A Yale University study has shown that a great many misinformed Americans are unlikely to change their minds, even when presented with facts contrary to their understanding. And when misinformation supports people’s pre-existing political views, it is almost impossible to change their minds with the pertinent facts. According to the study conducted by political scientist John Bullock, the harder one tries to rebut the misinformation, the more recalcitrant Americans, and particularly conservatives, are to changing their position.
Comments: Fact-challenged Clueless Clive is at it again. A politician, Deval Patrick, is not an authoritative, unbiased source of "facts". The $5-trillion-deficit Romney tax cut lie pushed by the Democrats has been disproved by nonpolitical analysts and was today disowned by the DNC. Looks like Clive exactly fits the profile of the dumbos in that Yale University study he mentions.
Who is this Clive person? First, I think Obama did make his $5t claim and argument as Clive tells it, during the debate.
It's a very weak argument and about all you can do when denouncing the putative $5t is to jump up and down. If Obama has any competent debate coaches, they will tell him not to do that, it's a no-win strategy.
Second, if you have one Mitt Romney in your head, and you meet another on the stage, let me tell you which one is the real one.
Wow, another load of horse manure from McFarlane. This idiot liberal is totally in the tank for Obambi. It's amazing to read the left wing rags. According to most liberal pundits, Romney was on the ropes, and his campaign was hopeless, and the race was all but over but for counting the landslide for Obambi. This is what happens when you drink your own bathwater--when you become part of the Obambi narrative. This race has been close, but Romney has had a lead for weeks. When you believe skewed to the Democrat polls, you will have a hard time when your prince is exposed for the fraud he has always been. Did you see Obambi today. He had his teleprompter back and he was all fired up reading more garbage from Axelrod. It's over Obambi. You have been exposed for the fraud that you are, and a pretty dumb one to boot.
1. Altitude sickness 2. Distracted by important national security issues 3. Bad moderator 4. Romney used handkerchief to cheat 5. Obama is too professorial for common minds 6. Romney lied so much Obama couldn't keep up 7. Bad debate preparation by John Kerry 8. Too much of a gentleman, wanted "conversation," not gutter politics 9. Doesn't matter who won because debates never change people's minds anyway 10. Deliberate strategy(rope-a-dope)
Clive, I lived in MA for almost 60 years...and I've been to Wooosta (too) many times. It's like a miniature Detroit...all dingy, boarded up buildings, long gone industry, bums and dirtballs, gangs, illegals. Clive, it's got it all!!! At least everything that liberal havens everywhere seem to have! Keep talking, Clive...just watch your back, you're chance of getting mugged in Wooosta is a lot better than getting hit by lightning. A LOT better.
Mr. McFarlane correctly identified a strange logic phenomenon, yet incorrectly identified the opposite group practicing the error as the chief malefactors. There is a name for Mr. McFarlane and it is a "Mumpsimus." Even Stephanie Cutter has admitted the $5T figure is made-up idiocy believed only by idiots. McFarlane obviously and publicly places himself prominently in that group.
