| David Petraeus’s resignation marks the end of one of the great postwar military and government careers — his successful surge in Iraq being analogous to and as impressive as Matthew Ridgway’s salvation of Korea or Sherman’s sudden taking of Atlanta that saved Lincoln’s and the Union cause before the 1864 elections. I must disagree with Dr. VDH, who I´m sure knows a million times more history than I do.
Yet he completely misreads Petraeus´ actions in Iraq and since. Petraeus was merely competent in Iraq, a big improvement but not worth hagiography. The Sunni awakening was the real change, and Petraeus lucked into it. And Petraeus´ Afghanistan record is mediocre at best.
And then Benghazi.
And now this.
Wake up VDH.

Re: the truth was always that he sought to serve his country regardless of politics.
VDH is overlooking Petraeus´ misleading testimony to Congress on 9/13/12, when he stated that a demonstration sparked by the obscure video caused the attack. The day before, the FBI and a national security agency testified that it was an organized terror attack with no mention of a demonstration. Petraeus apparently lied so that Obama, Rice and Clinton could lie. Once Obama won, Petraeus was dumped.

...I would like to know as well, why WAS the FBI involved. Had someone perhaps been using them to do some opposition research on a possible foe? Would put nothing beyond the current administration...
...by all means, Petraeus made some bad choices as a husband. Washington is full of them but this has beeb laid out so publicly by the manner he used. Makes me wonder...

I´d be interested to know what bonafides #1 brings to their harsh criticism of Victor Davis Hanson. Without them it just sounds arrogant.
Dr. Hanson is a military historian and analyst without peer.
So....
While we´re waiting, a read of this essay is a worthwhile expenditure of time and effort.

One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point.
