DENVER — It’s traditional for Americans to threaten to move to France or Canada when their candidate loses, but this year some disappointed voters are implementing a different plan. In the wake of the Nov. 6 election, petitions seeking to secede from the union have been filed on behalf of 23 states on the White House website, https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions. Most of the petitions contain the same wording and ask to withdraw “peacefully” from the United States in order to form independent governments.
We need to amend the Constitution so that we can have Free & Federal states. Free states are still part of the Union, pay a share of what the Constitution is responsible for--roads, military, etc, but otherwise are free to run their States as they please w/out any mandates and interference from the govt. Federal states can stay with DC rules, regulations & restrictions.
Right to secede? Right to secede?! You must be kidding. Who would grant this right to secede, the Federal Government? No, no, no, there is no legal right to secede. The founding fathers did not have a legal right to secede from the British Empire. They broke the law! They were clearly guilty of treason against the British Crown. They did not ask the Crown for permission to leave. Rather, they informed the Crown and the world that they were going "to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another...". And then they did it. To hell with legalities; it is time to leave.
“Any people, anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right, a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world”. Abraham Lincoln – U.S. Congress, 1847
A little over 10 years later after the South attempted precisely that, Lincoln, when asked, “Why not let the South go in peace”? replied; “I can’t let them go. Who would pay for the government”? “And, what then will become of my tariff”? Abraham Lincoln to Virginia Compromise Delegation March 1861
“When the South raised its sword against the Union’s Flag, it was in defense of the Union’s Constitution.” Confederate General John B. Gordon
There is nothing in the Constitution of the US that addresses a state´s desire to secede or opt out of the Union of the United States.
The last significant attempt to do this by the Southern states began by legislation by the individual states. But, as we know, Lincoln´s will (not the Constitution) was to use federal troops to force those states to remain.
Texans are the only ones who harbor the notion that they were already a country when they joined the union by treaty and have an extraction clause in the agreement. It may not be true but it becomes true if enough Texans believe it. False hope is better than no hope.
Signing the petition will send a message even if nothing comes of it. Obama did not win a mandate. The congress is still the same. They can and should exercise some power and not be so weak and timid. Dems never back down even when the lose.
13 colonies formed the United States all other states except Texas were either purchased or annexed. Most the annexed were stripped of their lands such as Idaho where 66% of the lands were owned by the federal gov. before the latest land protection grabs--now who knows? Texas having won a war with Mexico was a free nation that voted to join the union on their terms including the right to leave if it didn´t work out. Don´t jump into a constitutional session because the result could be the loss of all states rights. If not lost to world government the result could be a nation returned to House of Lords and peons and no Bill of Individual Rights plus a Prime Minister and no Bill of Rights.
The White House is striking back: they´ve got a petition of their own asking that Obama sign an Executive Order to strip anybody who signed a secessionist petition of their American citizenship and deport them immediately.
Maybe that´s why Obama set up those regional ´detention centers´ a year ago and what all those bullets he purchased are for...
Hey #19 I live in Northern Cali in Butte County which is a RED county...dont be so quick to throw out the baby with the bath water!!! You think I like Moonbeam? Or Pelousy? Or Boxer? Or Feinstein? Or the teachers unions? Huh? THINK about that before you make those sweeping ASSumptions! I´ll stay and fight, but I aint moving!
27 States are challenging the Obamacare law and it´s making its way to the SC. We only need 7 more States to make call for a Constitutional Convention. This would mean we could eradicate 60 years of Socialism and Marxist experimentation from our 51st State, the DC based Federal Government.
There is now a petition to deport all those who signed petitions to secede. Sounds good to me. If we are deported that eliminates the need for passports! Good deal! Deport me! Please! I´ll go to either Canada or Scotland.
