Mitch McConnell: ´We Have a
Voter Mandate Not to Raise Taxes´

Wall Street Journal, by Stephen Moore

Original Article

In the wake of President Barack Obama´s electoral victory, gleeful Democrats believe that the impending "fiscal cliff" has Republicans trapped into finally accepting higher tax rates. But as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sits for an interview in his Capitol office 48 hours after the election, one thing is certain: He is in no way chastened by Tuesday´s results. If Mr. Obama wants fiscal hand-to-hand combat, he will get it. "Let me put it very clearly," says the five-term Republican senator from Kentucky. "I am not willing to raise taxes to turn off the sequester. Period."

Shut up Mitch. You´re nothing but a company town stooge. Republicans will cave, claim victory and keep reaping the spoils of DC.

He still has enough members to hold things up, which is why Reid is changing the rules.

Given the disaterious senate election results, I would submit the only mandate is for McConnell to step down as minority leader.

No matter how you huff and puff, McConnell will be the GOP´s leader during this upcoming spectacle. What he said was exactly what we need to hear. Support him as long as he stays on this track.

What poster 1 said. Shut up, mitch. The GOP leadership is feckless. My biggest concern is the coming GOP cave on amnesty. Earth to GOP, amnesty wont´t get one vote for Republicans. The opposite is true, as demoralized conservatives won´t bother to vote because mobs of illegals will wield overwhelming political power.

The reason we lost the senate was not the "establishment" republicans. McConnell is right. Support him as long as he holds.

McConnell is saying the right stuff, Boehner needs to be saying the same. If the people wanted higher taxes and more spending they would have put the Dems back in charge of the House.

#7 I really believe that the people who voted for Obama have no idea what the House of Representatives does or what is it´s responsibility so they didn´t care about them. Our school system has completely failed us in helping our young people, unmarried women and minorities understand the separation of powers. They think the President and the Senate are the most important. Guess what? Their ignorance is our salvation because the House controls the purse strings and Republicans and Conservatives are now controlling the House. If we go over the fiscal cliff, so be it. Maybe these young people will learn very quickly that these elections are not popularity contests and Mr. Obama who is the cooler, hipper candidate will not help them when their looking for a job or losing their present one. And also, the most important lesson is that elections do have consequences, sometimes tragic ones for their own lives.

Reply 11 - Posted by: bhkat, 11/10/2012 11:09:39 AM     (No. 9005104)

Remember that McConnell, despite being able to not do anything to stop the Obamacare law due to lack of votes, showed leadership by holding all the repubs in line.

Reply 12 - Posted by: geneinnyc, 11/10/2012 11:24:00 AM     (No. 9005137)

McConnell didn´t cave before. Why would he now? He´s doing what he can in the Senate minority. It´s really Boehner and the House who hold the big stick and I see no evidence of them caving, either, at least not on taxes.

I do worry about immigration, however.

Boehner and McConnell -- two big talkers. Sure would be nice to see them walk the walk for once, and now would be a good time.

He is right. Look at the electoral map, there is no mandate for Obama, look at the House of Representatives and see how people really voted. A few big cities determined the election but it is the districts that really tell the story.

They have a mandate from their voters to stop any amnesty and to refuse to raise the debt ceiling, though the heavens fall.

Let me help you, Mitch..
1. Fire Reinse.
2. Hire someone who can recruit palatable winners for Senate and House elections
3. Obstruct, obstruct, obstruct any and all efforts by Dems to grant amnesty or otherwise effectuate a structural shift in the electorate
4. To counter charges of obstructionism, vote "present" ala Dear Leader on all economic issues thereby allowing The Democrat Party with enough rope to hang themselves, politically speaking, on the economy. Let them soak the rich and own the reprocussions. Let them cause their donor base to dry up prior to the 2014 midterms when melanin will not be on the ballot and our voters will be out in droves as was the case in 2010.
5. Resign your post immediately and let someone charismatic, ie Rubio or Rand Paul lead minority opposition.
6. Hope this helps.

Amen #10. Not only do the Obama supporters not know what the House does, they don´t seem to know how often they are elected and that they are only one half of Congress. Had to school a couple of Obama supporters at work the other day. Thankfully, these two idiots probably won´t vote in the mid-term elections because they won´t realize that such a thing exists.

