Shocker: Free Birth Control
Means Fewer Abortions

Mother Jones, by Erika Eichelberger

That's according to a new study published on Thursday by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis. The project gave free birth control to more than 9,000 local women and girls, many of whom were poor or uninsured, and tracked them for two years. There were 6.3 births per 1,000 teenagers in the study group, compared to the 2010 national rate of 34 per 1,000. As for abortions, there were fewer than eight per 1,000 women in the study, compared with the almost 20 per 1,000 nationally.

Socialists and communists, like the ones at Mother Jones, only use the word "free" as a smokescreen. You'd think they'd be ashamed of this charade by now..

If people waited till marriage to have sex there would be even less abortions...and if people had more respect for their own bodies and themselves there would be less abortions. And if people didnt believe that sex is right, and its just part of dating..there would be less abortions..and then if people believed that life is precious, and a gift from God there would be less abortions..and no need for birth control

And Erika's mother didn't believe in abortion either.

Do we a need a program to pay for billionaire's birth control?

At the other end of the spectrum, the poor teenagers, they still have to take birth control as prescribed. You cannot legislate personal responsibility. Abortion rates will continue to thrive.

Reply 7 - Posted by: BarryNo, 10/6/2012 8:26:17 AM     (No. 8913765)

It's not free. Someone has to pay for it, and I object to someone else fooling around on MY dime. I also object to anyone slaughtering babies on MY dime.

I think we have a problem... And I think these whiners who want 'free' birth control can keep it zipped, or keep their knees together like human beings instead of mink in heat.

Finally, I object to the government, whose existence relies on the Constitution, ignoring that document to do whatever they damn well please. Our founders were willing to fight for the rights they enumerated. I warn you I am willing to do the same.

This election will decide whether I will need to.

WOW! I don't know if I'm sick or disgusted or both.

20 abortions per 1000 women nationally?

If the population is 319 million of which 52% are females and of that 60% are not of active pregnacy age ............6,353 abortions a year in America.

This is insane, sick, and inhuman. When do we accept these children instead of destroy them?

Forgive us, Lord, forgive us.

omg. I'm so sick of this 'free' stuff.

Reply 10 - Posted by: Vivi, 10/6/2012 8:41:05 AM     (No. 8913797)

It is a myth and an insult to suggest that women are too stupid, indiscriminate, and so at the mercy of their biological drives they can't manage their fertility without free stuff.

Of course they're not free.

Do the pills work better if the government uses it's power and makes people violate their religious beliefs by paying for them? That little constitution thingie is so quaint.

And free sterilization, a part of obamacare, would be even better, right? And mandatory sterilization of less desirable Americans would be even better than voluntary sterilization, right?

The study paid for whatever method the young women chose, and 75% of them chose the most effective methods, IUD's and implants. According to another story on the study these methods cost $800.

Moral dilemmas abound on this issue. I agree that it would be best if all waited until marriage to be sexually active but that doesn't take seriously the truth about human nature (total depravity from a Calvinist perspective). Some might wait but most won't.

What are we willing to pay to put an end to the culture of abortion? What is the greater evil? (I am not arguing for Obamacare and its mandates that religious institutions go against their faith commitments by the way.)

I hope that when we start getting our "free" birth control, a government agent can visit my house to make sure I'm using it correctly. That's part of the coverage, right?

Self-control and high moral standards are free. If you can afford a cellular phone, you can afford birth control.

# 13 puts it succinctly - given the choice women will choose one of the expensive, very effective long lasting option for birth control, this will result in fewer pregnancies and fewer abortions

Reply 19 - Posted by: Feebie, 10/6/2012 10:06:25 AM     (No. 8913972)

Wonder which Pharma companies have Erika on their payroll?

Bottom line: responsible individuals will comings to be responsible and irresponsible people will continue to do so. Making something free to an irresponsible non resourceful group (not all, but assuming their are people that WILL find a way to get this paid for or not engage in the activity and most - will continue not to) will not decrease anything. Maybe if they paid for it they'd be more inclined to not "skip" a few days on accident.

And if abortions don't go down (like this was even the reason to begin with) what then? Hook people up to shock collars to FORCE them to take those free pills?

