| For sale: a college education for $10,000 or less. Texas Gov. Rick Perry is renewing his call for such lower-cost undergraduate degrees, in what he hopes will be the state's signature response to the national problem of rising college tuition and student debt. "A $10,000 degree provides an opportunity for students to earn a low-cost, high-quality degree that will get them where they want to go in their careers and their lives," the Republican governor said in a statement last week. The governor has repeatedly urged schools to find ways to teach students more efficiently.

Comments: One student laments that the ten thousand wouldn't cover housing, food or textbooks. She may not know that students can double up in cheap off-campus apartments, buy used textbooks and live on Hamburger Helper and Cup-A-Soup.
Off-topic, but, please, President Romney, make Rick Perry your Energy Secretary. He's done well for Texas.

The state-run institution is responsible for tuition and maybe some fees, but I don't see why they should be responsible for living expenses. I like Perry's idea.

The major cause of high college tuition has been the Student Loan Program. The colleges and universities know that students can just increase their loans every time there is a rate increase so they have no incentive to keep their costs in line. Paying "professors" over a $100,000 per year to teach one or two courses a week while graduate students actually teach their classes is ludicrous. Meanwhile, the graduating students are burdened for a significant portion of their lives to pay for such nonsense.

Agree with #2. Tuition increases have outpaced inflation for many years. These colleges and universities see an unlimited pool of money available through GSL's and thereby have little incentive to control their budgets. Just like the federal government.

Governor Perry has been in office long enough to appoint all the members of the governing boards of the universities in Texas. They are beginning to assert some will over the liberal faculties.
Degrees now are awarded mostly for attendance. They should be awarded based on knowledge. To gain knowledge, it is not necessary to attend class in an expensive building designed by an over-paid architect designing a monument to himself.

My degree from the University of Texas was about $4000 for all 4 years.
And that included books, tuition, fees, and season tickets to the football games...

Having a good education resulting in a college degree is a wonderful thing.
Obtaining that degree has become one of the greatest scams ever perpetrated on America's youth... by, you guessed it, liberals.
Definition of a liberal: one who seeks an above average lifestyle without having to produce anything of substance in return for it.
I give you the college professor and professorette.

Thank you Rick Perry, a true pioneer in smart governing. A college degree is by far the biggest rip off in this country. I'm amazed that this bubble hasn't burst already. The same leftoid teachers and professors who vilify capitalism are a part of the this money sucking, profiteering industry.

The bubble is starting to burst. Those holding the bag are the students with $100 or $200k in student loan debt, and the economic value of their degree is $50k a year, not $150k. The facilitator in this has been student loans - which pay for whatever the tuition is, plus living expenses, books, a sememester vacay, etc.
Similar to a previous poster, I attended UT Austin in the 70s and my annual books & tuition ran $1000 a year, plus $2000 in room & board. These days I understand UT would set you back $20-25k a year - a 1 increase in 35 years.
Universities are one of the last places in the US - public primary schools and healthcare are others - where the invisible hand of economics has not yet been allowed to work - yet. Faculty is not efficient, 8 month salaries are out of line, etc. Wouldn't you know it but in these situations - Government is involved, as is politics, other peoples money and the sleeping taxpayors.

Here is advice from a retired professor/dean that will help everyone going to college First, take a serious look at what you want to major in. If you start college and switch majors once, you will extend your college stay by one year with commensurate costs. Two major changes, two extra years. And when you pick that major, try to consider what it will do to prepare you for good employment.
Second, take 18 semester hours instead of 15, each semester, and go to summer school and take a minimum of 12 semester hours. (The Air Force sent me to college in a commissioning program, and we had to take 18 semester hours in the summer. It forces a student to pay attention and stay caught up.)
Third, if you follow my second step, you will graduate in two calendar years plus one additional semester. (and if you were in a program with an internship, that final semester can be in a paid position.)
Fourth, much of college time is squandered in partying. If you feel the need to hit those frat parties and beer blasts, attend one session of alcoholics anonymous.
Fifth, if you earn good grades, and want to go to graduate school, shop around to see who will give you a graduate assistantship or scholarship. That will pay for a master's degree, without borrowing a penny from student loans. (If you are a black or hispanic, you will be offered financial aid for graduate school from just about any place you apply to.)

Great. There's already too many useless BS/BA grads running around looking for jobs as it is.
Pretty soon we'll ended up like Egypt where on one hand you need a PhD to wait table and on the other hand losers with BA in basket weaving cum Ethnic Studies and no experience expects six figures job.

There’s a huge red flag in the Benghazi mess, but conservatives are letting the media get away with using a red herring to avoid it. Give the establishment media credit for obstinacy: Once it settles on a standard narrative or explanation for a particular subject, it shows remarkable discipline in explaining away any evidence that contradicts its own approved spin. So it has been with the media’s 250-day old determination to downplay the scandalous nature of the Obama administration’s treatment of its outpost in Benghazi before, during, and after the terrorist attack there that took four American lives.

Lawmakers across the country are tussling over the Obama administration´s plans to create a small army of assistants to guide millions of Americans as they sign up for new health-insurance options available this fall. Backers of the health-care overhaul face an uphill battle to spread the word about the law, in the face of consumer research that suggests most uninsured people know little about it and are skeptical about the value of health insurance generally. Some Democrats have openly worried that the administration is doing too little to make sure the enrollment process goes smoothly. That is where the "patient navigators"

Labor unions are breaking with President Obama on ObamaCare. Months after the president’s reelection, a variety of unions are publicly balking at how the administration plans to implement the landmark law. They warn that unless there are changes, the results could be catastrophic. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) — a 1.3 million-member labor group that twice endorsed Obama for president — is very worried about how the reform law will affect its members’ healthcare plans. Last month, the president of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers released a statement calling “for repeal

Since Hillary Clinton last came up to Capitol Hill, we’ve learned senior State Department officials sought to scrub references to terrorism from the infamous Benghazi talking points to insulate Foggy Bottom from political criticism — citing concerns of their “building’s leadership” to justify the demands. The rising temperature of the scandal means it’s possible that Hillary could be asked to return and testify again. If she comes back, she had better be prepared, says House Oversight and Government Reform chairman Darrell Issa. “We are interviewing lots of people, most of them under oath,” Issa says, describing the “methodical” approach his committee

We hear a lot, these days, about how President Obama is not like Lyndon Johnson and thanks be to heaven for that small mercy. The point seems to be that the president doesn´t know how to arm twist, sweet talk, bribe, and emasculate both friend and enemy (of which he truly had neither) in order to further his agenda. Since many among the chattering class believe, still, in that agenda, his is generally regarded as an excellent presidency. Never mind that more than half a century after Johnson declared war on poverty ...

Then they came for the maker of a You Tube video, and – okay, we know how this story ends. But how did we get here?Turns out, it’s a fairly swift sojourn from a president pushing to “delegitimize” a news organization, to threatening criminal prosecution for journalistic activity by a Fox News reporter, James Rosen,

More whistleblowers will emerge shortly in the escalating Benghazi scandal, according to two former U.S. diplomats who spoke with PJ Media Monday afternoon. These whistleblowers, colleagues of the former diplomats, are currently securing legal counsel because they work in areas not fully protected by the Whistleblower law. According to the diplomats, what these whistleblowers will say will be at least as explosive as what we have already learned about the scandal, including details about what really transpired in Benghazi that are potentially devastating to both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
