In the thick of it: Prince
Harry the helicopter ace

of British soldiers in Afghanistan

Daily Mail [UK], by Ian Drury

Prince Harry is operating like a ‘World War Two Spitfire pilot’ after being scrambled to save the lives of British soldiers in Afghanistan. The Royal has had ‘multiple engagements’ with the Taliban as he flies his fearsome Apache attack helicopter on emergency rescue missions on the battlefield. The 28-year-old, who is known as Captain Wales in the Army, provides covering fire to lightly-armed Chinook helicopters as they land to evacuate wounded troops.[Snip] A military source said: ‘Think World War Two Spitfire pilot and the Battle of Britain. 'He can be sat in a deckchair for hours then scrambled immediately.

They should wait until Harry returns to the UK before telling everyone, including the enemy, what Harry is doing in Afghanistan.

What a wonderful young man. What an example he has set. I wish this had not been publicized. God bless and keep him and all of the men and women serving in war zones, safe!

Nice article, and no doubt Harry is doing a really impressive job.

However, the knucklhead writer should know that "ace" has a very specific technical meaning for pilots, and I am pretty certain that Harry has not shot down 5 enemy aircraft in combat.

I love Harry and Will. They turned into fine young men - well other than the no clothes stuff, Harry. I know how silly it sounds but I still think of their mother and how proud she would be. I have 2 boys - maybe that's the connection I feel.

I agree, tho, too much info on this young man in a dangerous place. Wait til he gets back home safe.

Ian Drury? From the old 70's punk band? Anyway, why don't you tell everybody his helicopter number and flight schedule?

Born into wealth and unimaginable privilege, Charles and Diana's boys have chosen lives of meaning and purpose - which makes the Mail's daily update of the Kardashians and their pretentious ilk look even more kreepy.

Harry is at Camp Bastion, a large military base where many Afghans are employed as civilian, military and police workers. This is the base attacked by the Taliban around September 11.

Harry's whereabouts would have been known the moment he set foot on Afghan soil. There is no point in hiding the information.

Harry wanted to be with his buddies, simple as that. His superiors, and the Queen, decided that because nobody has yet been lost in an Apache, it was safe for Harry to go. I am under the impression that Harry deliberately chose Apache training and qualification for just that reason. I'm not sure but I think his assignment lasts six months. Could be wrong.

Harry was awarded high honors for his flying skills during training. He may not be an ace in the traditional meaning of the appellation but he's damn good!

I am very skeptical. I think this more press office fantasy to burnish the prince's image (after the nude photo "scandal") and build support for an unpopular war in the UK.

No way the military is going to let the queen's grandson get captured, maimed or killed. . .

As much as a useless playboy Harry is in civilian life, I totally respect his desire to serve in the military.

However, it is insane to have him over in the thick of combat. He is ultimately costing the lives of countless members of the British military there, since the muslims are targeting them in hopes of getting lucky and taking him out (or, even better, capturing him) as their biggest prize in this war.

If he is as good of a pilate as they are saying, send him back home and make him a trainer for new pilots. But get him out of there before he cost the lives of many more of him comrades and gives the Taliban exactly what they want...

He seems like a nice guy and all, but I really don't like the comparison to the heroes in the Battle of Britain.

People in two states were taking shelter amid wailing warning sirens Sunday as tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down in Kansas and Oklahoma as part of an extreme weather system plowing through the nation´s midsection. The system, which stretched from North Texas to Minnesota, also heaved hail--dime to softball sized--as well as heavy rainfall. Residents in downtown Wichita, Kan., were told to seek shelter Sunday afternoon after a tornado was confirmed on the ground--with its presence cloaked by thick thunder clouds and heavy rain. Near Oklahoma City, a half-mile wide tornado was reported, prompting a stark alert

In the executive suite on the 11th floor of a former bank building in downtown Columbia, a folk art painting propped up against the wall warns, “Look busy, Jesus is coming.” This is Tony Keck’s office, but he doesn’t need to bother looking busy. [Snip] The core of Keck’s message is that Medicaid, and health insurance generally, isn’t making people healthier. He can’t justify spending more money to expand what he sees as an inefficient program, even if the federal government is offering the state billions of dollars to make that happen.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has delivered some harsh criticisms to President Barack Obama over recent controversies surrounding his administration in a speech. [Snip] CNN says Jindal addressed the IRS’ extra scrutiny of conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status, saying those involved in the targeting should ´go to jail´. ´Anyone who participated in this targeting of Americans for their political beliefs, anyone who knew about it, anyone who simply looked the other way, and anyone under whose watch this occurred needs to be fired,´ Jindal said, noting that ordinary citizens who fail to pay taxes could face jail time.

Obama administration officials were made aware in June 2012 about an investigation into complaints from conservative tea party groups that they were being harassed, and they knew the probe was ongoing at the height of the presidential race, a Treasury inspector general revealed Friday. J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration, testified alongside ousted IRS head Steven Miller, who did little to subdue Republican outrage during hours of intense congressional questioning. Both defiant and apologetic, Miller acknowledged agency mistakes in targeting tea party groups for special scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status, but he insisted that

The insurgent leader, who has not been named for operational reasons, commanded seven groups of Taliban fighters and bombers across southern Afghanistan. The dawn raid, carried out with Afghan forces, took place in the Marjah region near Nad-e-Ali, close to the British base in Lashkar Gah. It is believed the Taliban leader, who sources confirmed had regularly travelled between Helmand and Pakistan, had been hunted for a year after being linked to at least three other attacks. Citing defense ministry sources in Seoul, Yonhap said the missiles had crashed into the Sea of Japan, off the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula. Two rockets were launched this morning while a third was launched in the afternoon, Yonhap said. Early South Korean media reports suggested “shore-based anti-ship” missiles had been fired. Such tests are not unusual in North Korea. In March, a similar launch was carried out with two short-range missiles taking off from the country’s eastern coast. The Tokyo-based news agency, Kyodo, reported the missiles had not fallen into Japanese waters. Yonhap said South Korea had “beefed

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

It began in earnest last Friday. A flash mob of latte drinking, tofu eating media that has done its best to quell, rather than fan the flames of truth, turned on one of their own. Jay Carney lay bludgeoned at the base of the podium, a victim of friendly fire. Ironically, the attack was reminiscent of the one in Benghazi he has repeatedly denied the Administration he represents bears any responsibility for. “Changed twelve times?!” came the cries. And with good reason. We were misled; no, lied to.

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.
