| New York City looks like the set of a disaster movie this morning after a night of being battered by Superstorm Sandy. It hit the mainland at 6.30pm local time last night having laid waste to large parts of the coast during the day. The US city shut its mass transit system, schools, the stock exchange and Broadway, and ordered hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to leave home to get out of the way as Sandy zeroed in. A 13ft wall of water caused by the storm surge and high tides resulted in severe flooding to subways and road tunnels. Torrents of water poured into building works at Ground Zero,

As if I didn't already deeply respect you and the ldot staff for all that you do, that respect has grown by seeing you and your staff in action during the "storm of a lifetime".
Many prayers from the Gulf Coast to those suffering from Sandy - for safety, for peace of mind, and for the quick return to some sense of "normality" in the coming days.

The most powerful city in the most powerful nation in the world, brought to a standstill, powerless. Certainly a message and many life lessons there. Among them, that civilization, comfort, safety are a thin veneer indeed. And that our ability to emerge from disasters, both natural and man-caused, and survive as a great nation will depend on our common resolve and our re-commitment to what unites us. It's a very big reminder that we need to re-discover the "E Pluribus Unum-ness" that we've lost somewhere along the way. And also, that we need to select leaders who still believe in that motto.
Our prayers and our willingness to roll up our sleeves to help are with you out there in the path of the storm.

My prayers for all - my daughter and other friends live near Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park NY. She has a generator and heard she and her huband are getting along okay. God be with you all.

There wasn't much sleep in the house last night as the winds howled and the branches flew. The last tree on the property is now bereft of leaves. I can't imagine a dark and spooky Manhattan.
Mother Nature can be cruel but I have faith that God will see those folks through this and the entire country's prayers last night has lifted you up.

#9. The tidal surge only needs to go far enough inland to reach all the tunnels under Manhattan to create real pain. Recall the invisible om the streets flood that shut down the Chicago Loop after a dredge in the river poked a hole in the roof of an old tunnel. Most of the buildings lost power and communications when the water spread throughout the entire area shorting out all the wire and transformers housed underground.

Having survived hurricane Katrina here in Biloxi, I send all my prayers to those who have been hit by Sandy, and pray for a quick recovery. But, even after 7yrs, the majority of ocean front property between Boloxi and Gulfport is still empty and for sale. Seems no one wants ocean front property anymore. Will New York and New Jersey be the same?

I used to live in Manhatten and was there for both blackouts in the 60's and 70's. Looked a lot like it does today but without the water. Has the looting begun yet?

Wow... Count on the Brits (Daily Mail) to have the most amazing and extensive pictures of what's going on in the NorthEast/NYC. Kudos to them.
And, at the end of the article, there's a
Transit Tracker: 'The latest info on transportation outages around New York and New Jersey, updated by WNYC.'
It shows you in real time how/when/if the roads/bridges/trains/subways/airports/etc. will be up and running. It puts a real-time picture on just how horrible the storm damage was.

FYI. The photo at the Tomb of the Unknown on the homepage today, although not photoshopped, was taken during a rainstorm sometime last month, not during Sandy.

Watched the growing disaster on TV until about one in the morning. Unbelievable. Battery Park under water, yet, not to mention the tube from Jersey, and the subways. Like a bad disaster movie.

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
