| Barack Obama spent his first term undoing what he saw as the excesses of U.S. post-Cold War foreign policy, from land wars in the Middle East to insufficient attention to Asia. By his own account, he largely succeeded. But chances are he will spend his second term grappling with the flaws in his cure. For those who suffer through the whole article, Mssr. Diehl appears capable of some degree of objectivity.
Yet, regardless of politics, the question remains: Does any intervention, even with the best of motives, ever do us or anyone, any damn good ?
Answer: No
Bring ´em all home today.
We can exercise overwhelming power anywhere on the planet within minutes.
We do not need a huge standing army.
Holding down foreign outposts made sense in the days of sailing ships and horses.
No more.

Libya, Iran, Syria etc are already problems from hell in the first term. On the domestic front, sequestration, premature need to raise the debt limit, massive lay-offs, and the taxaggedon are the problems from hell still in the first term. Look for recall elections early in the second term.

With the New Jersey governor´s race looking like a cakewalk for Chris Christie (at least for now), and with New York´s crime problem under control (removing much of the impetus for a Republican mayor), all eyes are on the Virginia gubernatorial race as the premier political contest in 2013. Republicans selected their political slate over the weekend at a convention, settling upon Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli as their gubernatorial candidate, E.W. Jackson as their pick for lieutenant governor, and state Sen. Mark Obenshain as their choice for attorney general.

As gratifying as it was to see the “news” media actually do its job last week when the IRS scandal broke, it was also odd that the coverage focused exclusively on abuses of power relating to various Tea Party and anti-abortion groups. A much scarier IRS story has been virtually ignored by the establishment press. ONE OF THE BIGGEST questions hanging over the health-care system is how many young Americans will sign up for coverage once the Affordable Care Act begins to phase in this October. If too few buy insurance on the markets that the government is creating, insurance companies would be stuck covering primarily the the old and the sick. They would have to pay out more per customer. Their customers, in turn, would have to pay more to those companies for coverage. The stakes for the Health and Human Services Department, which is overseeing the transition, are tremendous.

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election.
