| At 10:30 this morning on the World Trade Center grounds, a memorial will be dedicated — a statue commemorating a unique and proud chapter in our nation’s response to 9/11. Eleven years ago today, 36 US Special Forces soldiers landed at night in a blizzard in Afghanistan. They proceeded to rendezvous with Northern Alliance forces under Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum and in 30 short days to overthrow the Taliban. In radio contact with the Pentagon, the Americans were asked what goods they needed. The answer: saddles. For the first time in generations, these US troops were waging war on horseback.
|
Comments: I can say without hesitation that THIS is my favorite memorial to troops I have seen unveiled in the past 30 years. With no respect intended to those who served in Vietnam or Korea (only to the "artists"), this is not a black scar hidden in shame, nor is this bewildered American fighting men on a patrol, this, INCREDIBLY, is an heroic and unapologetic depiction of the American fighter in action.
It is even entitled "De Oppresso Liber"!
Unfortunately, the accompanying photo of the statue is murky, so here's a link to a better shot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:America%27s_Response_Monument-De_Oppresso_Liber.jpg

Thanks to OP for posting this, and the Wikipedia link as well. I read about this statue several months ago. It is indeed a beautiful memorial and tribute to heroes.

Fox had a great picture this morning. And talked to Special Ops backers. Old age has betrayed me but main sponsor made me sit up...private backers.

The statue is beautiful. I heard on FOX this morning that some of these guys had never been of a horse before. Talk about on the job training! In that rough terrain and extreme weather these guys proved to be the heros they are.
The horses in that neck of the woods are small scrappy animals. Pony size. They are use to the conditions, however they were carrying way more weight than normal. God bless these little animals. As a horsewoman, I would describe these little guys as heaving "heart". They will literally go till they drop dead. The combination of our special services and these horses were destined for greatness. I am glad they have been honored in this way.

The sheriffs thought they were being summoned to the Capitol to discuss ideas for changes to New York´s gun control law, the SAFE Act. Instead, Gov. Andrew Cuomo told them to keep quiet. Opposition to the new law has simmered in upstate areas since Cuomo signed the law in January. Many county sheriffs oppose it, particularly its expanded definition of banned assault weapons, and have spoken out around the state. In January, the New York State Sheriffs´ Association wrote Cuomo with an analysis, and later suggested tweaks.

AMHERST, N.Y. - An Amherst man who had his guns taken away by the state is speaking out after the state admitted it made a mistake by suspending his pistol permit. David Lewis is the man State Police deemed so mentally ill he was unfit to own a gun. They recommended to a state judge that the 34-year-old librarian´s pistol permit be suspended and the judge signed the order. (*SNIP*) Tresmond also claims State Police have lined up a special unit to circumvent federal HIPAA laws to pry into gun owners´ medical records, which State Police deny.

AMHERST, N.Y. - State Police forced an Amherst man to turn in his guns after suspending his pistol permit over anti-anxiety medication. But now they say it was all a misunderstanding. Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs said, "Today, we all look like fools." "David," a 34-year-old college librarian, recently had his pistol permit taken away. Erie County´s Licensing Officer, Supreme Court Justice William Boller, was following a recommendation from State Police that David´s permit be revoked because he used anti-anxiety medication in the past.

ROCHESTER — Starting April 15, New York will have the smallest gun magazine limit in the country, and all signs indicate no gun makers have plans to accommodate it. Gun manufacturers have never had a reason to make a magazine with fewer than 10 rounds, because no state required it until now. And, as far as local gun dealers and the Democrat and Chronicle have been able to determine, there are no manufacturers planning to make seven-round magazines. This means that in less than two months, gun dealers such as Paul Martin, owner of Pro-Gun Services in Victor…

CHICAGO — A federal appeals court won´t reconsider an earlier ruling that Illinois´ concealed carry ban is unconstitutional. A three-judge panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down Illinois´ ban in December and gave lawmakers until June 8 to legalize the concealed carry of firearms. Attorney General Lisa Madigan asked for all 10 judges to review the decision, saying it conflicted with decisions by other federal appellate courts and goes beyond what the U.S. Supreme Court has held. Illinois is the only state in the nation that still has a ban in place.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
