In today's highly polarized political environment it is somewhat surprising to find voters who backed John McCain in 2008 and now support President Barack Obama, but they exist. Roughly 5 percent of respondents in Reuters/Ipsos polls said they chose the Republican contender in 2008 and will switch to Obama in 2012. This number peaked at around 9 percent two separate times over the summer, according to data collected since January. Who are these defectors? Jeff Waltrip, 56, is a retired electrician and retail worker who has voted Republican all his life. But in his view Obama
Comments: Riiiight. Sounds like the ''Republicans'' who call into C-Span. They say they have vote 'R' for decades, but then spew-out all the Democrat talking points.
Here comes the desperation crapola from the usual sources for the final push. I wouldn't be surprised if the authors of these pieces of stuff are names from the former Journolist exposed by Breitbart. I've already found at least one Reuters writer who was on that list: Felix Salmon.. Where there's one there are apt to be others.
I got a polling call the other day. It was automated. At the end of it, their information would tell them that they had just polled an African American male, age 18-24, a Muslim, who voted for McCain in 08 and was voting for Romney this time.
I wanted their data to look a bit more interesting. Why should the poll takers be bored, was my generous thought.
Can you imagine the resources Reuters must have burned to find even one person switching to Obama in 2012. A good strategy for them would have been to hang out around psychiatrist offices, as no sane person could possibly now be supporting Obama for the first time.
It seems so obvious that the people that this article is referring to have been brainwashed by the alphabet networks. There's no way they could have some of these views if they had simply paid attention and/or done their homework.
I am an older white male (age 71). I voted for McCain in '08 and I would crawl a mile over broken glass to vote for Romney this time. 'We' think Obama is more truthful???? You can tell when he is lying: his lips are moving.
These old white men must not give a rats a** about their children who are probably in their 40's and struggling to make ends meet. They also must not care for their little brat grandchildren who will be tax slaves if they ever do find work. Who are these morons reaching across the isle to their friends ?
What a steaming bunch of crappola and leftist propaganda, but am repeating myself. I'm an older White male with a lot of older White male friends. Most of us held our nose and voted for McCain because no matter how uninspiring McCain was, the alternative with Obama the Marxist was sooooo much worse. No comparison - Not even close! If anything the Obamboozler has lost voters from every demographic since 2008 and four years of nothing but policies that have made our situation only worse. If you voted for the Obamboozler in 2008 you got suckered. If you vote for the Benghazi Bullshirter in 2012, yer just plain stupid.
Since HW Bush was mentioned in the article and here, lets not forget he was no friend of gun owners. As a senator he voted for the 1968 gun control act. As president he "temporarily" outlawed the importation of any gun worth owning, then made it permanent when nobody was looking. He frequently used magazine capacity as a bargaining chip with congress. Plus, the "jack booted thugs" from the ATF we all remember so well operated with impunity during his time in office. Not a big difference between him and BJ from what I can see.
I must congratulate you on your search for the political unicorn, i.e. a McCain voter switching to Obama. You may have had to reach out to the suburbs of Marshall, MI (which is itself not even a suburb of anywhere) , but you did it. I hope this is of some comfort to you when your guy loses 45 states on November 6.
Ok Mr. Waltrip. Yuck yuck. Romney`s going to screw thing s up by lowering taxes an opening up domestic oil drilling and the Keystone Pipeline. That`ll wreck the vibrant economy we are experiencing at the moment.
Sorry, but all the people they mention, are under 60 and retired. Now we know that retirement age is above 65, unless you are a government worker. So, to claim that those people where supporting McCain in 2008 is unbelievable to me.
That's the reason Zero is begging Jeremiah Wright to help with a last minute push. Jeremiah has so much influence with older white males. If you believe that you're dumber than I think you are - and ----- that's dumb!!!!-
I love telephone pollsters, they believe anything you tell them. I am 70 and each time they call I state my age as between 25 and 80. I always tell them Obama is our hero and everyone in the house plans to vote for him. The idiots keep calling. have voted republican since I was 21. Would not vote for a democrat if they held a gun to my head.
