Puerto Rico approves statehood
Washington Post, by Caitlin Dewey

Original Article

Posted By:supersid, 11/8/2012 8:10:12 AM

A slim majority of Puerto Ricans voted Tuesday to approve a nonbinding referendum that would make the island the 51st U.S. state. The measure requires final approval from Congress, so it means little for Puerto Rico right now. Still, nearly 54 percent of Puerto Ricans voted for a change in the U.S. commonwealth’s relationship with the United States — and President Obama promised to uphold their vote in the case of a “clear majority.”

Comments:
Long way to go still. Imagine Puerto Rico getting 2 US Senators. Chances are they will have (D) after their name.

I am guessing that they already get plenty of the 'low income' perks that the mainlanders enjoy so maybe that won't cost us more. However, OP is correct. That's a guaranteed two more left-wing Democrat senators.

This is a chance for the Republicans to capture the Latino vote. Champion statehood for Puerto Rico and make gains into he Latino electorate.

My P.R. graduate students, during my teaching days, told me that P.R. residents are not subject to the federal income tax system.
Give them statehood, and they would be.
In addition, 30% of its residents work for the Puerto Rican central government.
Finally, they did have revolutionaries in P.R., who in the early 1950s, shot up the floor of the House of Representatives in D.C., and tried to assassinate President Truman. They called themselves separatists.
Bill Clinton pardoned some of them, for the sake of HIllary's run for the senate from NY.
P.R. statehood would probably bring back the revolutionaries. Che style.

Permanent Democrat majority is what they want, but at the cost of forcing PR to pay taxes. It will no longer be the land of freebies and giveaways.

Having grown up in Trenton NJ, I have been around lots of Peurto Ricans.
If I were to comment on their proclivity towards sloth, envy, gov't dependency and defrauding same in proper terms, I'd be banned.
#2, you still misunderstand the shift in our Country. The PR's I grew up around DO NOT WANT FREEDOM, they like cocktails, late waking hours and to sexually assault young girls.

I think I'll wait to buy my new flag. They'll be adding the hammer and sickle to it in a few years anyway, might as well hold out until then.

Well I've been awaiting announcment of the new national flag for the USSA. Having another state will be just the ticket to issue one.

No doubt with that extra star the blue field will be determined to be just too full, so they will probably replace it with a nice pic of Dear Reader. Hooray.

I was there a few years ago #9 and you are right. People who haven't visited PR have no idea what an open trash dump it is. The resorts keep their properties clean but the public areas are horrible. The public beaches were paved with cans and trash. You almost couldn't see the sand for the trash.

Ignore PR's travel ads and don't go there or you will be sorry.

Most of PR doesn't want independence #16. Maybe a few wealthy natives and a handful of the usual activists. The majority are teat-sucking drones who know whether the gravy is coming from.

Just what the USA needs, a new State where 118% of the people are on some sort of welfare, where most do not speak English, that is sure to generate two additional liberal Democrat US Senators and several more liberal Democrat representatives.

Reply 20 - Posted by: MsMontana, 11/8/2012 12:50:16 PM     (No. 8999812)

What's in it for the rest of us to allow PR to be a state?

Sorry, but I see no advantage to the present 50 states to allow PR to join our union.

In fact, I say, no statehood and a complete withdrawal of American funds from the island.

What the hell are they going to do? Attack us militarily? They have nothing we need.....zip.

Reply 21 - Posted by: shepsmum, 11/8/2012 1:13:19 PM     (No. 8999859)

This is amazing. I lived in PR for a year -- and advocated that they should either be a state or independent because the commonwealth status helped no one and created both dependency and resentment.

There is a very long path to statehood, and I don't see it happening.

That said, the governor is a Republican and is doing a very hard job of reform. He has downsized the government payroll and done quite a bit to reform the "system". He spoke at the R national convention -- worth looking him up (Luis Fortuno).