These people have weird ideas about human nature - weird ideas that never seem to translate to reality.

It's a mental illness for sure.

Reply 21 - Posted by: dtrumpet2, 10/6/2012 10:18:20 AM     (No. 8913996)

It would seem to me that if women actually took responsibility for their bodies then there would be far fewer abortions. Responsibility is a wonderful thing. Responsibility does not limit the amount of sex one can enjoy. Responsibility gives one peace of mind. Responsibility does not require government help and helps to maintain one's independence.
It is just amazing how taking responsibility for one's actions keeps one from getting into trouble and having to do things one does not want to do.

for quite some time, several years at least, birth control has been available at no cost to a large group of women. Did any one check the abortion rate in that group?

I'm not into this bully tactic, pay for my birth control or pay for my abortion. Agree with other posters - where is your responsibility in this?

Reply 25 - Posted by: curious1, 10/6/2012 11:10:39 AM     (No. 8914095)

No free BC.
No free abortions.
No welfare checks for kids.
No welfare checks for adults.
...and so forth...

Get the idea?

Cut off the money spigot and you'll see these behaviors self-correct over time. We've tried the 'free stuff' for half-a-century. It didn't work and the law of unintended consequences struck very hard. Now it's time to return to sanity.

Shocker: "Free" birth control means taxpayers pay for it whether they want to or not

Reply 28 - Posted by: killerbee, 10/6/2012 12:21:53 PM     (No. 8914254)

Shocker: making illegal abortions means more use of birth control, hence fewer unwanted pregnancies. Birth control, being inexpensive in the first place, is readily available to anyone who wants to take responsibility for their choices before they make them.

Shocker: Mother Jones doesn't know the definition of the word free.

Reply 30 - Posted by: msjena, 10/6/2012 1:44:25 PM     (No. 8914422)

If birth control prevents abortion, then why did the demand for legal abortion not start until birth control became so readily available and effective?

Reply 31 - Posted by: mollybob, 10/6/2012 2:09:28 PM     (No. 8914459)

Mother Jones may have used the word "fewer" correctly, but it's the only thing they have right. As others have observed, there is no such thing as "free birth control" and to suggest a causal relationship between a fictional freebie and the non-proliferation of abortions is a fallacy. But given the source, who's surprised at that?

Reply 32 - Posted by: noparallel, 10/6/2012 4:50:23 PM     (No. 8914675)

"Free birth control" = more STD's! Nine months v. potential lifetime disease or death. You choose.

Trenton — Gov. Chris Christie today signed an executive order to postpone Halloween until Monday because of unsafe conditions throughout New Jersey in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. “In too many communities in our state, the damage and losses from this storm are still being sorted out, and dangerous conditions abound even as our emergency management and response officials continue their work," Christie said in a statement. The governor has said for a few days he would probably issue the order, even joking that he might reschedule it for Election Day.

Mitt Romney likes to say he won't "apologize" for his success in business. But what he never says is "thank you" – to the American people – for the federal bailout of Bain & Company that made so much of his outsize wealth possible. According to the candidate's mythology, Romney took leave of his duties at the private equity firm Bain Capital in 1990 and rode in on a white horse to lead a swift restructuring of Bain & Company, preventing the collapse of the consulting firm where his career began. When The Boston Globe reported on the rescue at the time of his Senate run against Ted Kennedy,

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

This is the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of How Democracies Perish, an analysis of the spread of world communism by Jean-François Revel, one of freedom´s most serious French defenders since Tocqueville. At the heart of this work, Revel details "The Tools of Communist Expansion," among which the most relevant for understanding our current situation comes in Chapter 16, "Ideological Warfare and Disinformation." The profound simplicity of Revel´s nuts and bolts account of totalitarianism´s Cold War advance, far from being obsolete

Celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted in a recorded deposition to telling racist jokes, using the N-word, and planning a slavery-themed wedding, according to multiple reports. The May 17 deposition where she made the alleged admissions is part of a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by Lisa Jackson, the former manager of a Savannah, Georgia, restaurant run by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers. Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her. According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,”
