| One of my favorite movies of all time is Frank Capra's “It's A Wonderful Life,” starring Jimmy Stewart. (Snip) Like FDR, Obama has walked us back from the brink. He averted a depression, ended one war and put us on the path ending the other, rescued the auto industry, slowly building the sound footing necessary to have a sustained recovery — better, smarter regulation of those that brought this upon us, tax breaks to save a dwindling middle class,

Comments: LCom Staff, sorry about the early (Snip) but Burns is too verbose.
Barf alert! Read this to see how the liberal/progressive mind works. The factual errors in this opinion piece show that Burns is no historian.

Mr. Burns, are you aware that one of your favorite movies of all time "It's a Wonderful Life" is perhaps one of the most poignant and clear measures on why we should all be pro-life? Tell me how Obama would feel about destroying the life of George Bailey if George's mother wanted an abortion.

I love how libs say that it wasn't possible because the Conservatives wouldn't work across the aisle. Obama had the house and senate majority for two years.... they sure didn't work across the aisle when they rammed Obamacare down our throats. Obama shoulda, woulda, coulda but he didn't!
He failed all of us and he doesn't deserve another term.

What a poor, weak argument for voting for Obama.
The fact that Mr. Burns never held a private sector job (or not in decades) has polluted his thought processes.
And while Mr. Burns is for government support of PBS all of his projects are underwritten by one of the world's largest oil companies; what a hypocrite.

"As a student of American history..."
Burns' Civil War doc got appropriate attention and, of course, race was an overriding element. Everything he's done since is tunnel-visioned race driven/leftist sop.
This endorsement is in keeping and, yes, as noted above, grow up, Ken.

In that movie, the Bailey Savings and Loan helped keep the town afloat and allowed the citizens to purchase/maintain their homes and businesses. When there was a run on the banks, it wasn't Government Man who came in with a wad of cash, it was one of their own - George Bailey. And the people didn't line up and demand their "fair share", they requested just enough to keep them afloat. There is an overt thread of personal responsibility that runs through this movie especially seen in the character of George Bailey. To compare our president to this character indicates to me that Mr. Burns has not really watched this movie.

Delusional piece that regurgitates BO's talking points without any variance. BO saved us from a depression? He saved the auto industry? Give me a break. And poor BO has been blocked by nasty Republicans? Except for the first two years when dems had full control of the government and fixed .....NOTHING.
It's no surprise that Burns cites FDR, a liberal hero, who's policies have been proven to actually have deepened and prolonged the depression.
Yup, you are right Ken. BO is acting like FDR ... and getting similar results, deepening and prolonging the recession. And like FDR, BO is attacking and demonizing business, which is the ONLY real vehicle to get us out of the economic mess. It took a world war to pull out of the FDR's depression. Hopefully we can fix our current problems simply by getting rid of the cause in a couple weeks.
Thanks for the confirmation that liberals are programmed robots Ken. I'm pretty sure that most New Hampshire citizens are not.

Burns made what may be the best documentary of all time - "The Civil War." He's been living off those accolades and trying unsuccesfully to repeat that success ever since. I wonder where he would be without his CPB grants - probably teaching at Pottersville High. I'm betting that's really why he's supporting Soetoro - to keep those grants a'coming.

Dang those Republicans--they wouldn't let Little Barry fix things. But oh wait--LB had a majority of Democrats in the House and Senate when he was elected. Why didn't he fix things then? And there was also the pesky problem of those voters who took away his majority in the House in 2010. If it wasn't for them, we would all be on Easy Street!

What tax breaks? The Income Tax rates and deductions are the same as when Bush was president. Also, we are still in Iraq, have more dead in Afghanistan then in the Iraq war, we have 30% m ore people getting food stamps, we are in a depression and we are $6 trillion in more debt. Ken Burns must be living in an alternate universe.

An example of what we see so often with those talented individuals producing entertainment; talent does not produce intelligence or the ability to discern logic. I wonder why these elite media stars so enamored with government and confident of their knowledge don't offer medical advice. There is no shortage of blockheads ready to turn over the leadership of government to some nut who can play a convincing role in a movie. Maybe they wish to trust their medical care to them as well.

