| Public-opinion polls are lagging indicators in politics. By the time a shift in the trend becomes clear from poll data, the causes of the shift are days or weeks in the past. It is therefore unwise to extrapolate the current trend forward or to begin thinking of polls as supernatural prophecies that predict future events. With all those caveats in mind, however, Mitt Romney enters the final two weeks of the presidential campaign looking very much like the next president of the United States, and it is not merely poll data that creates this impression.

The author attributes Romney's gains to debate 1 and Bengazi....I truly believe that it was debate 1 where the nation met an un-media-filtered Mitt contrasted with a non-media-hyped Obama.

The Boston Marathon terrorist attack allegedly hatched by two brothers from Chechnya is threatening to disrupt President Obama’s second-term agenda. Opponents of immigration reform — the most promising priority of Obama’s second term remaining after the defeat of gun control — are already using the attack to try to slow progress on a bipartisan Senate bill. More broadly, the attack is raising questions about how the administration should deal with 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was captured Friday after an exhaustive manhunt in Boston, and concerns over whether the FBI was

Ted Cruz has made quite an impression in just three months in the Senate. Like Marco Rubio, he is the son of a Cuban exile. He is a extraordinarily talented guy. Unlike Barack Obama, he had a stellar record both in academia and in the practice of law: he was national debating champion, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, clerked for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was named by American Lawyer magazine as one of the 50 Best Litigators under 45 in America, served as Solicitor General of the State of Texas

Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) was not impressed with Sen. Max Baucus´s (D-Mont.) criticism of how the Obama administration has implemented its signature healthcare law. Baucus said Wednesday that he fears the implementation will be a "huge train wreck" because people do not understand what the reform law does. If it´s a train wreck, Pompeo said, Baucus has no one to blame but himself. "No one in the country bears more responsibility for the complexity of this law than you," Pompeo wrote in a letter to Baucus on Thursday.

When Senator Dianne Feinstein recently spoke to a San Francisco crowd, she accused the “gun lobby” of being responsible for stripping her gun ban from pending gun-control legislation: The National Rifle Association and gun manufacturers are to blame for the “disconnect” between the broad public support for gun control and the reluctance in Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein said Wednesday. Feinstein claimed the “NRA has intimidated senators with threats that the gun lobby would spend heavily to unseat them if they support” her gun ban.

The debate in Washington on immigration reform has had no political impact, but the debate is having a major impact on south Texas, 1200 WOAI news reports. Officials say the number of people entering the U.S. illegally is way up and, tragically, (snip) "The Border Patrol agent was loading one man up, and he told the officer in Spanish, ´Obama´s gonna let me go´." Border Patrol agents report that immigrants are crossing the border, and in some cases surrendering while asking, “Where do I go for my amnesty?”

In a letter dated March 22–but not disclosed until now–Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly urged Sen. Marco Rubio to leave the so-called “Gang of 8? senators drafting an immigration amnesty bill. Schlafly’s letter cited Ronald Reagan’s experience with the 1986 amnesty, which was followed by a wave of illegal immigration resulting in the approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants for whom another amnesty is now being considered. (“Reagan later admitted he regretted signing the bill and that it was a huge mistake.”) Schalfly’s letter, a copy of which was obtained by kausfiles, continues, in part:

Google should google it: Cesar Chavez’s legacy on illegal immigration may not be what Google thinks it is. Here’s a Ruben Navarrette column on the subject. As a labor leader, Chavez realized that uncontrolled immigration undercut his workers’ bargaining position–as late as 1979 he inveighed against “illegal alien strikebreakers” before Congress.. Some of his tactics were even less than Gandhiesque … P.S.: Of course, he changed his position in later years “under pressure from Chicano yaktivists.” That doesn’t mean his later position was right (or wrong).

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose
