Texas authorities have threatened to arrest international election observers, prompting a furious response from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). “The threat of criminal sanctions against [international] observers is unacceptable,” Janez Lenarčič, the Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), said in a statement. “The United States, like all countries in the OSCE, has an obligation to invite ODIHR observers to observe its elections.”(Snip) Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott further fueled the controversy on Tuesday when he sent a letter to the OSCE warning the organization that

Note to the socialist UN observers:

You boys aren't dealing with the Obama administration when you cross the state line. These are real Americans, and they don't have a fondness for the UN. Bottom line--don't mess with Texas.

Hey OSCE... The Republic of Texas does not recognize your alleged authority to monitor our elections, nor does our State Department have any authority to allow you to monitor our elections.

Texas is not some eighth century, third-world country, and we will not be treated as such.

They can play by our rules, or get to know Bubba in the county slammer for a few days. Their choice.

No, Julian, Texas didn't "spark" this - the OSCE did.

But if it's a fight they want, I've little doubt that Texans will be happy to oblige.

A little confusing. The UN entity, OSCE, itself says it does not observe when and where state laws forbid such activity. And a number of US states do forbid it.

But the AG in Texas did not speak nicely. What a ruffian! (I thought it was too blunt and would trigger a big fight. And it has.)

In response the OSCE predictably switched into UN WeaselImperial Mode and now implies it can do as they wish with protection from Washington and a treaty.

In reality the UN and Washington think states have no rights whatever. We see that in hundreds of incidents each year.

DOJ will probably send agents to protect the UN people from the Texas police.

If you show up you will be invited to go back to where you came from. We don't need or want any of you in Texas. Better to get that straight before you head our way.

Why you! Jake shouted as he knocked Slim to the ground.

Slim lay in the dirt rubbin' his jaw and said, "Jake, what'd you hit me fer? All I said was the President's raisin' taxes."

Jake reached down and helped Slim to his feet and was apologetically dusted Slim off and said, "Pardner, I sure am sorry. I though you said he was raised in Texas."

California’s unemployment rate is rotten and holding steady. In March, according to the Los Angeles Times, the rate was 8.1%. In February, it was exactly the same. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the state only added 11,800 net new jobs in March, many of them in construction, government, education, and health services. The greatest gains were in professional and business services, with 3,100 new positions. But the jobs numbers in hospitality, manufacturing, and leisure dipped, and the biggest drop came in financial activities, as the slowing rate of mortgages forced banks to fire employees. Democrats have a problem and everyone knows it. President Obama calls it a “congenital disease.” If they can’t control it, Obama could spend the final years of his presidency battling not only a Republican House but also a Republican Senate. Democrats don’t vote in midterm elections. That’s an exaggeration, of course, but the core of the Democratic coalition is made up of many people who turn out to vote only in presidential elections. The Republican coalition — older and whiter — suffers less from midterm falloff. So much has been made of the building blocks the president assembled to win his

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls.
