It is a myth and an insult to suggest that women are too stupid, indiscriminate, and so at the mercy of their biological drives they can't manage their fertility without free stuff.

The study paid for whatever method the young women chose, and 75% of them chose the most effective methods, IUD's and implants. According to another story on the study these methods cost $800.

Moral dilemmas abound on this issue. I agree that it would be best if all waited until marriage to be sexually active but that doesn't take seriously the truth about human nature (total depravity from a Calvinist perspective). Some might wait but most won't.

What are we willing to pay to put an end to the culture of abortion? What is the greater evil? (I am not arguing for Obamacare and its mandates that religious institutions go against their faith commitments by the way.)

Bottom line: responsible individuals will comings to be responsible and irresponsible people will continue to do so. Making something free to an irresponsible non resourceful group (not all, but assuming their are people that WILL find a way to get this paid for or not engage in the activity and most - will continue not to) will not decrease anything. Maybe if they paid for it they'd be more inclined to not "skip" a few days on accident.

And if abortions don't go down (like this was even the reason to begin with) what then? Hook people up to shock collars to FORCE them to take those free pills?

It would seem to me that if women actually took responsibility for their bodies then there would be far fewer abortions. Responsibility is a wonderful thing. Responsibility does not limit the amount of sex one can enjoy. Responsibility gives one peace of mind. Responsibility does not require government help and helps to maintain one's independence.
It is just amazing how taking responsibility for one's actions keeps one from getting into trouble and having to do things one does not want to do.

for quite some time, several years at least, birth control has been available at no cost to a large group of women. Did any one check the abortion rate in that group?

If birth control prevents abortion, then why did the demand for legal abortion not start until birth control became so readily available and effective?

Mother Jones may have used the word "fewer" correctly, but it's the only thing they have right. As others have observed, there is no such thing as "free birth control" and to suggest a causal relationship between a fictional freebie and the non-proliferation of abortions is a fallacy. But given the source, who's surprised at that?

"Free birth control" = more STD's! Nine months v. potential lifetime disease or death. You choose.