FTA: "...The McCain-to-Obama switchers are 55 percent male, and 34 percent of them are 55 or older. (Overall, Obama trails Romney 34 percent to 52 percent among white men over 50.) About 72 percent of them are white."
Roughly, only half are male and only a third are over age 55. Article says 72 percent are white. Does that mean that the remaining 28% are people of color who voted for the white guy over the black messiah? I find that hard to believe. In fact the whole article defies reality.
FTA: The defectors to Obama remain a smaller subset of respondents than those who voted for him in 2008 and now support Romney. The Reuters/Ipsos polling shows 10 percent of voters plan to cross the aisle in that direction. This after the obligatory Mormon knock.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The victim of a vicious knockout attack in New Jersey is speaking out for the first time. He was cold-cocked, and hit not just with a fist, but with a glove with hard plastic knuckles. Two of the four attackers are still on the run. "All of a sudden, I was trying to watch my back and these two came around front and punches my face," the victim said. The 36-year-old restaurant worker does not want his name or face on television, and who could blame him? He still has headaches from a concussion and six
Sears stock plummeted Wednesday as news came out that Edward Lampert, its stubborn billionaire chairman and CEO, had to surrender majority control of the 120-year-old big box retailer when investors in Lampert’s hedge fund pulled money out. With no end in sight for Lampert’s quixotic turnaround efforts, it’s time to question whether there’s any way to save Sears as long as he remains in charge. (Snip) Lampert began at Sears with the ill-fated $12 billion merger with Kmart in 2005. Sales have declined for 27 straight quarters and the company’s stock is down over 70% from its high in 2007.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has no system in place to prevent fraud when individuals apply for tax credits under Obamacare, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). The IG said in an audit released Tuesday that the IRS has no plan to manage, monitor, or mitigate fraud risk when processing premium tax credits available under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “The ACA Program has not yet completed a fraud mitigation strategy,” the audit found. “It is important for the IRS to thoroughly consider fraud threats and risks that could impact new ACA systems.” Politico reports: The
Around 100,000 Americans successfully signed up for health insurance in November through the troubled federal online marketplace, HealthCare.gov, a person familiar with the preliminary data confirmed to ABC News. The figure reflects a surge in enrollment as software and hardware fixes to the site were made over the course of the month. In October, only 26,000 people could successfully enroll in Obamacare plans, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. "We´ve been working 24/7 to make improvements, and more consumers are successfully shopping online and enrolling in a health plan each week," Health and Human Services Secretary
NEW HAVEN >> The jail cell death last weekend of Yale University professor Samuel See, known as a brilliant writer and rising star in academia, has shaken up the tight-knit college community. Now adding to the mystery of his unexpected death are apparent connections between the online profiles of See and several escort service websites that include a cache of sexually explicit photos. At least four websites advertising male escort services included a phone number connected to See. The website Ryan Cochran Escort Services includes the same phone number listed on an order of protection filed against See in September.
For many Ann Arborites, Thanksgiving is a day devoted to giving thanks, spending time with family, eating turkey and watching the Detroit Lions. This year, retail giants want that to change. (Snip) The early openings change the game for retail giants looking to boost profits through aggressive holiday sales. It also means millions of retail employees in the U.S. are working on the holiday, and it poses the question to consumers: Is a bargain on a 70-inch television or an Apple iPad worth ditching Thanksgiving dinner? “You couldn’t pay me to stand in a line in the cold on Thanksgiving
Macy´s Inc and a slew of other U.S. retailers are opening on Thanksgiving for the first time ever in a bare-knuckled brawl for a bigger slice of overall holiday sales. But it might not be so easy to lure most Americans from their turkey and football - particularly if the weather is foul. Department store rivals Kohl´s Corp and J.C. Penney Co Inc led a string of Thanksgiving opening announcements after Macy´s said it would open its U.S. stores on the popular holiday, ending a 155-year tradition. Sales trends, survey results and an online "Save Thanksgiving" backlash suggest that shoppers
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