Reply 22 - Posted by: ColonialAmerican1623, 11/8/2012 11:47:45 PM     (No. 9001344)

That should cause some whining. Any numbers on how many have been living and working in the states for years and getting the taxes taken out of their checks and returned at the end of the year ?

One complained that when he and the babies momma moved here, they didn't receive a free apartment anymore, but she still had Medicaid for her and kids.

Renowned author Dan Brown woke up in his luxurious four-poster bed in his expensive $10 million house – and immediately he felt angry. For some reason they found something funny in sentences such as “His eyes went white, like a shark about to attack.”

Mark Sanford has won the South Carolina special election in a competitive race for what in normal circumstances is a safe Republican seat. The former governor beat Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert Busch, for the state’s 1st congressional district. The AP called the race for Sanford early in the evening, with the Republican leading Colbert Busch 54 percent 46 percent.

Most countries in the world have irrelevant numbers of "immigrants." In the Americas, for example, only Canada, America, and the British West Indies have significant non-native populations. In Mexico, immigrants account for 0.6 percent of the population, and that generally negligible level prevails all the way down through Latin America until you hit a blip of 1.4 percent with Chile and 3.8 percent in Argentina. (Snip) But profound sweeping demographic transformation through immigration is a phenomenon only of the western world in the modern era, and even there America leads the way.

Shortly after Barack Obama finished his press conference after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s dramatic apprehension last night, a Russian newspaper reported that the president did not mention the “Russian footprint” in his address. (Snip) “Putin has repeatedly said there is no such thing as our terrorists and somebody else’s,” Peskov said. “One must not differentiate between them, deal with some and condemn others. They all deserve the same approach, the same rejection.” This was a reference to America’s vocal defense of the Chechen separatists in the 1990s

As is now traditional in these stories, we’re now being told that the Brothers Tsarnaev are merely the latest card-carrying members of Local 473 of the Amalgamated Union of Lone Wolves. No broader pattern can be discerned, or should be discerned. All jihad is local. Mahatma Gandhi is quoted in his book, Gandhi: The Power of Pacifism, by Catherine Clement, as follows: While Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsees and Jews, along with several million adherents of an animistic religion, all coexisted in relative harmony, one religion that would not accept compromise stood out from the rest: Islam. Gandhi was referring to the experience during his lifetime in the Indian sub-continent, but the growth of Wahhabism and the current resurgence in Islamic triumphalism since Gandhi´s death in January 1948 now poses an increasingly existential threat to the West,

Washington rumor has it that Obama wants to be U.N. Secretary General. There are several reasons that make that likely, and if it´s true, it throws new light on a lot of Obama´s oddities -- including his Royalty Bows, his Apology Tours, his Muslim Sellout, and the Benghazi Cover-Up. But first -- why would Obama be planning to become the chief of the U.N. before he has even finished his second term?

On Wednesday, Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a man who had served Queen and country honorably in the hell of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, emerged from his barracks on Wellington Street, named after the Duke thereof, in southeast London. Minutes later, he was hacked to death in broad daylight and in full view of onlookers by two men with machetes who crowed "Allahu Akbar!" as they dumped his carcass in the middle of the street like so much roadkill. As grotesque as this act of savagery was, the aftermath was even more unsettling

Abuse Of Power: Any scandal investigation that expects a "Eureka!" moment, a White House e-mail, or Oval Office smoking gun will be misguided. In fact, the dots are already connected directly to the president. Barack Obama is not foolish enough to have a tape recording system hidden in his desk. And his administration staff are not careless enough to send one another incriminating e-mails. If the president was behind the IRS unlawfully harassing conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, we can be sure the communications were all sotto voce and in persona, like any good Chicago political operator.

A Washington state Democrat is accusing Republicans of “throwing American infrastructure … under the bus” after a bridge collapse there this week. The portion of Interstate 5 in Washington that runs over the Skagit River collapsed on Thursday after a truck hit an overhead support structure, but Rep.