I cannot remember exactly when Nelson Mandela entered my consciousness, but I remember the giddiness I felt when they were forced to turn him loose after 27 years of captivity. I remember, after his release, how the stories and the songs that before had passively comforted me exploded with a kinetic energy that shattered the skepticism I had about my place in the world. To me, he was David slaying Goliath with a sling and stone. He was Bob Marley´s "Duppy Conqueror." "… the bars could not hold me... force could not control me..." Today, however, I am afraid that we tend to view the lives of individuals like Mandela,
Our bankrupt politics is on strident display in the manufactured crisis engulfing Obamacare. In every newspaper and on every news channel, Republicans can be found salivating over the success of their sabotage campaign, while fair-weather Democrats, fearful of upcoming elections, are backsliding on their commitment to adequate and affordable health care. And what exactly is feeding the frenzy on both sides? We are being told that it is the botched rollout of a government website where individuals can shop and sign up for health insurance. We are being told also that it is President Obama´s broken promise, the one he
President Barack Obama is doubling down on his Obamacare lies. He is now trying to erase retroactively his point-blank assurance to the American people that “if you like your health-care plan, you will be able to keep your health-care plan, period.” Drawing on his golfing experience, he is insisting on a mulligan as millions of Americans are losing the health insurance policies they have chosen because of Obamacare mandates. “What we said was you could keep it if it hasn’t changed since the law was passed,” he told Obamacare’s political beneficiaries and contractors this past Monday during a speech they
Big Brother is not only watching you. He is eavesdropping on you, stealing your metadata, snooping in your email and telling you what to eat and which illnesses you can treat if you’re lucky enough to see a doctor once Obamacare is implemented. In Obama’s 1984, Mark Tapson shows that if he were here today George Orwell would see a disturbing resemblance between the U.S. and the dystopian future he wrote about so prophetically a generation ago. Obama’s 1984 takes the reader into the dark heart of this administration, a place of omnipresent NSA surveillance, police state tactics by the
I grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, and my elementary and high-school education was infused with the history that was all around us, so I was very curious to know just how the shutdown of the nation´s parks had affected my most favorite part of Minute Man National Park -- the Old North Bridge. Had the Park Service wrapped the iconic Minute Man sculpture by Daniel Chester French in burlap, so the tourists couldn´t see it? I took a few minutes on a perfectly gorgeous Columbus Day to find out. (snip for picture) As I expected, the parking lots had been
Last night (October 9), my wife brought home a pamphlet from our local CVS pharmacy, titled "Affordable Care Act Answers." I didn´t expect to find anything in this simple booklet that I didn´t already know, but it did refer me to their website on the topic, CVS.com/insurance, which my wife asked me to check out. On the website is this Q&A entry: Do I need to have insurance? Yes. The ACA requires all Americans have health care coverage "that meets basic minimum standards." I said to my wife, "That´s flat-out false," and I sent a brief, indignant note to CVS
There have been trying times when men of foresight, faith and conviction have helped us to transcend the frailty of our human condition and to soar mightily as if we were gods. This moment in time would seem tailor-made for the appearance of such a person. The civil war in Syria, in which that country´s brutal leader, Bashar al-Assad, is beset by opponents who are just as brutal, cries out for someone to show us with clarity, charity and certainty what should be done for the good of country and the world.
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
The health director who approved the release of President Obama’s birth certificate has died in a plane crash, Hawaiian officials said Thursday. Loretta Fuddy died after the Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft she was travelling on went down shortly after leaving Kalaupapa Airport at around 3:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) on Wednesday. The other eight people on board were rescued, Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air, told NBC News early Thursday, adding that that there was no indication as to why the plane had crashed. Fuddy hit the headlines two years ago when she approved a waiver request allowing Obama to
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
Fox News host Megyn Kelly has made herself the center of a racial controversy by declaring that Jesus Christ and Santa Claus are white. On Wednesday night, Kelly was responding to an article by Slate writer Aisha Harris, who wrote an article entitled “ Santa Claus Should Not Be a White Man Anymore .” The popular news host told viewers of “The Kelly File,” her hit FNC program, “When I saw this headline, I kinda laughed and I said, ‘Oh, this is ridiculous. Yet another person claiming it´s racist to have a white Santa.’ And by the way, for all you kids
Views of the tea party are at all-time lows in a new poll, as primary challenges to establishment Republicans continue to heat up Washington. Just 30 percent of Americans view the tea party favorably in a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, the movement’s lowest point since Gallup began polling about it during its rise in 2010. Also in a first, a majority of Americans had an unfavorable view of the tea party, at 51 percent. Similar numbers of respondents described themselves as proponents or opponents of the tea party: Twenty-two percent identified themselves as tea party supporters, while 24 percent said they