# 17 is correct. The movie, my all time favorite, deals with self sacrifice and consistently doing the right thing even when it is not what you want to do.
George Bailey is given the opportunity to see what the world would be without his kind, generous, self-sacrificing presence in it. George saves the life of his brother who goes on to shoot down a plane before it crashes into a troop transport killing everyone on board. He saves the life of a pharmacist who makes a mistake with medication that would kill a little boy. He gives up his dream of college after his father dies to run the business and gives the money to his brother. All the while, Potter is trying to destroy him to get a hold of everyone's money and control their future.
When he needs help, the whole town comes running to his side, grateful for his kindnesses over the years.
No Mr. Burns. Mitt Romney is not Mr. Potter. Obama is as he steals our children's futures and tries to dictate our way of life. He lies, cheats and steals to get whatever he wants and takes our money to give it to his rich supporters.
Mitt Romney has led a life of quiet service. That is why the country is rallying around him in his and our time of need.
Mr. Burns if you truly love your daughters, you will open your eyes and vote for the true George Bailey, Mitt Romney.

When I read any article, I always read the comments after it. It worries me that so many are dumbed down and could not possibly think for themselves. The anger expressed is not good for this nation. We must change our education system and media sooner rather than later. They would believe anything a so called TV star or fast food chain said. Propagana works.

The liberals keep talking about tax breaks for the rich. What about Obamacare's taxes on the middle class? Here are two examples: next year health care deductions are limited to the excess of 10% of adjusted gross income. This year it is 7.5%. The lower your income, the more likely it is that you will exceed the threshold. This hurts middle class families with big medical (or dental) expenses. And another is the lowering of the limit on contributions to flex spending accounts, from $5,000 to $2,500. This raises taxes by $625 a year for people who previously contributed $5,000 and are in a 25% bracket.

I think Burns is a talented artist and story teller, but like so many others in the entertainment world, he has created in his mind a world that does not exist. Sentimental mush - and more proof that people should stick to what they know best. There is no reason to attach any more significance to Ken Burns' political opinions than to anyone else's. There is, indeed, probably less reason to do so. It is almost always a mistake to try to capitalize on celebrity or success in one area to peddle personal political opinions.
Burns' simplistic, indeed childish good versus evil film-inspired vision of politics is naive and embarrassing. He does not seem to know any more about FDR than the liberal establishment wants him to know. His notions about the supposed virtues of compromise, when it is other people doing the compromising of their beliefs, are laughable. He is free to vote as he pleases - but he has not added to his reputation by this incredibly superficial plug for Obama.

He would be a pariah with whom no important progressive could associate. In other words, he would taste cultural death. Burns does not have enough intellectual or ethical strength to risk such repudiation. He is a weakling, bound and shackled to his progressive culture. Sadly, he is lost!

The recent bombings at the Boston marathon finishing line once again reminded Americans of their vulnerability to terrorist acts. Fresh in the collective public awareness is also the issue of gun violence. Congress is at the same time wrestling with immigration reform. It is very interesting to note that while background checks are considered the major method to control gun violence, with regard to immigration Democrats have very aggressively fought the existing Federal background checks required for persons entering the U.S.

Today the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis released their 2012 personal income estimates. Personal income is an important economic measure of a state’s well-being. (Snip) Since 1950, Maine has increased taxes and spending dramatically with the introduction of the sales tax in 1951 and the income tax in 1969. New Hampshire, on the other hand, did not. Increasing taxes on the private sector has two consequences. First, higher taxes will mean less money in the pockets of individuals and businesses which will reduce their ability to invest for the future.

Many who march in the army of the president say that all they want is to return to the good old days when Bill Clinton rode the range and rich people paid their fair share of taxes. Back then, they say, all was good. In 2000, the top tax rate was 39.6 percent and there was a 2.9 percent Medicare tax on top of that. (Snip) This means that the top stated rate for taxes is now 43.4 percent — a rate that is higher than that paid in Clintonian times.
