| Entitlements: Lost in all the attention to Mitt Romney's rout in Wednesday's debate was a gross factual error Barack Obama made when he addressed Social Security. No, Mr. President, it is not "structurally sound." At the beginning of the third segment of the debate, moderator Jim Lehrer asked the candidates to address economic issues and, specifically, their differing views on Social Security. Obama responded by saying "Social Security is structurally sound . .. the basic structure is sound." Maybe under some tortured definition the entitlement is sound. The prospect of Social Security motivates couples to not have children since they will not be needed to care for their parents in their old age. Result is a declining population. National suicide.

Well, ... I think the truth is sort of in-between. Social security already has been tweaked, the retirement age is rising a little, because people are living longer - much longer. A small reduction in benefits is coming, and yes, probably a small increase in taxes. A little more means testing, a little incentive for wealthier people to opt-out in favor of tax breaks on other money, and it's "good" for another fifty years.
The problem is near-term, since there was NEVER ANY LOCKBOX (because nobody has any idea how to build such a thing), NOW someone has to come up with the pretend-lockbox funds that were put away. That is a crisis NOW and will be a bigger crisis in ten to twenty years, exactly when me and my boomer buddies start really needing it.
I have really not seen this discussed accurately even in the financial press.

I would not even begin to entertain the thought of raising the SSI age of eligibility unless the same was done in the govn sector. Being able to retire on a govn pension as early as 55 or 50 in some locations is a slap in the face to the private workforce taxpayer who must foot the bill for themselves and the govn workers. When anyone raises the specter of tinkering with the govn pension systems they go apoplectic in their outrage yet doing so to SSI seems somehow `necessary` for the solvency of the program.
If raising the age of retirement is good for the private sector then it must also apply to the govn sector or no dice.

A 51-YEAR-OLD man is due in court today accused of the murder of Colin Greenway in Thamesmead. Mr Greenway, 56, was pronounced dead in his ground floor flat in Abbotts Close at around 2pm on Saturday afternoon (June 15). Police arrested Daha Mohammed, also of Abbotts Close, nearby and yesterday charged him with the murder. He will appear at Bexley Magistrates’ Court this morning.

A MURDER investigation has been launched after a disabled man had his throat slit in a ‘brutal attack’ in his Thamesmead home. The victim, who has been named as 56-year-old Colin Greenway, was pronounced dead in his ground floor flat in Abbotts Close at around 2pm yesterday (June 15). Some neighbours reportedly saw two men going over the gate at the side of his property into the back garden about an hour before Mr Greenway´s body was discovered by the emergency services. Yegor Borisov, head of the Sakha Republic, a vast and sparsely populated region of eastern Siberia, has called for an urgent cull of wolves after the predators swamped populated areas in a search for food. The local government has announced a three month "battle against wolves" to be launched on January 15. Special task forces will be put together and the hunting season extended all year round in a bid to tackle what the local authorities have described as a "mass migration" of the creatures. Ryan Lizza’s New Yorker piece on the Gang of 8´s immigration efforts [behind paywall] contains a seemingly inflammatory quote from an unnamed aide to Marco Rubio: “‘There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it,’ a Rubio aide told me. ‘There shouldn’t be a presumption that every American worker is a star performer. There are people who just can’t get it, can’t do it, don’t want to do it. Marco Rubio´s (R-Fla.) office sparked a bit of a firestorm on Sunday when a quote attributed to one of his aides claimed that immigration reform is necessary because some American workers "just can´t cut it." The aide made the comment to The New Yorker´s Ryan Lizza in an article published early Monday morning, explaining why Rubio sided with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on the issue of a guest-worker program for the construction industry. “There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it,” the Rubio aide told Lizza.

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria.
