| Did General Petraeus have to resign? He opened himself as head of the Central Intelligence Agency to blackmail, which is a security breach. So the argument goes. But surely once he admitted the affair, he presumably couldn’t be blackmailed any more. And yes I know there are many facts as yet unknown, like this mystery second woman who complained about email harassment. But for now, Petraeus seems to have resigned over marital infidelity.

At some point we have to realize that there is more than an affair going on here. A relatively short term dalliance appears to have brought this man down when there were other, larger forces at work against him.
We will eventually find out who and what forces were really at work in this story. Hint: It wouldn´t be the first time that O&Co used scandal - the "politics of personal destruction" - to get rid of an opponent, one who was a threat to his goal.

He deserves nothing. He violated every code of ethics and put his own weakness against the security of the United States. I have no sympathy. Is it too much to ask that the highest ranking intelligence official not put personal crap ahead of his duty to country? He deserves what he gets. He was being blackmailed by Obama and he caved like a cheap tent and lied to Congress. I find him despicable and weak and a disgrace to his uniform. Americans are dead because of him and we have a despot as President because of him. I am outraged.

Maybe he quit so that he could testify.
Simply put, Obama would ask him to lie about Benghazi while Petraus was still at CIA.

Horsefeathers! It´s more than simply marital infidelity. He exposed his email account to his girlfriend, who then apparently accessed it for her own purposes. It is my understanding that as simply a soldier, he would have been in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. As the head of the CIA, he should have been held to at least that standard, if not higher. Ok, that takes care of my opinion on whether he should have resigned.
But, I believe General Petraeus balked at repeating the video story under oath this time. Good for him. Perhaps his very public humiliation is overcompensation, but, to paraphrase President Nixon, he "handed them them sword".

Patraeus deserves nothing but shame. A guy in his late 50s just doesn´t get up one morning and decide to cheat on his wife. He´s probably been doing this for a long time and finally got caught. The military reflects society- there is a deep, deep rot in our society.

Totally agree with #11. It´s not Petraeus´ first time, it´s just the first time he publicly got caught. No pity for anyone involved as there are much more important issues to spend my emotional energy on.

Let´s see what Petraeus says under oath about Benghazi. At that point the ins and outs of framing, blaming, backstabbing and blackmail should become --- unless I´ve missed my guess --- a little clearer.

I´m thinking he has something very incriminating to say about Benghazi and the hussein thugs/VJ got anything they could find to pressure him to lie. The affair was just a dusting to cover what really happened. This thing is far more sinsiter than just a fling or an array of flings. In deference, to the pressure and not being willing to testify against his commander, which has some complications with the COMJ so he jumped ship. Now he is no longer obligated to protect a regime that I believe he has come to despise.

I would love to believe that he is a patriot and would let his love for America trump everything else. But I can´t.
I don´t believe anyone. I suspect that he has been threatened with the loss of his life and livelihood. I also think that this would be a good use of Trump´s money to make him whole so that that would not be a factor if it would help. It must be wonderful to have so much money that you could help whomever you want!

Speculation about what Petraeas knows and what he will tell seems a dead end for the moment.
We will see what, if anything, the House committee can get from him.
Personally I think he will clam up. His lawyers can suggest many dodges. Some work, sometimes.
Dodging won´t exactly enhance his reputation. Cie la vie.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney sees Edward Snowden as a "traitor" for revealing classified information about U.S. surveillance programs and that he´s done some of the worst damage to national security in recent history. Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