Finally, after two months of horror, President Obama heard cheering when he discussed ObamaCare. OK, so the cheering came from members of his own staff, who were assembled in the White House briefing room to hear him speak Tuesday afternoon. But listen, the guy has had a hard time since Oct. 1; he can use all the cheering he can get. The speech was promoted as part of an aggressive new effort to promote ObamaCare following the repairs (far from completed) made to the HealthCare.gov Web site. If that was the intent, it was a colossal failure. The president said nothing — and
For years, MSNBC host Chris Matthews has been sitting patiently behind the emergency glass waiting for President Barack Obama to come wildly swinging the ax of panic. As recently as August, Matthews cited Obama’s careful avoidance of the network, which just last month was forced to discipline two hosts for conduct so indefensible they could not continue to represent MSNBC, as an indication of his and his colleagues’ neutrality. On Tuesday, the air raid sirens blared and the president came screaming out of the fog begging for aid. Matthews’ interview with the President of the United States will air on
Former administration officials and Democratic operatives say President Obama is ill-served by his current White House staff and must reboot his second term team following the disastrous ObamaCare rollout. First-term insiders argue the White House’s weakness was defined by a lack of preparedness, messaging blunders and failure to keep the president informed. They say Obama’s team lacks depth after the departures of longtime advisers David Axelrod, David Plouffe, Robert Gibbs and Patrick Gaspard, and suggest new people must be brought on. “You basically have [White House senior adviser Dan] Pfeiffer and [deputy chief of staff] Rob Nabors running the show politically, and
The company that earned the no-bid contract to build the failed Obamacare website also runs the Army’s disastrous Human Terrain System in Iraq and Afghanistan, which has been accused of fraud, sexual harassment and racism. The much-maligned Human Terrain System (HTS), launched in 2007, sends academics from social science fields like anthropology and linguistics into war zones to help soldiers understand the local population. The Army spent $58 million on the program in 2013, down from $114 million in 2011. CGI Federal, the U.S. arm of the Canadian CGI Group and the designer of the failed Obamacare website, attempted a
The personal information of approximately 90,000 patients of Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center, which are part of UW Medicine, has reportedly been compromised as the result of a malware attack that affected a facility computer that stored patient data. From KOMO News: Early last month, a UW Medicine employee opened an email attachment that contained malicious software. The malware took control of the computer, which happened to be storing personal information from approximately 90,000 UW Medicine and Harborview Medical Center patients, according to a UW Medicine news release. The compromised patient data included names, phone numbers, addresses, medical record
The holiday shopping season kicked off early, as several retailers began offering deals on Thanksgiving Day. Many people complained about the early start and the mad rush for deals - but they went out shopping anyway. About 15,000 were in line for Macy´s opening in New York, the retailer´s CEO said in an interview. The day after Thanksgiving, called Black Friday, is typically the biggest shopping day of the year. For a decade, it had been considered the official start of the holiday buying season. But in the past few years, retailers have pushed opening times into Thanksgiving night. They´ve
It may be the biggest Obamacare lie of all. Not that you can keep your health care plan if you like your plan. Not that you can keep your doctor if you like your doctor. Not all of the phony cost estimates and supposed efficiencies. The biggest lie of all is that 15-30 million additional people who will be enticed or shoved onto Medicaid will receive quality health care. In reality, they will receive health care “insurance,” but there will be few doctors willing to see them because the reimbursement rates are so low. I have mentioned before how, anecdotally, almost every doctor with whom I
President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
During a presentation at the White House in which President Barack Obama touted the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, the president declared that his signature health care reform law was not going to be repealed. This assertion led his administration members, his staff, and audience members to rise from their seats and give the president a standing ovation. Obama said that ACA opponents’ alternative to the health care reform law is to champion repeal and going back to the health care delivery system status quo ante. He specifically cited Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who he said was asked directly for
A woman has revealed how difficult it is to eat healthily and stay full when living off an average food stamp budget. Melinda Moulton, from Huntington, Vermont, was one of 200 people to take part in the 3Squares Challenge, which saw her living for a week on just $36 worth of food, or around $1.71 a meal. Opting to try and eat as healthily as possible, Ms Moulton resorted to cheap foods like yogurt for breakfast, two handfuls of peanuts for lunch and lentil stew for dinner, all of which left her unsatisfied.´I don´t know how people do it,´ said
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. Now, Weeks said, she has coverage through a job. "The Affordable Care Act gives young adults who are just starting