Why in world can´t the Republican Party do better than having this old dour and humorless sourpuss as the face of the Senate?

Hey Sourpuss, I hate to say it, but you have a mandate for nothing. Obama won, and the Republicans lost two senate seats. Fight the good fight, but stop using the word mandate.

Reply 21 - Posted by: saguni, 11/10/2012 4:16:33 PM     (No. 9005671)

Why can´t the Republicans, somewhere in this whole entire country, find one honest person with a voice willing to bring out some inconvenient facts about taxes:

Since income taxes were invented, every time tax rates go up, tax revenues go down; every time tax rates go down, tax revenues go up. It has happened time and again, most notably with Kennedy and Reagan.

And, somewhere out there is a clip of 0bama admitting he knows this is a fact, but he wants to raise taxes "on the rich" for fairness to the poor!

Most of the public, especially the 47%, are to ignorant of economics to understand these facts.

Hey Mitch, don´t you get it yet? The Republicans are the punching bag, the scapegoat. All most low information voters know is, RICH people have more money than ever and you are protecting their tax ´breaks.´ Those voters have no idea where most Federal dollars come from, perhaps Obama´s ´stash.´ You have a madman in the White House, he simply isn´t playing by your rules. You are going to have to go outside the box on this one and it isn´t that hard. Every year someone releases a Grace Report of government waste. Coburn has a long list, use it. Offer to increase top rates some percentage tied to cutting the absurdities of the Coburn examples. Then UP the ante and offer a cut to CONGRESS and the White House´s operating budgets. Some things are easy.

President Obama delivered an address today at the National Defense University called “The Future of our Fight Against Terrorism.” Actually, part of the speech was about the past, including much self-congratulation and some shots at President Bush. This part of the speech is revisionist rubbish. As Max Boot explains: Obama said, for example, that after he came into office, “we unequivocally banned torture, affirmed our commitment to civilian courts, worked to align our policies with the rule of law, and expanded our consultations with Congress.” Umm, actually all of that happened in Bush’s second term.

In seventy lugubrious paragraphs, President Obama today asked America whether as commander-in-chief he should bomb terrorists. He concluded that sometimes he should, and sometimes he shouldn’t. He couldn’t quite make up his mind. Therefore, he would appoint a panel to advise him. Mr. Obama has already authorized more than 200 such drone bombings. His staff has bragged that before ordering a bombing, he personally reviews who lives and who dies. Imagine if Prime Minister Churchill or President Truman had appeared on television to announce an advisory panel before bombing our enemy. We would be appalled

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- The Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River collapsed Thursday evening, injuring an unknown number of people. Both the northbound and southbound portions of the bridge dropped into the river sometime before 7 p.m., according to Washington State Patrol trooper Mark Francis. Francis said several cars were on the bridge when it collapsed, and some are now in the water. Bart Treece with the Washington State Department of Transportation was unsure when the bridge was last inspected. "All of our bridges in the area are pretty old," he said.

Fox News chief Roger Ailes has sent a memo to his subordinates at the leading cable news network. He sent this memo to his staff today in connection with the federal investigation into an alleged leak to Fox News reporter James Rosen, a story that the Washington Post’s Ann E. Marimow broke earlier this week. The memo’s a masterpiece, too. For all those who wonder what it is about Ailes that endears his people to him — and that makes him such a good interviewee for any media reporter lucky enough to get an audience

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

LONDON — British police late Thursday arrested a man and a woman in connection with the butchering of a British soldier on a London street, as anti-Muslim protests sprang up across the country. The arrests fueled speculation that the gruesome knife attack Wednesday — the first successful terrorist act in Britain since 2005 — was part of a wider plot, and prompted questions about the prevalence of Islamic extremism in the country and how to combat it. British officials moved quickly to increase security in London and other major cities Thursday as police raided

Three days of hearings have shown that IRS scrutiny of conservative organizations extended beyond a few rogue employees in Cincinnati, that the agency staged its announcement of the bad news to try to limit the damage, and that the White House knew more, and knew it earlier, than it first admitted. Republicans argue that they also uncovered evidence that the auditor’s report could have been completed months ago — even before the November elections. They also said an internal IRS investigation confirmed the untoward behavior as early as July 2012.

Former Rep. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
