less resources, higher death rates, less innovation, less medication, less life saving technology... THIS is the reality.

But hey, all the tramps can get free birth control and abortions up to the day of birth and the dogs can have sex with whomever they like and never have to worry about wearing a condom or changing a diaper. And they won´t have to pay back their student loans either so the party will never end, right... right? THAT is what it is all about folks. The Boomer´s kids learned a lot from mom and dad. God help us all.

Doctors are not slaves. The choice is relatively simple for general practioners. A) You join a large group, like Obama darling Kaiser, or B) you keep a private practice and avoid dealing with Medicare, Medicaid and all other government dictated services. Under A), you are an employee, eventually an employee commanded by the government. Under B, you do pro bono work on the side or you cut your hours, whatever you need to do to pursue life, liberty and happiness.

When you look at the cheerleaders for government take over of healthcare, the doctors tend to be research oriented, teachers or adminstrators. It´s easy for them to applaud government control as they think it will make their life more simple and that they can use their wits t extract plenty of dough for whatever they do.

The future is simple. Good doctors will go to a cash only business where they can charge what they want and won´t have to employ staff members whose sole job is processing insurance claims from the government and private insurance companies. So you will be required to purchase insurance. But you only use it to see a bad doctor. Rich people such a politicians, actors, etc. will have the finest medical care and the rest of us will be told to go bite on a stick.

Crash the economy while culling the herd. Win/win for stinky.

The Benefit - Cost of becoming an MD went South some time ago. It´s no longer at the top of the socio-economic pyramid (the top slot would be race-hustler). The UK, about 30 years ahead of US in this matter, entry to Med School is not particularly difficult - at least not when compared to Veterinary School where it is very difficult to gain a place. In the US, Physical Therapy programs have lower acceptance rates than do many medical programs.

Gee, why weren´t they reporting this 2 weeks ago? Everyone who understands the healthcare industry knew this. Romney tied to explain that this same problem was headed to Medicare with the $716 billion moved to Obamacare. Both the president and AARP took the untenable position that the $716 billion didn´t change anyone´s coverage; it just got rid of "excess payments´. Well, hello - those "excess payments" are the reason that more docs took Medicare than took Medicaid. With those gone, Medicare is now a loss business for doctors; most won´t continue to take Medicare patients. Medicaid patients already couldn´t find docs, and now Medicare ones as well.

A doc from India at Duke saved my life, so they aren´t all bad. However he left! Went back to India.

#18, I visited Russia last year. The tour guide was a daughter of a doctor. What you described in your post was exactly how she described the medical system in Russia. She said no one goes to the government doctors; they are terrible. There is an entirely separate cash-based system.

Just helped a pre-med student switch his major to chemical engineering in spring semester. Why? He told me that he does not want to work for the government.

I gotta learn a second or third language so I can speak with my next doctor as mine of 25 years is retiring and going to cut wood for people´s fireplaces. He´ll make more and pay less in taxes...

Silly question: if we have a shortage of primary care physicians because they are underpaid, why don´t they just pay them more? Is it that the compensation is set by the government?

Progressives hope to offer a family access to a doctor if they euthanize their family members over 60... Poor folks can be ordered around like slaves... old folks are a drain on a socialist economy.

Well, I´m 78 and I hope I don´t get sick. Death panels are in my future, even though they claim they don´t exist. Sarah was right, as usual. If I ever thought this country would come to this, I would have moved to Thailand or Central America, but it´s too late now. Yeah, I coulda lived like a king!

With national health care looming large, two years ago I sought a young (late 20s-early 30s) primary care physician that we liked and who liked us. And found one, at a local doc-in-a-box. As it happened, he´s a Texas Aggie, like Mr. A, and so there was that instant rapport. We discussed a government takeover of health care early on and he commented that he and the staff were "terrified." It was a good pick.

For Christmas, I´ve just bought one of those enormous boxes of Whitman´s chocs (you know, about the size of a Victorian paving stone) for the staff and will supplement with a fruit basket for those on a diet. The doc will get a bottle of single malt, as will the PA who´s extremely competent--and also very likeable with a wicked dry sense of humor. If I have time I´ll make Swarovski Christmas earrings for the female staff and wives.

This is how it´s done in the UK if you have any sense. Dad always did it year round, taking chocs plus flowers, fruit, and veggies from his garden for the staff, a bottle of good scotch for the doc. They know he appreciated their help and concern and treated him very well.

There are always loopholes in any government bureaucracy and they will be found and used if you treat your favorite doctors and staffs with the respect, courtesy, chocs and scotch they deserve.

Not included in the estimate is the fact that, when the cost declines to zero for a large number of new healthcare recipients, their use of the system will skyrocket well beyond expectations.

The Democrat Party can claim all the credit for destroying the American health care system. Remember this in November, 2014. The looter moocher crowd don´t vote much in off year elections, so all real Americans and conservatives can rip the Demos a new one.

There are already provisions in Obamacare to import a big number of foreign doctors and nurses to hold down costs. Chances are they will not have the same level of qualifications as American trained doctors and nurses and will come mostly from the third world.

Our family doctor retired and another one we know also retired. Apparently 1984 has finally arrived. 0bamacare views us all as impersonal, ´´units.´´ Take a number and wait. With Barrycare, why are 52,000 more family doctors needed to keep up with the growing and increasingly older US population? Barrycare stipulates that when the old get sick, they´re provided with an aspirin and told to die.

Reply 31 beat me to it. Let me add, after WWII, Russia began to suffer a lack of doctors due to the poor financial return for for years of study. Men deserted the field. The profession became filled with women. After it became a woman´s job, money became even less. Some of these women left the profession for the more lucrative field of prostitution.
