CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he will accept the results of the country's election, whether he wins or loses. Chavez told reporters, "We'll respect the results, whatever they are." Chavez spoke after casting his vote in Caracas. He also said voters are turning out in massive numbers in Sunday's election. The Venezuelan leader is running against opposition leader Henrique Capriles in a vote widely viewed as the toughest electoral challenge of Chavez's nearly 14-year-old presidency. Chavez was greeted at the polling center by American actor Danny Glover

Comments:
Either he's got it all rigged up or Venezuela's generals have told him he's on his own. I vote for the latter - the exit polls are here: http://071012.info/

Danny Glover... last I'll watch any movie of his.

I agree. He's either lying or the fix is in. I thought he had replaced all the important generals with ones loyal to himself. Of course, loyalty in S & C America isn't always permanent and is often for sale too.

Hahahaha! He'll accept the results whether he wins or loses. I'll believe that when I see it.

More like Chavez will accept the results whether he wins or wins....

Dictators get to count the votes. That's why it's called dictatorship and not democracy.

Cruz to introduce voter ID

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday said he would offer an amendment to the Senate immigration bill to counteract a Supreme Court decision striking down state laws requiring voters to prove their citizenship. Cruz´s amendment, which he plans to attach to the bipartisan Gang of Eight bill being debated this week in the Senate, would allow states to require IDs before voters register under the federal "Motor Vehicle" voter registration law. The high court on Monday overturned an Arizona law requiring people to prove their citizenship if they wanted to register through that law.

It is the interview the world´s media organisations have been chasing for more than a week, but instead Edward Snowden is giving Guardian readers the exclusive. The 29-year-old former NSA contractor and source of the Guardian´s NSA files coverage will – with the help of Glenn Greenwald – take your questions today on why he revealed the NSA´s top-secret surveillance of US citizens, the international storm that has ensued, and the uncertain future he now faces. Ask him anything. Snowden, who has fled the US, told the Guardian he "does not expect to see home again",

Venezuela´s President Nicolas Maduro signed a gun control bill into law in a bid to rein in the country´s runaway violent crime. "I hereby sign into law this gun control law, for peace in our nation," Maduro said on Friday in an address in Vargas state. The bill will allow sentences of up to 20 years in prison for any civilian convicted of illegally carrying or selling a firearm. It also restricts the sale of ammunition to civilians, and bans weapons from being shown in public places. "Any arm that is confiscated will be destroyed immediately ...

How Obama Is Sinking
Venezuela´s Opposition
U.S. News & World Report, by Patrick Christy    Original Article

On the margins of a multilateral summit in Guatemala last week, Secretary of State John Kerry met with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jose Jaua, marking the Obama administration´s latest attempt to reset relations with the South American nation. What´s worrisome is that Secretary Kerry´s enthusiasm to find, in his words, a "new way forward" with Venezuela could end up legitimizing Chavez-successor Nicolas Maduro´s quest for power and undermining the country´s democratic opposition and state institutions. Since the death of Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez in March, Maduro´s actions have more resembled those of a Cuban strongman

Yes, There Is A Solution To
Egypt´s Water Crisis With Ethiopia

Water: Egypt is beating the war drums against Ethiopia over its plan to build a giant dam on the Nile, affecting a quarter of Egypt´s water supply. Given both countries´ needs, it´s a tough problem to solve. But it can be done. It´s fairly shocking to think that with all the turmoil going on in the Middle East, a new — and surprisingly dangerous — problem has emerged in the water dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia. But senior Egyptian officials have literally threatened war over Ethiopia´s $4.7 billion Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Egypt believes will significantly cut its water supply

Why Hasn´t IRS Director
Lois Lerner Been Fired?

Amidst the firestorm of scandals swirling around the Obama administration, the IRS’ coordinated targeting of conservative groups has perhaps been the most frightening. The use of the IRS–arguably one of the most apolitical branches of government–as a strategic political weapon is a betrayal of Americans’ trust in the most basic functions of government. Through either gross incompetence or political malfeasance, Lois Lerner, the IRS director of tax exempt groups, allowed her department to target groups that didn’t agree with the Obama administration. Among the litany of questions that remain, one of the most glaring is,

Argentina’s Ex-President Menem
Sentenced to 7 Years of Prison

An Argentine court sentenced former President Carlos Menem to seven years in prison for smuggling weapons to Croatia during the Yugoslav civil war of the 1990s, and to Ecuador. A federal court in Buenos Aires will ask the Senate to lift the 82-year-old Peronist party supporter’s immunity from imprisonment so he can serve out the sentence. Menem pegged Argentina’s currency to the U.S. dollar in 1991, ushering in an almost decade-long boom in foreign investment. Within three years of his departure from office in 1999, Argentina had defaulted on $95 billion in bonds and abandoned the peso peg.

In the latest black eye for the scandal-ridden State Department, a whistleblower claims she was run out of the foreign service after complaining about a consul general’s alleged office trysts with subordinates and hookers.Kerry Howard says she was bullied, harassed and forced to resign after she exposed US Consul General Donald Moore’s alleged security-threatening shenanigans in the Naples, Italy, office. As the post’s community-liaison officer, Howard was charged with keeping workplace peace and advising higher-ups on the state of morale, but when she revealed allegations about her boss, State Department officials swept it under the rug,

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. And Sarah blasted him on Twitter as a bully. Is that, is it, is he a bully? Is he a bad, what is he?

Gang of Eight member Bob Menendez advised Republicans to accept legalization status for current illegal immigrants if they ever want to see another president from their party. “I would tell my Republican colleagues — both in the House and the Senate — that the road to the White House comes through a road with a pathway to legalization,” the New Jersey senator said on State of the Union this morning. “Without it, there’ll never be a road to the White House for the Republican party.” Menendez also warned of triggers on border security

Politico’s Playbook has an excerpt from a new Ryan Lizza piece from the New Yorker that is not yet online. It contains a passage on the back-and-forth between labor and the Chamber that has a quote from a Rubio staffer that is going to raise eyebrows, to say the least: “There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it. There shouldn’t be a presumption that every American worker is a star performer. There are people who just can’t get it, can’t do it, don’t want to do it. And so you can’t obviously discuss that publicly.” Here is the entire context:
